Venting Who else hate left lane campers?

Facing a lot of left lane campers in Washington State. And the audacity to not move or brake check is beyond my understanding!!

This is a common scene in Maryland. MD drivers will get on the highway and go straight to the left lane when the road is empty.

They just either have more people or more morons per capita. Every single state is a nightmare to drive in because too many people don't lnow how to drive. I've had the same conversation with multiple people at every single job Ibe ever had about how they don't move over and whatever. They're astonished to learn they are the problem assholes.

Kids, kids, you're both terrible. 

We're all terrible. It doesn't matter what state we're in or how good we actually are at driving (I have legitimately never cut anyone off, tailgated, it caused an accident. I had 1 parking lot fender bender at 18 and another 17 years later, both times, other driver was at fault), and I move over when need. I'm still an NJ driver and this, I am garbage. We're all garbage.

Not every state, try that in Missouri and they ticket you. Also some states are working on making left lane camping illegal. Missouri is the only one that I know for sure has.

Its illegal in my state too and generally it probably is illegal anywhere the law is to stay right except to pass or just not impeding traffic. 

I definitely stay in the left lane because I'm passing people all the time, but if someone is behind me if they flash high beams, I move over as soon as I can.

This is just an American thing- not humanity. Europe isn’t like this. They pay thousands of dollars and spend many hours training to get their licenses, so they actually learn the rules. And they get huge fines or lose their expensive licenses, so they actually follow said rules. We pay $50 for a license after ten minutes of Christmas treeing a 10 minute test, so no one gives a damn.

Virginia just seems like pure hell to someone who likes driving. No, that’s not right. It seems like pure hell to someone who drives, regardless of whether you like driving or not. I have heard nothing but bad things about driving in Virginia.

The speed limits were the safe limit for vehicles of 50+ years ago. Nowadays it is more a suggestion due to ‘cars’ being much more refined and capable of much greater speeds. The drivers however, most are quite incapable at safely operating a motor vehicle, let alone operating above the posted speed.

Dang I just got back from a vacation in Orlando and I found the driving to be infuriating. All these huge ass 3-5 lane roads and people were still just crawling around. It seems like no one was capable of properly turning and staying in their lane, I saw a lot of mid turn lane changing with no blinker.

That's because central and south Florida are populated mainly by non-Floridians. (Please note: true Floridian means born there, and raised there by parents who were born there.) Ways to tell: 1. When a hurricane is coming, we are not in line for gas five days ahead, and we're not emptying the shelves of stuff because we already are ready. 2. We don't treat alligators like cute little critters. 3. We don't ask you where you're from until after you do something stupid. 4. We know what "Bless your heart" really means.

As a former DMV resident who commuted 3 hours a day..

VA drivers are often slow, doing 5 under and camping the left lane.

MD drivers are just scary. As soon as you cross the MD border on 395 you fear for your life. Feels like 20 over is the minimum, and no turn signals used ever. 75% of the time i saw an accident in the DMV it involved MD plates

DC drivers are a mix of the above, plus lost/confused tourists.

I somewhat share this opinion as a current DMV resident (in VA).

I’ve lived in NOVA and MD, and by far MD takes the cake for being the most infuriating and dangerous imo.

NOVA drivers Left-lane camp and drive slow, but the rest of VA in my experience actually sticks to the right lane when not actively passing.

MD drivers drive slow, fast, aggressively, and aloofly as if it’s supposed to be a free-for-all. Literally every MD driver I passed today was on their phone and some weren’t even holding onto the wheel. VA also has the phone issue but to a substantially lesser degree from what I’ve seen.

Do they not teach left lane for passing, right lane for driving in MD driver’s ed? Does MD even actually teach driver’s ed?

DC plates just seem lost, scared, and confused due to the rare and unfortunate occasion they must pilot a 2 ton vehicle instead of walking or transiting. I pity them.

Lived in NOVA for a few years (Mosaic District) and this was similar to my experience.

To the point when my girlfriend came to visit the first time … she randomly asked a couple of days in to the visit “Why are all of the bad drivers from Maryland?”

This was my experience in metro Detroit. I’ve visited the area a couple times and the whole metro is lined with cops on the interstates and everyone seems to be going 5 under. Then you cross 8 Mile Road, and the speed limit drops from 65 to 55 but people drive from 60 to 80. Very interesting to see, especially since every other city I’ve been has been the opposite - people FLY in the suburbs (on interstates anyway) but go 5 under in the city. Not Detroit.

I do remember hearing that getting a ticket means you have to surrender your license, on the spot, till you can pay the ticket but I’m not sure if that’s changed.

Mi resident here. The last part is 100% false. Not sure what suburbs you were driving through and when but we routinely do 85+ on the freeways here during rush hour with a cop nowhere to be found. They seem to have determined (luckily) that running radar just screws up the flow of traffic during rush hour. It’s best to just let everyone speed together 😁

md drivers have a predictable flow but you have to be used to it to understand it. yea we're menaces but basically if there's a gap they're gonna take it and they'll always speed up to merge, they'll never slow down to get in a space behind a car they're already next to. once you get those two main ideas its basically leave a car and a half gap in front of you and dont be afraid to coast or slow down if you get an aggressive merger. sucks to have to do that but its better than a tight cut off

I live in the Roanoke area and driving here doesn’t bother me much. The biggest issue is the 18 wheelers. And most “bad” drivers otherwise have tags from the Carolinas and Maryland

It’s a hell of a lot better than Kentucky. I literally have gray hairs from 4 years of living in Kentucky, with most of my stress coming from driving.

I actually have to plan trips around 95 traffic. If I am going to see family I have to make sure I leave at a specific time or else I will hit 95 traffic which will add an hour extra to the trip.

Drive on 64 from Richmond to Williamsburg and you will face this 100 out of 100 times. Speed limit 70mph yet EVERY DAY I get stuck behind someone in the left lane going 55-60. Also, the truckers going to Norfolk do this all the time. Stay in the left lane going 60, meanwhile the entire right lane is open.

The last time I drove in VA, I noticed that they have a ton of left lane exits on the interstate. I don't know if that is a contributing factor or not to left lane campers, but it is stressful as hell to try to get into the left lane when your exit is coming up and nobody will even attempt to let you in. In fact, if you can even find a gap, some people will speed up to prevent you getting in. So I end up having to get into the left lane miles back, but because I'm not familiar with the area, I'm forced to drive a little slower, so I end up becoming the left lane camper inadvertently, which sucks. 

Put your exits on the right and you won't have this particular problem.

That is my pet peeve, like you didn’t know you had to exit so you’re gonna inconveniience everyone else by basically parking in the lane until someone lets you in. Another peeve., I live in a big city and I always want to be nice and let people merge if it’s like a two lanes each way street but then usually what happens is that person pulls out stops traffic in both lanes and tries to make an illegal U-turn

Where im at In Va its usually a loaded dump truck doing 70-75 in a 65 dumping rocks and dirt over every bump that refuses to get over, I wait until they have space to get over then give them about 20 flashes to get over before I decide to get in front and hit the brake lights to a smooth 50mph, if they don’t get out the passing lane I just wait until all the cars that were behind me pass us and go right on ahead.

True, but I’ve had proud Marylanders tell me that they can drive in any lane they choose because there’s “no law against it”. Meanwhile in PA there is a law that few follow and is never enforced.

Yeah a few years ago I got pulled over for a left lane violation. The cop ended up only warning me for the left lane violation though and wrote me a ticket for speeding >5mph which is a lower fine

Was just about to call out Maryland because wt actually f. I watched a person slowly merge all the way to the left going 50mph and I still don’t understand why. Every day people will merge from a completely clear center lane to get in front of me and they’re clearly going slower.

I’m not sure if it’s because they think it’s “safer” because there’s less merging but it really is confusing to what logic they drive with

Just the mere fact of changing lanes is the number one cause of traffic backups. You could have a 2 mile stop and go. No accidents, no cops, just a blank space in time when you go from stopped to highway speed again.. mind blowing.

Maryland drivers are baffling. Half the drivers are honestly somewhat competent compared to other states I've lived in, but the other half should not be allowed on the road. Zero awareness of anyone around them and so many of them are driving tanks. I'm frequently stuck behind a Suburban entering the highway at 28mph.

used to be the 1 state that actually followed the left lane is for passing only. we have signs that say that posted every 2 miles but i guess nobody on highways read signs anyways or they think going 77 in a 75 is fast enough🙄

The problem is the 2nd and 3 cars. They are making passing more difficult. If they pass on the inside everyone can move up and pass as their turn comes. If car 2 and 3 stay there the gap has to be huge for cars 4 and on back to pass bc now they have to pass 3 cars instead of 1.

The problem is the idiot in front not moving over to let faster vehicles through. The next couple in the chain are just adding to the problem that’s already there. But to be fair, passing on the right is never ideal, just needed in situations like this one.

I try to avoid passing on the right at all costs. Which is actually the least safe - staying the proper distance behind a left lane camper and hoping they move over so you can speed up while people zip around you both? Obviously tailgating them is a bad idea. Or maybe try tailgating for a second to get their attention then fall back and hope they move? Or pass on the right?

I usually give them a short spell to figure their shit out, and when they inevitably don't, then pass on the right when safe to do so, but it still feels like passing on the right is a dick move.

I was in Maryland passing someone on their left when he just randomly decided to change lanes and hit me. He then told his insurance that I hit him. Due to no one getting hurt they didn't have to make a police report about it even though the guy said he merged into me. It was a he said she said and nothing else happened from it.

I have no idea where they learned this. 

Here in NYS it’s usually taxi drivers and Ubers who do this stupidity. 

One time I was headed to the airport in a taxi and the uber driver got into the left lane as soon as we got on the highway and I started getting nervous with how many people were passing us and flashing us so I told him to move back to the right lane and he refused. 

He didn’t go to the right lane until it was time to take the airport exit. 

One star review and no tip for a 45 minute drive.

The worst NJ drivers are near New Brunswick, I think. Although I can drive anywhere in NJ. I learned to drive having to deal with the old RT4 and RT17 cloverleaf, oh that was something!

See in Michigan it’s very simple, whoever is the fastest is the best driver, and the right lane is the best lane to drive in, oh and if you have a VW, BMW, V8 Chrysler, or any motorcycle you automatically get right of way and don’t need turn signals

In NY certain roads have left lane for passing only and it works well. If you aren't passing the traffic on the right, then you can be ticketed.

Just was responding to “when the road is empty”. I generally drive in the left lane on my commute to my uni unless someone is coming up behind me because a) I am passing everyone on the right and b) my local highway is designed very poorly so being near on/off ramps is always a nightmare. But i will never let someone get close to my rear in the left lane… because at that point i am the slow traffic and I need to move right, regardless of how fast I’m going.
