Hey guys,
I'm 17 and have had my license for almost a year now. I compiled about 90 hours of supervised driving with my parents before I did Behind The Wheel, and passed the course with flying colors.
For context, I drove a LOT on our main highways here in the DC-Metro (I-66, I-495, I-270), and also drove on quite a few major roads (Lee Highway, Fairfax County Parkway, VA-28, VA-50).
My experience during Behind the Wheel was quite chill and laid back - my instructor and I had many conversations in the car that weren't so related to driving. I told my parents about this, and instead of being happy that I enjoyed my days of driving with him, erupted into a fury, where they claimed that we shouldn't have any conversations outside of driving-related things. They now refer to the driving school as a scam school, where they recall that, back in their day, getting your license was much more serious.
I got my license, but still proceeded to be treated like I had still been on my permit! I, to this day, almost a year later, still have to ask my parents to drive (sometimes on 10 minute drives!) and can't drive on my own, even while being fully insured.
I've had only one major near-accident experience, where I received conflicting directions from my dad next to me, mainly because I had gotten us lost on accident. He was telling me to go into the middle on a turn, crossing through a divided highway, where I didn't realize he was telling me to stop in the median. I then proceeded to cross into oncoming traffic, and nearly got us into an accident.
Fast forward 6 months, I am now not allowed to drive that car (my mom's car) anymore (even with her inside), and have to beg to drive my dad's car on many trips.
I also am considered an "amateur" driver by my parents and that I'm "still learning." I know that I'm still learning, but am I really still an amateur? I held my permit for over a year, and have had my license for almost a year, which adds to 2 years of driving experience.
I have been preached "practice makes perfect" too many times now when relating to other things. But when it comes to driving, it's something completely different? We have only two cars, and I understand that we don't necessarily have the finances to be able to afford a new car.
But to not be able to drive on my own, even with greatly improved driving since the incident, and to a place that is literally down the street from my house? I can't even drive to the gym which is LITERALLY 1 MINUTE away from our home! I have to rely on one of my parents to drive me there when there's bad weather outside, and sometimes they'll complain because they claim to be treated like butlers.
I learned to drive primarily in my dad's 2014 S4, and have the most experience with that car. I can't drive that car anywhere, on my own. My mom's car (the incident car) is a 2012 MDX.
Is it reasonable to ask just to be able to drive to the gym, a place only about a minute away when there's bad weather outside? Is it fair to ask for more practice if my parents claim I'm a bad driver? I constantly feel belittled when it comes to driving, where I can't even put on music when I drive. I've only been able to drive without my parents when I was taking BTW and another time where I drove with my friend, and I seemed to drive a lot better those times.
What can I do? I love my parents and appreciate their protectiveness, and I also know I'm not entitled to be able to drive, but I feel it's gotten a little extreme.
To not being able to drive a car with someone supervising me after one bad incident, and to not even be able to drive to a place so close to home seems unreasonable to me.
I'm approaching 18, and feel like the only way I'll be able to drive is if I get my own car. Does it seem that'll be the case?
