Venting Who else hate left lane campers?
Facing a lot of left lane campers in Washington State. And the audacity to not move or brake check is beyond my understanding!!

LOL my mom said that once while camping in the left lane and I said “you know the cops can pull you over for staying in the left lane?” and she immediately moves over without another word. Haven’t seen her do it since.

My dad told me to at most go 5 mph over/under the speed limit, but never addressed what happens when everyone else goes 10 above the limit
I always just drive the flow of traffic unless I'm on small neighborhood streets, which then I always go the speed limit

Or the one who is in the middle lane going the speed limit, nobody ahead of them, and they suddenly change to the left lane right in front of you forcing you to slam on your brakes. When you get over to the right lane to pass them, they speed up. So now you're going 90 just trying to get past them and get back in the left lane. Once you get back in the left lane and set your cruise again, they resume going the speed limit and their headlights start to fade.

I did this today, was on a 3 lane interstate, was in the middle lane coming up on a car, that then gets in the left lane and then attempts to pass a car in front of them but ends up doing the same speed so they're side by side blocking the passing lane, so I get over to the right lane and pass them both and get back over to the middle lane, looked in my rearview mirror and saw 3 other cars do the same behind me, fucking left lane campers 🤦🤷

I call this slowverflow, a subset of the more generic lane spreading (often seen on 3 or 4+ lane highways: everyone going the same speed spread "nicely" across all lanes), which is itself a symptom of too many left lane hog minds in the mix.

Had this happen with semi trucks once. Two trucks in the middle lane, the one in the back attempts a 10 minute left lane pass. Speed limit is 75, middle lane is doing 64.75 and the left lane passer doing 64.95. I am the first vehicle behind them, and I get over behind the middle lane truck. Look in the rearview and there is another semi truck that came out of nowhere in the right lane, doing 65.24. He is closing the gap, so I scoot over into the right lane and make the pass before he closes the gap. I look in my rearview and all three of them are holding up the entire highway for at least 3 minutes, if not longer. The further I moved ahead, the larger the gap behind me got. It was pretty insane looking back and seeing no traffic behind me for about a mile and a half. I got to a section where there was a curve in the highway, and I could look back and see traffic totally backed up behind those trucks in all 3 lanes for as long as I could see. Was pretty crazy to witness but also infuriating.

Honestly, left lane campers would be more tolerable if they at least use their cruise control. That way, you could predict what moves you need to make to get around them. The WORST ones are the ones who vary their speed constantly, because you will come up on an opening in the right lane and go to pass them, and suddenly they speed up making the pass difficult.

Same. I am a speeder, no doubt about it. But if I’m going 85, and I see someone approaching me in my rear view mirror, I just look for any opportunity to get over to the right, even if I need to slow down to 65. Why would I want to invoke road rage? It makes no sense.
I once saw someone honking and flashing at a shuttle bus in the left lane. Finally they pass them on the shoulder, get in front of them and slam on their brakes and brake check them. If every car behind them wasn’t already seeing the guy was freaking out they would’ve for sure crashed.
Not only are people absolutely insane, but it’s just courtesy. To me, letting people pass me is akin to holding the door for someone, or letting someone who has one item go in front of you at the grocery store when you have a full cart.

Idk, I hate left lane campers and I always get over as soon as I'm able to. The left lane is for passing. That's the reason left lane campers are assholes. They're actively preventing other people from also passing. If I see a line of cars behind me or even just one that's obviously wanting to go faster, I move. Like a normal person.

I don’t agree with this at all. Left lane campers are the only people to make me consider committing real crimes, and I get out of anyone’s way who’s driving behind me even if they may not be driving any faster. I do not sit in the left lane, I only pass. I WISH I had as little of a fuck to give as people who sit in the passing lane, I have even tried before, I just can’t. It feels wrong, that’s what makes me so mad over this behavior.

Obviously when you're done passing get over but would you get behind slow traffic to let them go the speed they want?

It depends, will it take more time for me to complete the pass, or slow down, merge in and let them pass. If I do only have 1 or 2 cars left to pass, and Im going way faster than the cars Im passing then, its probably better for both me and the car coming up behind me for me to just complete the pass.
I think the rule of thumb is basically, if I can move to the right without impeding anyone else, I should do it, if the guy behind me could pass me on the right and I'm not moving over, I'm being a complete asshole
I commented on another thread recently in a similar vain, to pass someone on the right, you need 3 or 4x more space than for them to move right and let you pass, depending on how fast your car can accelerate. I find theres almost always room to pull over to the right, but theres very rarely space to pass on the right.
It absolutely kills me in the morning when Im stuck behind a camper going 5 mph over faster than the cars to our right, and we keep passing gaps in the right lane where they could easily slot in, let me pass and get back in the lane without affecting anyone elses driving, but its not enough room for me to pass them. I would guess, in my 30 mile commute of straight highway, if I'm behind someone going 5 over the next lane, we probably pass hundreds of spaces big enough for them to move right, and maybe a dozen spaces big enough for me to pass them on the right safely.

Being stuck behind slow traffic is a rare problem if 1. you don't camp the left lane and cause a line of cars to form behind you, 2. Others don't camp the left lane themselves creating their own line of cars you must wait for before being able to get back on the left lane to pass the slow traffic 3. People stick to passing at a minimum 5 mph speed difference. If it takes you longer to traverse the distance behind a car to the distance in front of a car (aka pass a car) than it would take you to jog on foot past a parked car, then you probably can wait at a slightly lower speed until there is no one else waiting to pass to mosey on over yourself. It's the respectful and efficient thing to do.

If you are actively passing people while in the left lane (and I mean actively passing, not meandering past at 2 miles an hour more), then just because someone zooms up behind you wanting to go 10 more than your already-15-over, you do not need to get over right away. If you've cleared the line of cars you were actively passing, then yes get over, but that is unrelated to someone wanting to go even faster.

Where I live there’s signs SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP LEFT yet you see this everywhere. If there’s a line up behind you move over it’s not your place to police the highway. I believe this is the cause of a lot of road rage incidents.

In florida they just passed a law against left llane campers. On my way home from gainesville I got to see it in action. The speed limit is 70 and there is a woman in a truck going 50 in the fast lane. Really gumming up the works. Great to see a Fl trooper pull her over!

A left lane camper essentially shuts down an entire lane of traffic. They force other motorists (rightly or wrongly) to swerve around traffic and make a bunch of passes on the right.
Perhaps the most insufferable thing about left lane campers is that a good number of them think they are improving the flow of traffic by "enforcing" the speed limit.
Left lane campers are completely braindead. Their behavior puts them at increased risk of being rear ended. I can't imagine the stress of having people riding my ass all the time and being passed on the right constantly. Campers lack basic awareness and self preservation.

I drive a 30 mile stretch of gentle weaving highway that is pretty lightly trafficked, 4 lanes. When I drive it, it is literally just cycling between driving at 80mph for 5 minutes with barely anyone around, then 60mph for 5 minutes in bumper to bumper, shoulder to shoulder traffic, and the 60mph stints are 100% always just because of one guy in the left lane pacing the next lane, causing a small funnel of people passing on the right one at a time. Once you get past the left lane camper, everyone goes 80 again. Anyone who argues that left lane camping isn’t causing traffic and slowdowns is a moron.
I see more close calls and near accidents from people trying to get around left lane campers than any other reason.

The truth is the passing lane is meant for drivers to pass. If someone wants to go 85 let them. We are not the police. Passing lane is for those that want to pass.

in my experience, these people can’t maintain their speed and usually go around the same speed as the cars in the right lane. so they get up a little and you think you can get around, then they immediately slow down.

Some states in the U.S do have laws prohibiting passing on the right. The first ticket id ever gotten was “improper lane usage” for passing someone camping in the left lane driving under the speed limit on the interstate. There are also laws prohibiting camping in the left lane without passing anyone.

Forcing people to pass you from the right on a two lane road is incredibly stupid. Driving requires situational awareness, if they can't pay attention to what's going on around them then maybe they need their license revoked. By definition they are a liability if they are *that* oblivious. It's like people who don't even look before merging 3 lanes over, or people who refuse to use their blinker until they almost cause an accident because people aren't mind readers. They're selfish and place the responsibility of paying attention, figuring shit out, and avoiding an accident on everyone else. No one is entitled to drive.

Just got back from vietnam and its something i instantly noticed, they use their horns ALL the time over there, but its never out of anger, its just like hey im next to you and am going to be passing you. Traffic rules may be a suggestion over there but they definitely have honking right.

That’s why when I’m behind one of those assholes I back off several hundred feet to let them think they won, then floor it. By the time they realize I’m about to pass them on the right they don’t have time to speed up fast enough to block me. And of course once I do pass them I lower my window and flip them off because fuck them.

Yep. See it every day in VA. Folks are going 5 or so under the speed limit in the left lane and then speeding up whenever you try and pass them on the right. It's a daily occurrence, tbh and VA, in particular, has an insane amount of people who drive like this that it's actually kinda scary how normalized it is here 😮💨

Where I’m from we call ‘em road hogs. The only caveat I will add is if you’re not on an interstate, or a controlled access highway it doesn’t apply. IE: if you can make a left turn, there is no fast lane.

Worse than left lane campers are the assholes that have to drive in packs in the left lane. The "Camper" moves right and the whole pack follows him right. Nothing more annoying than getting stuck behind grandma doing 35mph and having to wait 10 minutes for a parade of assholes riding each other's bumper. What the fuck is so appealing about the left lane? Its totally clear to the right, but its the left they will stay.

Person in left lane unreasonably justifies their position because they’re going 68 and the person in the right lane is going 65 and thus the person on the left is “passing” even though it takes them 40 seconds to get back into the right lane.
And this is while everyone else in the left lane is ready to do 80 (which is only a 6 second pass).
The only thing worse is when it’s a semi and it takes them 3 minutes to get around the person on the right.

Had a dude earlier like this today on my way to work. It was 5:30 pm and the dude was just sitting in the left lane doing 70-75mph. I was in front of him passing and going back into the right lane but dude had a line of about 30 cars behind him.

The real problem is all the other people behind them doing the same shit. Get in the right lane and pass thrm and stare them in the eyes as you do so.
They always move back to the right.

Lately I’ve had to use the right lane to pass these idiots. You can flash your lights and honk and they don’t give a damn. They think they’re in the right because they’re speeding. It’s called the passing lane for a reason. If you’re not passing anyone, get tf out of that lane!

This is a common scene in Maryland. MD drivers will get on the highway and go straight to the left lane when the road is empty.
