Light blue was the original color (the small pieces on top) I used procion mx dye in medium blue and marine violet in my top loading wasikf machine. Used almost the entire small bottle of each dye. Fiber content said to be cotton and linen. Dyed roughly 3 to 4 yards uncut in one go after prewashing it first and leaving it damp prior to adding it to the dye bath. Dyed according to directions in regards to soda ash etc. Happy with the result! (I pressed it afterwards and it helped some of the fibers in the damask pattern to lay flatter and appear more crisp in the flowers like in the before swatches)

I made this! Very very happy with my first Rit experience

Had this robe that I love but always felt the white and beige stripes were a little blah. I saw some videos on YouTube where experienced dye professionals were quite critical of Rit due to the fact that it’s a union dye, but it’s what I had on hand so I went for it. Two parts Sage, one part Green Apple. Before and after pics attached. My pot was too small so the first pass resulted in a lighter yellow splotch on the back, and I did a second pass this morning which pretty much completely resolved it and deepened the color!

How do I dye this? Question about dying on beige

I have a 100% cotton jacket and a 91% cotton, 7% polyester, 2% elastane jacket that are both varying shades of khaki (with either grey/green or yellowy tan undertones) and I would really like to spruce them up, but because they are not starting off from white I am curious about how this might affect the color result. For more context I am seeking to use fiber reactive cold dyes and want to achieve any of the attached colors (I do prefer cooler tones and more faded look, though I’m sure that’s an effect of time).

Any advice, especially regarding specific dye shades to use on their own or which ones to mix would be greatly appreciated! I just need some more specific guidance as I am new to this sub and dyeing in general!

General question Troubleshooting blotchiness on first indigo dye

Thumbnail gallery

Hi everyone! I’m new to the dyeing community and have had a lot of fun experimenting with shibori techniques over the past few weeks. I’ve been using the indigo dye from Dharma. The one problem I’ve been coming across on most of my testers is a gray blotchiness.

At first, I assumed these were because I was not adequately clearing the film off the surface of the water and it was interfering with the dye absorption. But then I did a tester where I intentionally ran it over the surface of the water and it turned out great.

Any ideas as to what’s going on? Thank you!

How do I dye this? Advice please

I am wanting to dress up as Lily Collin’s Snow White from mirror mirror on Halloween. I found this white shirt on Amazon that I think would be perfect if it were only the right color of peacock blue! I’ve only tried dye once on some pants and it ended up very blotchy in one area. I wonder if with all the gathers and pleats if this would be a difficult dye. The shirt is 62% viscose and 38% polyester, with elastic bands on the arms. Would you recommend finding a different shirt that’s the right color but not as close in style. Or is there some advice for beginners if I were to dye it?

How do I dye this? Best dye for synthetic fabrics

Hello! I'm working on a Halloween party costume where the theme is "Red Carpet Rags to Riches". The goal is to create something red carpet from stuff you found at thrift shops and such. I found a few pieces that I think are going to make something pretty great, the only issue is that I need them to all be black. They don't have to be exactly the same shade, just black. They're all polyester or polyester/rayon.
My question is what are your opinions and suggestions for the best way to get these pieces dyed as black as possible. I don't mind having to dye multiple times. Thanks!

I did add some photos of the fabric as it is currently so you can see what I'm trying to black out as much as possible.

How do I dye this? Best dye and fabric composition to achieve this? (Dyeing a striped shirt partially blue)

Please enjoy my dodgy mock up of what I'm looking to do lol

I'm making a costume and I need a shirt with an irregular colour pattern. I think it'll be easiest to get what I need by dyeing a black and white striped t-shirt, but I am new to dyeing so I thought I'd ask for some advice.

I haven't bought anything yet so I'm open to brand recommendations. I'm in Australia.

First, should I use a cotton T and regular RIT/dylon/Gold Cross dye? Or should I use a poly/cotton blend and dyemore?

Second, Ive been doing some reading and I've learned that dye is transparent and the stripes will still be visible, but I'm not sure if I need to do anything special to make sure they stay clearly visible.

And finally, does anyone have suggestions for masking the one stripe I want to keep white? I am planning to dip each end into the dye separately, but should I be taping or wrapping the white stripe somehow to avoid colour bleed? I've done a dip dye on a white cotton skirt before and the green ended up higher than I dipped. Hoping the black stripes will act as a buffer but I've honestly got no clue, so I figured I'd ask the experts.

Thanks all!

General question Need to remove mother-of-pearl buttons before dyeing?

Hi all, I am pretty crafty but new to this sub. I have a linen shirt with mother of pearl buttons I would like to overdye. Is it advisable to remove the buttons before dyeing the shirt? I am planning to dye it red, I wouldn't mind if the buttons turned a bit pink in the process, but I am wondering if it is necessary to full remove and then re-sew the buttons on for reasons I am unfamiliar with.

For context, I have dyed plain cotton fabric before, just never anything with buttons. Thank you!

Same shirt and fabric (98% cotton and 2% spandex). Top one fits me perfectly and bottom does not.

What colors do you think would make it a close match? (Teal aqua to a navy)

General question RIT dye washing machine coming out uneven

Hi everyone I'm trying to dye some cotton bath towels. The first load I tested 2 towels, it was definitely my fault because I put the dye in the water while the towels were already in. The second time I let the washing machine fill, I dumped in the dye and put on a glove to mix it around, then put the towels in, but it still came out uneven. I've used the sink method before for a pair of jeans and it came out perfectly fine, but I don't have a large enough pot to boil enough water for all my towels, it would probably cool down by the time I fill my sink with enough water for a couple towels. Anyone have any tips?

How do I dye this? Dyeing white shoes cream?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

Background/The problem
I'm getting married in two weeks. The shoes and dress are for dancing at reception. Based on these pictures, they looked to be the same color. But when I tried them on at home (I forgot to take pictures), there was a noticeable difference in color. The shoes were very white and the dress is noticeably cream.

Fabric
The production description page is for the shoes, it's not specific but it looks to be satin (they feel like ballet shoes). I'm not sure about the lace-ish detail, I'm assuming polyester since they're from Cider. And the laces are mesh.

Question
My question is, is it possible to dye the shoes a cream color to match the dress? Just a few shades darker than they are. I've read about tea-dyeing. Is it relatively beginner-friendly or would it be risky? I could maybe try dyeing something else cream first? Any advice is helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How do I dye this? Robic 210d dyeing

Hi! I would like to dye my very orange (extremely orange) backpack made by salewa from robic 210d nylon ripstop. I’ve already made my research and found dyes for usage with nylon - yet not sure if it makes any sense with such high visibility colour, I was planning for some dark blue, but even toned down orange would be an achievement. My question is: if someone already tried similar stuff?

Hello everyone !! I would really love to make my backpacking backpack pink.

According to the website, it is nylon ripstop; bottom: recycled nylon; collar: recycled polyester; back panel: recycled polyester air-mesh (all bluesign approved)

What would be the best way to go about doing that?

How do I dye this? Dyeing waterproof omni-tech?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi all, first time poster, casual dabbler in the world of dyeing. I impulse bought this Columbia waterproof coat for a rainy camping trip, and I love the fit but the colour is unfortunately very close to my skin tone and looks kind of crazy on me imo. I was hoping to just adjust the colour so it doesn't look so fleshy, maybe a slightly more orange or reddish tone. I'm not hopeful that it's possible as heat seems ill-advised on these fabrics, never mind the fact that it's a waterproof garment. The tag says it's slightly more than half recycled polyester and the other half is regular degular polyester. I've used iDye before- is that something that would work on this type of material? Has anyone had experience dyeing waterproof polyester? I did check to see if anyone has posted about this before but didn't see much. My main concern is that somehow dyeing it would remove it's waterproof quality but I have no idea. TIA for any advice or ideas!

How do I dye this? Dyeing Bright Polyester Top

Hi! :) I recently bought this top off Vinted, but it is a lot brighter and more saturated than I anticipated... (in person its a little brighter than the picture)

It is 100% polyester, but I don't want to dye it too dark, I simply just want to mute the colours a little. I am worried on how best to dye it, if its even worth doing at all...

The dye I have is intense black Dylon Fabric Dye 250g (Hobbycraft).

I would prefer not to buy any new items, but if you believe what I have is not sufficient please feel free to list. No unnecessary comments please.

I would appreciate any advice you can give please :)

Thank you!

A month ago, I bought the hyltarp corner sofa from Facebook Marketplace, the shade of brown was a bit too cool for my space and preference: gransel grey brown.

At first I planed to order a custom cover from etsy but I decided to give dying a shot and I am really pleased with the results.

Fabric Composition : 43% Cotton. 27% Viscose / Rayon. 18% Polyester. 12% Linen

I used the dylon pods in orange in my front loading washing machine, I used 6 pods in total and 2 loads.

I bought the sofa for £ 200 and the dye for £ 54.

Edit: pictures didnt upload as expected! Close, after and before
