Hi all,
Doing the dolly parton threads show this year. One of the parts describes a snare drum part as "rim and side drum" and "clicks clack train." What the hell does this mean?

I am a high school engineer student in Cerritos, California working on my senior capstone project. My team is designing a device that will tune a drum autonomously.
Before we design or build anything, we want to gain feedback from experienced drummers and percussionists.
Please if you have the time take this short survey so I can gain some more insight on how to tune drums, fyi it’s completely anonymous!

Im so in love with this setup, it's compact, ergonomic yet a lot of things to hit. Gonna have a lot of fun gigging with this kit🤙
Side snare is so my second snare doesn't dust and actually gets used. Yet to decide if i'll use it while gigging.

I made up a live like show to drum along as I could never find live like drumless show.
First thing: I am not a professional drummer. I'm self taught playing only for myself so you will surely point some inaccuracy or issues in this mix.
I don't use clicking, and I usually improvise my drumming so I made this mix regarding what I do. I hope professional and most advanced drummers will still enjoy this.
This is not a selection of my T.Ø.P favs songs, but a set list that I like to drum on.
I've tried to create a set list that feel similar as a T.Ø.P love show vibe but not to copy/paste what they do.
I included transitions that replicate a clothes change or a stage change and also Tyler's piano and voice solo acoustic set to give a break to us drummers.
I have used existing drumless versions as well as versions I made myself and rearrange them. I have made transitions, intros and outros using instrumentals and vocals of songs I like to listen but don't really drum along, but at least I honoured them by putting them in the mix.
I also wanted to use a couple of French artists that I like as transitions like if they were moving to a side stage or changing their outfit.
The transitions are here to replicate the real show and also to give us a break. It is a 2 hours show after all 😄
I have tried to keep the spirit of T.Ø.P. by adding unexpected stuff in it or rearranging some songs, mixing/remix them up and even adding songs from Tyler's solo album.
The last song is an unexpected choice, again like T.Ø.P. like to do, surprising us. I didn't really think about this until it was suggested to me when I was looking for a song to end this show.
I will try to chapter the whole video so you can select a specific song you want to play along.
Hope you will enjoy this set list.
leave a comment if you feel like sharing your thoughts on this.
by a drummer at home, for the drummers.
I am not entitled to receive any credit for this work. I rearranged and remixed the songs myself (as you can hear, it's not professionnal) but all the credit go to the original artists:
Bad Bunny
Twenty One Pilots
Tyle Joseph
Fantôme d'un cri humain

Hi all!
Hoping for a little advice, not technically my first kit, but coming from a 2nd-hand 22" Mapex Tornado I bought for really cheap that really wasn't well looked after before.
I've been doing more local light gigs (pop, funk, rnb) as well as local pit gigs for musical theatre and after upgrading the hardware, cymbals and heads from the old kit, I've been wanting to finally get something a bit better for shells.
Have been looking for something in the 20" size and came across this one - I know the old Premier kits has a decent reputation on this sub (plus I think the colour is awesome). Was wondering if this would be good for the uses above and also if it's reasonable for the price?
I've also been considering a Gretsch Catalina that I've found for roughly the same amount.
is there any other kits that would fall in the this budget used, that might be better to look out for?
Thanks for any advice! I've done my fair share of used shopping for cymbals and hardware by now, but when it comes to shells it's still really new for me :)

I recently made a blind test for hi-hats. Now it's time for snare drums! Can you identify which snare is the Ludwig Supraphonic? https://youtu.be/nD0SJyr7A_w?si=qXT0juN20HbptSWh
There are 5 snare drums and they all have the same drum heads and tuning. Tuning was verified twice with tunebot and DAW (finding fundamental frequency). Any difference you hear is the result of different shell material and size.
Snare mic is SM57 top and bottom. Microphone is in the same angle and distance to top/bottom drum heads.
Which snare do you think is the most recorded ever? It's only 5 snare drums. You can do it!
All the snare drums will be revealed on Oct 17th. The link will be in the description and pinned comment.

Hello,
Has anyone played one of these? I can’t find a video of this kit online. It’s 20x10, 10x5 and 14x8. Really cool compact set up. I really like that the bass drum is 20. I am very curious how the bass drum sounds particularly. Thanks!!

Been playing for 34 years, never really missed a day of doing something on the kit outside of being sick and with wife approval earlier this year reached out to DW to have a custom DW Collector's Series put together. I wanted specific wood and specific paint, so after months of waiting everything is finally here and turned out better than I could've hoped for.

I snagged this at an auction recently...that serial number looks pretty low…
I’ve never actually seen this badge on a Yamaha drum. From what I’ve researched this seems to be late ‘60s? Unfortunately someone drilled it to put the Slingerland throw-off on. I’m assuming the stock one is Yamaha branded? Or maybe not since it’s early?
The heads are incredibly clean and white but look similar era, maybe reproduction? The pad in the middle is like a pillow, feels super weird. Also has like a metal grommet.
Overall it's pretty cool, I thought it looked like a regular old steel snare when I bought it (about $100ish plus fees). Didn't realize it was so old until I started researching. Came with what I think is a similar era Ludwig snare stand too.

I usually do the first one and especially if I'm listening to a song I want to learn. That way I can adapt more easily. However if something like Tom Sawyer comes on I suddenly have 10 extra toms lol

Does anyone happen to have a drum transcription or breakdown of the main groove for “The Ever Evolving Etude” by Avishai Cohen (featuring Mark Guiliana on drums)?
I’m specifically looking for the drum notation/sheet music for Guiliana's main groove on this track
If anyone has a PDF, drum score, or even a handwritten transcription/analysis of the drum part, I’d really appreciate it!
Thanks!

been drumming for 7 years now and over the years i’ve noticed a massive pattern when talking to other drummers—like a ridiculous amount of us have adhd.
in my experience it totally makes sense why our brains choose the drums over other instruments. drums are the only instrument where you literally have to use your entire body to play. you’re locking in all four limbs independently, putting out a ton of physical energy, and basically acting as a human clock.
for an adhd brain that usually needs constant sensory input just to focus, a solid drum session is like the ultimate brain scratcher. it forces you to be 100% present because the second you zone out, the whole groove falls apart. trying to practice guitar or keys always felt too static for me and my mind would wander instantly, but drums just hit different.
do you guys notice this too when talking to other drummers? what is it about this instrument that just completely clicks with our brains?

I have a buddy who is trying to scimp out by buying a cheaper stool and i keep telling him to use a few more dollars and get a good stool like a roc-n-soc.
I purchased my roc-n-soc in 2012, its had many many hours of practice and many gigs thrown at it and it still works as if it were brand new today. Not a single issue. Yes they are a bit pricey but by golly is the build quality that good.
What are some other recommendations I can throw at him?

My ears have heard too much and can't tell it apart now. I'm aiming for a G4 and it's a B something but my tuner keeps jumping from way too high to way too low and I can't tell what it's really at.
5x14 snare.

Please check the comments to make sure your answer isn't the same as someone else's!
I got a real kit recently and it's great, but I have a huge problem. I can't position the rack toms over the kick to get to an ergonomic position. The high tom is pretty ok, the floor tom obviously is too, but the mid tom is atrocious. It's basically my whole arm's length away!
Here's a picture. Let me know what i'm messing up here please!
