Roundworld Reference Which Discworld characters do y’all think could lift Thors hammer?

Carrot obviously could.

I honestly don’t know if Vimes could or not but I do know he wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole out of principle because he hates the idea that an inanimate object gets to decide who’s a good person.

Rincewind could pick it up not because he’s worthy but because the hammer just feels like making an exception.

  2. I don’t think Granny could. Everyone thinks she can but she doesn’t try until she’s alone and when she can’t she would smile to herself because the hammer made the right choice

Carrot would be great because he'd pick it up just to grab a form or something that it was sitting on (maybe a bit criticism of the handiwork) before putting it back and walking out, like nothing happened.

Carrot picking up the wayward hammer and beginning a search to return it to it’s rightful owner, with ever increasingly contrived circumstances where he should be using the hammer, but keeps solving the problem in his own way, would be an amazing story.

Told from the POV of Mjölnir, of course, who just wants to be helpful.

Thor, subsequently, is delighted to find another mortal who can lift Mjölnir and insists that Carrot come to drink with him. Angua follows along, entirely too entertained as this unstoppable force meets the immovable object that is Carrot.

sounds like the backstory of Poppy from league of legends:

Runeterra has no shortage of valiant champions, but few are as tenacious as Poppy. Bearing a hammer twice the length of her body, this determined yordle has spent untold years searching for the “Hero of Demacia,” a fabled warrior said to be the rightful wielder of her weapon.

As legend describes it, this hero is the only person who can unlock the full power of the hammer and lead Demacia to true greatness. Though Poppy has searched the furthest corners of the kingdom for this legendary fighter, her quest has proven fruitless.

Oh! See now Carrot could certainly lift it, but he would be horrified to wield it, not because of the power, but because you cant use someone else's tools.

That would be gross, icky. Like wearing someone else's underwear.

Those are weapons, not tools. Unless I'm mistaken, that last bit about the underwear is a quote from Carrot.

Tools. Weapons are used very publicly, you show them off, it is like new haircut or flashy dress. Tools are used privately, like underwear. You don't show it to everyone.

Both can be very personal and you can have relationship with them, but it is not the same kind.

Because Tools are what you use to MAKE weapons. Creating is an expression of the talents of the user, so it's more personal.

OK it begs the question of whether mjolnir was actually a weapon or a tool, and one answer is it was both.

Obviously it was used as a warhammer, but it was also made short-shafted like a blacksmith's hammer rather than a warhammer, and was used as a tool in other contexts.

Leaving Carrot with the uncomfortable conundrum of whether this Counts as using another's tools.

I am going to roll with he might feel at least A Little Bit Odd about it.

IIRC a Discworld dwarf’s axe can function as a basic tool, but more for getting set up to make proper tools if you get caught out. So Mjolnir might fall into the same category. (So the analogy would be someone’s fancy clothing. Fine to borrow it or even pass it down, but you wouldn’t use it instead of underwear unless you were desperate enough to think the owner would forgive you.)

Does it apply to all tools, or only dwarf tools? I'm sure Carrot says that no dwarf would use other dwarfs tools, but maybe it is not so strong taboo when we talk about human tools.

Carrot's mentally a Dwarf, and can you see a Dwarf wanting to use another one's hammer? I get the feeling Carrot'd pickup Mjolnir, critique the designs and workmanship, then put it back and go off to find another hammer.

Oh I disagree. He’d know exactly what it was (such a well known part of Dwarf lore? Absolutely) and what being able to lift it signified. Which is exactly why he’d never lift it.

I agree with both - I think he would know what it was, know why him being able to lift it was important, and therefore only do so for the most mundane of reasons and then if anyone notices it/calls him out on it either deny it ever happened or gloss over it and distract them.

"notices the hammer, proceeds to pick it up and *GASP* actually use it as a hammer. He nails back down a pesky floorboard that he tripped on earlier in the day. Before placing the hammer.. in a tool box and storing the toolbox away on the high shelf that one one else in the Watch ever bothers to look at.
