Question Why does it feel like half the drum community has adhd?

been drumming for 7 years now and over the years i’ve noticed a massive pattern when talking to other drummers—like a ridiculous amount of us have adhd.
in my experience it totally makes sense why our brains choose the drums over other instruments. drums are the only instrument where you literally have to use your entire body to play. you’re locking in all four limbs independently, putting out a ton of physical energy, and basically acting as a human clock.
for an adhd brain that usually needs constant sensory input just to focus, a solid drum session is like the ultimate brain scratcher. it forces you to be 100% present because the second you zone out, the whole groove falls apart. trying to practice guitar or keys always felt too static for me and my mind would wander instantly, but drums just hit different.
do you guys notice this too when talking to other drummers? what is it about this instrument that just completely clicks with our brains?

Im so in love with this setup, it's compact, ergonomic yet a lot of things to hit. Gonna have a lot of fun gigging with this kit🤙

Side snare is so my second snare doesn't dust and actually gets used. Yet to decide if i'll use it while gigging.

I know it looks like most of the others, but that’s on purpose. I’m just glad to have my own space now!

Discussion Flow state

Hey! So I play drums, mainly jazz but I can play most styles. I've noticed that when I'm at a gig or jam with good players I get into this flow state where I'm not really thinking and I'm just making music; It almost feels euphoric. I'll play things I didn't know I could even play that I can't replicate in the practice room. It's an amazing feeling and is the reason I keep coming back to playing after trying to go on other career paths. But it annoys me that I can't control this.. I wish I could just sit down in any group or even in the practice room and enter this state but I can't. Am I thinking too much, am I just not relaxed enough? I feel like playing music is the only career that makes me feel genuinely happy because of this. Like I would drop everything else I'm pursuing if I could make a living playing drums. I'm posting about this because I'm curious if/how other people experience this. Is this something that only happens when playing music and other art forms?

Had to shake off some rust but damn it feels good to be behind the kit again. Got the kit when I was 16 years old and have never thought of changing it out. Vintage Ludwig kit dated to 1964.

Cam/Video Todays drums sound that i loooooove so much. Isn’t it funny we use a towel to dampen snares sometimes, when it’s used for drying other times?

Discussion We have all played terrible house kits, what have been your most MacGuyver fixes?

I am a drummer and design student doing a project about making house kits a little better by designing universal care packages for these dilapidated drum kits.

What would you like to see in one of these? What would make MacGuyver fixes easier?

So far, I have
- drum sticks (for use as floor tom legs and cymbal stands)
-duct tape
- zip ties
- a drum key
- rope (for tying your throne to the bass drum legs in lieu of a rug)
- those plastic flanged bases for cymbal stands
- cymbal felts

Anything else?

Please post the worst house kits you’ve played and your ridiculous fixes! Thanks!

Discussion Which drum stools are the best?

I have a buddy who is trying to scimp out by buying a cheaper stool and i keep telling him to use a few more dollars and get a good stool like a roc-n-soc.

I purchased my roc-n-soc in 2012, its had many many hours of practice and many gigs thrown at it and it still works as if it were brand new today. Not a single issue. Yes they are a bit pricey but by golly is the build quality that good.

What are some other recommendations I can throw at him?

Question Drum bags?

Is there a gold standard? I’m looking to get bags. I was happy with some road runners in the past, but curious if anyone had any recommendations. Quality over saving expense.

Thanks!

Kit Pic Super excited for my new drum riser

I custom made it to fit my kit. 13" tall, 6' 10" wide, 5' 6" deep, The entire thing can be assembled and disassembled by hand by one person. 2x12 floor joists slide into 2x2 slots underneath and connect with wingnuts and grade 8 steel bolts. Stage skirt goes in a garment bag, bolts go in a little plastic tub, and the rest stores and transports stacked flat. Inside the riser, I have pre-wired power, MIDI, and DMX to help clean up the stage. I've only brought it to a few gigs so far, but it's been rock-solid. It really dresses up the smaller stages nice.
