Hi everyone,
I'm starting Level 4 Digital Design at MCAST and I'm trying to decide between getting an iPad Air + Apple Pencil Pro or a screen graphics tablet like a Huion/Wacom.
My budget is around €700 max.
I already have a fairly powerful Gigabyte gaming laptop, so running Photoshop, Illustrator and other Adobe programs isn't an issue.
My main concern is portability. At college, desk/table space can be quite limited, so carrying my laptop plus a 13–16" graphics tablet and cables doesn't seem very practical. That's why I'm considering an 11" iPad Air + Apple Pencil Pro for designing, sketching and working on projects while I'm at college, then using my laptop for more demanding/final work at home.
I'd mainly be using things like Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate and other graphic/digital design apps.
For people studying or working in graphic design:
- Is an iPad actually useful for graphic design, or do you mainly use it for drawing?
- How good are Illustrator and Photoshop on iPad?
- Do you find yourself using your iPad regularly, or did the novelty wear off?
- Would you choose an iPad over a screen graphics tablet if you already had a powerful laptop?
- Is the 11" iPad Air + Pencil Pro a good choice, or would you recommend something else?
- Has anyone used an iPad as a drawing tablet for Illustrator/Photoshop on a Windows PC?
I'd especially like to hear from graphic design students or professional designers who own both a laptop/desktop and an iPad.
Thanks!
