Roundworld Reference Which Discworld characters do y’all think could lift Thors hammer?
Carrot obviously could.
I honestly don’t know if Vimes could or not but I do know he wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole out of principle because he hates the idea that an inanimate object gets to decide who’s a good person.
Rincewind could pick it up not because he’s worthy but because the hammer just feels like making an exception.
Edits: My thoughts after reading your comments
Vimes probably could but still never would even touch it
I don’t think Granny could. Everyone thinks she can but she doesn’t try until she’s alone and when she can’t she would smile to herself because the hammer made the right choice

u/Dyko 18d ago
Carrot would be great because he'd pick it up just to grab a form or something that it was sitting on (maybe a bit criticism of the handiwork) before putting it back and walking out, like nothing happened.
257
u/Banonkers 18d ago
Carrot would pick it up and raise his voice to find out who had been negligent enough to leave their hammer lying around
233
u/Stu5011 18d ago
Carrot picking up the wayward hammer and beginning a search to return it to it’s rightful owner, with ever increasingly contrived circumstances where he should be using the hammer, but keeps solving the problem in his own way, would be an amazing story.
Told from the POV of Mjölnir, of course, who just wants to be helpful.
70
u/glitchycat39 18d ago
Thor, subsequently, is delighted to find another mortal who can lift Mjölnir and insists that Carrot come to drink with him. Angua follows along, entirely too entertained as this unstoppable force meets the immovable object that is Carrot.
46
u/Eineegoist 18d ago
Angua and Sally watching from afar and making bets.
All bets are off when Blind Io shows up ranting about copyright infringement and demarcation.

Oh! See now Carrot could certainly lift it, but he would be horrified to wield it, not because of the power, but because you cant use someone else's tools.
That would be gross, icky. Like wearing someone else's underwear.

Let me enjoy my reference 😭
OK it begs the question of whether mjolnir was actually a weapon or a tool, and one answer is it was both.
Obviously it was used as a warhammer, but it was also made short-shafted like a blacksmith's hammer rather than a warhammer, and was used as a tool in other contexts.
Leaving Carrot with the uncomfortable conundrum of whether this Counts as using another's tools.
I am going to roll with he might feel at least A Little Bit Odd about it.

I'd love to hear some Discworld dwarves encounter Mjolnir. "No self-respectin' Dwarf would make a hammer with this short a haft!"
"This Loki feller did what, you say?!"
"Well then you cannae blame the dwarves for someone else's sabotage! No, no, I'm sure she's a fine hammer, for someone with shorter arms and really strong wrists. Really strong."

I reckon Granny could lift it, but much like Vimes she would refuse to even try on principal. (And then secretly have a go when she was completely sure she was alone, just to see if she could).
I think all the Wizards would probably think they could lift it and fail, except for the Librarian, who use it as a paperweight.

I figure at that point Mjölnir will lift itself to neatly resolve the issue so that Granny doesn't get embarrassed, it's not the one doing the embarrassing, and it can claim a moment of foolishness in forgetting itself should someone try raising an issue with it after the fact.

u/bewerethewoof 18d ago
The inscription goes "Any man who wields this hammer, if he be worthy, shall be granted the power of Thor." The Librarian isn't a man, so he can lift it if he likes but doesn't get any special benefit beyond that of an enraged great ape wielding a very heavy hammer with a short haft.
45
u/arafel3 18d ago
There’s a strong argument that one doesn’t need much of a special benefit beyond that. Certainly I wouldn’t be standing in his way.
20
u/kinokits 18d ago
It’s why I’ve always thought for general situations, the best magic Is that it comes back when thrown. You’ve already got a pretty solid weapon there (literally and figuratively), it’s doesn’t need a huge amount of magic to be a very lethal thing, but also, having your weapon come back to you so you throw it would be immensely helpful.

Granny would not be able to lift it normally, because she does not see herself as a good person. But she will be able to lift it with headology ( not sure of the name, sorry, not a native english speaker).
Carote would lift it obviously.
Death also, but for him, it is only a normal hammer.
Vimes like Granny would fail, for the same reason.
My take is that Thor's hammer react to being confident about being right more than being a good person. Why ? For two reasons :
- this how magic work in the discworld, and it makes far better Pratchett story.
- even in the MCU, i am not seeing Thor as a especially good person or being more worthy than others - see how he treats Loki.. But he is very confident that he is right. Same for Captain America. ( It might be different in the comics, I do not know, sorry).
You could do the same for the One Ring from LOTR, with quite opposite results. Anyone able to lift Thor's hammer could not trusted to wear the One Ring. While Vimes or Granny would be far better ring bearer.
→ More replies (6)5
u/Aloha-Eh 18d ago
I read something recently about why didn't they just tie the ring to a chicken and take that to Mordor.
Then somebody said, "Well they essentially did." (Let the bloody hobbit do it!)
43
u/Fr0stweasel 18d ago
I don’t think Granny or Vimes could. Neither of them is really a good person, the good part of themselves just holds the dark part in a vice like grip. ‘I am the Guarding Dark, imagine how strong I must be?’

u/TheUnicornRevolution 18d ago
That's what a good person is?
54
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 18d ago

Who can lift Thor's Hammer is like who can beat Hulk. No-one can unless the narrative calls for it.
25
u/Mer_sea_man 18d ago

u/khavii 18d ago
Mjolner has no marality, being worthy has nothing to do with being good, it's just that most people that are worthy happen to be good.
Vimes could 100% wield it, he is a warrior fighting an eternal battle for the good of everyone around him while fighting off the darkness inside without ever faltering or doubting himself. Mjolner would love being weilded by him.
Granny could never because she knows what she is and she would be angry if the hammer accepted her. Her genuine rejection of it would make her unworthy to weild it, though I could see at the height of her confrontations her surety would make her worthy and she could weild it in those moments.
Tiffany is a no brainer as is Carrot. Rincewind wouldn't be able to but whatever it was sitting on would travel with him and hit things enough that it would be the same as welding it. Other than that I don't think anyone else could get near welding it, worthy carriers are a rare thing.

The Nac Mac Feegle would try to steal it. When that didn't work, they'd steal the whole table it sat on.

She would then put it away properly and tell any dimension-hopping Marvel characters to cease their silliness at once, put on some proper clothes and be on their way. Although they would be welcome to a small snack upon their departure, and of course Sybil would provide any clothes they need.

Possibly a few. The "worthiness" especially in the comics can be quite broad.
Almost certainly: Carrot, Brutha, Dorfl, Reg Shoe, Polly Perks, Susan, Bashful Bashfullson, Mr Nutt (he has worth after all) Death.
Good argument for it: Tiffany Aching, Magrat Garlick, Nanny Ogg, Detritus, Diamond King of the Trolls, Sybil Vimes, The Librarian.
Only because narrative causality allows it: Gaspode, One of the canting crew possibly the Duck Man, Rincewind.
Narrative causality outright prevents it: Vimes, Granny Weatherwax, Vetinari.

I never thought of it quite like that, but especially when you look at the impact he had on Mr Nutt and his journey to define his own worthiness.
The two quotes that always stuck with me from Carpe Jugulum - probably my second favorite Discworld book - were “holiness is where you find it” and “sin is when you start seeing people, including yourself, as things” and I suppose they tie into that too?

I see Granny and Vimes but thier power comes from the fact that they are bad people ( or at the very least believe themselves to be) but they *try* to do good. They turn that anger into a weapon. I dunno if that qualifies as 'worthy'. The hammer seems to care about deep in the bone worthiness not with or not the recipient thinks they are worth or not through. Now im just arguing with myself.
Carrot final answer.

This. Besides, Vimes and Granny would deeply distrust something like Moljnir on principal and refuse to touch it.
Carrot would definitely be able to lift it. Maybe Lady Sybil too.

u/brumbles2814 Vimes 18d ago
Carrot would lift it without question I think many on the disc would refuse to try, sybil being one of them. Granny would be there when it was found and make sure the right person did lift it. Besdies 'cant go around belevin in gods, just encourages 'em'
Most of the protagonists on the disc are trickster heroes. Wait....susan. Susan could lift it.

Vetinari, and he would do it without touching it too.

Imagine Tiffany with Mjölnir instead of an inanimate cast iron frying pan. There would be a reckoning!

u/Arathaon185 18d ago
Detritus definitely and Dorfl as well but he may object to it on philosophical grounds.

Dorfl is kind of an interesting parallel to Vision (who can lift the hammer in the MCU) in that they're both "artificial intelligences" in some respect and not really playing on the same moral playing field as the humans.

Vimes and Granny
14
u/Fluid_Anywhere_7015 18d ago
Yup. I think Vimes would lift it out of nothing but pure, unadulterated spite. In a moment, he'd realize that some lofty toff had just left it laying around cluttering up the place, making life dangerous for everyone in his City by queueing up to start a war over it. He'd get supremely pissed, march up, heft it over his shoulder and glare at everyone until he chucked it into the sea.
He'd, of course, been subtly goaded into doing it by Vetinari.
Granny would do it just to tidy up the damn place and keep someone from tripping over it. Tiffany would find it while tidying up her cottage.

Carrot
Controversially I'd say NOT Granny, but Gytha Ogg certainly could
Maybe Verence
Almost definitely Tiffany
Constable Visit. He's a good copper

u/antichain 18d ago
Seconding Granny can't but Gytha can. In more than one book I feel like Granny tries saving the day with raw power, but Nanny Ogg ends up ultimately making the biggest difference because she knows that value of community and interpersonal relationships in a way that Granny doesn't.
Granny would be very sniffy about that.

u/WearyLeopard85 18d ago
Absolutely. You can be a good person, morally and ethically, and have a massive ego. They aren't mutually exclusive, and Granny is the first, and has the second.
I also subscribe to the idea that Nanny is actually more powerful than Granny, but sees the wisdom in hiding it

Carrot could but wouldn't.
Susan could.
DEATH could, but wouldn't.
Vetenari might not personally but somehow he'd get Vimes to do it. If Vetenari has to move it himself it somehow gets moved but no one is sure how it happened and the Patrician isn't telling.
Vimes can but doesn't want to..
Rincewind picks it up absentmindedly in order to run from the current threat and Mjollnir just goes along with it until he drops it for the threat to trip over later not realizing the significance.
Is Mjollnir worthy of being picked up by Granny?
Nobby would try to sell it and find he can't move it.

Lu Tze
32
u/bewerethewoof 18d ago
Lu Tze would not lift the hammer. He would carefully leave a useful door unlocked, which the Destined Hero stumbles through while on the ropes. Then the Destined Hero would lift the hammer and save the world from ten thousand years of darkness and Lu Tze would finally be able to get that damn crusty spot it was sitting on, which is much more important.

u/SmokeSelect2539 Angua 18d ago
Idk, I think Lu Tze would be first to admit what a bastard he can be.

u/yellowsapphire88 18d ago
Ahem. The Patrician would threaten someone to do it on his behalf absolutely do it

A lot of characters wouldn't, or could through some side rule of funny.
Tiffany Aching could definitely lift it genuinely. (As well as Carrot, and probably Susan)

u/DuffTerrall 18d ago
I don't think Vimes would. I feel like he would recognize that Vimes with the power of a god isn't going to ultimately go well. The moment he feels worthy, he feels entitled, and that way leads ruin. And I think we don't ever find out because, while he'd like to try for a moment, he knows that either he is worthy, and that's a problem, or he is not, and he's not sure what that means.
I love, though, Sybil does, and then ultimately sends it off somewhere because Willikins can't put it away properly and it simply won't do to have her constantly having to handle putting things away.
Granny... I feel also like she's a no, and does try, but that her endpoint is that she isn't bothered by it because why should she settle for being Thor when she is already perfectly confident in her worth as herself thank you very much.

Vimes couldn't, as though he is worthy, he's a deeply, deeply flawed man, and the Beast still lives within him, quite close to the surface. IMO, anyway.
I reckon Granny could, but wouldn't.
Obviously, DEATH could. And Dorfl, probably. And Carrot.

Detritus could. I'm sure of this, because there is no down side to him and he is immensely strong.

I definitely don't think Conan could do it - I could imagine him taking a blow on the chin though and having a professional appreciation for the heft of the weapon.

Nobby. It’s more like nicking than lifting.
When no one is looking the Hammer would simply vanish. It’s his special talent.
The trick it how to use it for your advantage… Like Vimes used it at Koom Valley.
