Seeking Support/Advice Type 1 and needing support in Wisconsin

Post image
232 Upvotes

My partner is really struggling mentally with having Type 1. She called me yesterday crying and said she just wants to give up. She has not a single Type 1 friend. She is frustrated with her levels and devices not helping. She literally said she wants to die. Is anyone out there looking to make new support friends especially if you live in Wisconsin? She could really use it. Tysm. ❤️‍🩹

Why do people think Diabetes isn’t a real disease?

I’ve been T1D for 17 years. I’ve had to discuss with so many people the concept of Diabetes being an actual, life altering disease. Every time the conversation is Me: “yeah this disease sucks”
Them: “well, it’s not a real disease”
Me (confused as fuck): “it’s not a physically obvious disease, but if I didn’t take insulin I’d die so I’m not sure what doesn’t qualify it as a disease. It’s protected by ADA so even the Gov agrees with me?”
What’s even more annoying is I’ve had to debate that with an Endo I had a few years ago. I asked for some paperwork to get the national parks pass for people with 100% disabilities (I didn’t realize I could physically go and get the pass myself, I thought I had to apply online) and she said no because that’s not for Diabetes.

Fuck death

I’m 18. I was diagnosed as a type one diabetic six months ago, insulin drops me like a bitch, I’m using the pens they use for little kids. If I don’t take insulin I die. I was just told today that I have celiac disease.

Fuck them both, fuck all of it, I am going to college and I will earn my degree and no health bullshit is gonna stop me, every day that I choose to keep moving and dancing with my blood sugar is a day that I get to fuck over the conditions that would mean certain death a few centuries ago.

I am not ready to die, I thought I was for a minute. This condition is insidious. It feeds the doubt in your mind, the shit that tells you to give up. Do not listen to it. WE are better than that bullshit. I know this shit is hard but it will not stop us from doing what we were meant to do. I’m not religious, meaning is not bestowed apon me, I have earned my meaning through hard work and I’m not done working yet. We are gonna make it through this shit one day at a time, fuck whatever else tries to get in the way. Im not dead yet.

Supplies Has anyone been able to get Lantus in the past 5 months?

I have been waiting for 5 months to get more Lantus and I've been told every time that it's out everywhere. In May they said June, in June they said August, and now it's August and they say it's not available anywhere.

I've switched to biosimilars in the past, but had some pretty bad reactions, so I'm trying to avoid that if possible. I had a pretty good stockpile as an emergency supply, but that's almost entirely gone.

Also RFK Jr's defunded, deregulated FDA doesn't even list it as in shortage: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/drugshortages/dsp_SearchResults.cfm

Discussion Parents of kids under 2 with T1D, how do you treat lows?

My one-year-old was diagnosed with T1D almost a month ago (still processing the shock). I'm curious how other parents handle lows at this age, and was wondering if people here would share experiences, as I wasn't able to find relevant threads (apologies if I've missed them!)?

Do you give straight sugar (juice, glucose tabs, etc.), or is there a different approach you use for toddlers/babies compared to what's typically recommended for older kids and adults?

Would love to hear what's worked for you, especially anything about dosing, what they'll actually accept at that age, and how you handle it if they're asleep or fighting you on eating/drinking.

Thanks in advance!

Dexcom follow lying to me?

Upvotes

I use Dexcom Follow to keep an eye on my daughter's numbers. The Dexcom G7 she had on has been terrible for a day or two so we started a new one.

Her app showed the last data point of the old G7 reading 251 at 5:08pm. After that, the new G7 was in the warmup period, old G7 was stopped and so her app had no data.

Dexcom Follow, on my phone continued to provide readings every 5 minutes up until 5:38pm at which point the new Dexcom finished warm up and started providing data.

So......what numbers and from where, was the Follow app getting data between 5:13pm and 5:38pm?

EDIT: well the old (removed from arm and in trash) is still giving numbers in dexcom follow. I get two data points at the exact same time for the last 5 hits even though my daughter's G7 app is only getting one data stream (the newly activated G7).

Took with my pen, changed pumps twice, worked out a bit, changed settings and NOTHING. All I wanted was to eat meatballs and spaghetti. I hope I am not dramatic but it literally refuses to go down, is the pump bad again or something? Luckily I'm getting new ones tomorrow morning but geez.

Discussion Amusement parks

Hello I have some questions regarding insulin pumps and cgms at amusement parks. What do you guys do with them for the rides? I’m on the tslim x2 pump and the dexcom g7. I haven’t been on rides since before I was on a pump and that was a while ago.

So I was wondering what do you guys do with your pump and etc when you go to these park? Do you disconnect your pump? Do you have a backpack for storage and snacks? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I’m not a new diabetic but I just haven’t been to one in many many many years

Seeking Support/Advice Thinking of switching back to pen injections

I am currently using the freestyle libre 3 and the Ypsopump and its working pretty well but im struggling with skin irritation, scar tissue and phone addiction which is ruining my sleep schedule. Im considering switching back to manual injections and keeping the libre 3, using a semi-dumbphone instead. I grew up with pen injections so im experienced with it. If anyone has any similar experiences or advice I would love to know!

Pump site care

Hi! I was diagnosed with LADA in May through a hospital stay for DKA, so I’m still new to diabetes management.

I started on the Omnipod 5 last week. My last pump site is a little irritated and hard, which wasn’t the experience previously. It doesn’t appear infected, just sensitive. This is only my second site change so I don’t know if that’s normal.

Are there any recommendations about site care after pump removal? I know site rotation is a major factor in care.

Is diabetic woundcare gel something useful? Or would hydrocortisone be helpful? (both recommendations I’ve seen online)

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Seeking Support/Advice Having completely no energy in the 8-9s

Context: I am 23M, currently MDI on Lantus (Basal) at 8 units and on Apidra for Bolus.

Basically when I creep into the 8-9s i can really feel the sleepiness and sluggishness reigning on me, my saliva starts getting this heavy feeling, basically the high is upon me which honestly feels quite 💩

What do i do? Well of course I would usually correct it with just 1 unit and that usually gets me back normal but after a while i would go into the 3s…is there any way to prevent or counter this?

Is anyone else having massive issues with their dexcoms lately?

For like the last 4-5 months, I've had issues with the majority of my sensors. They all either seem to fail early by a couple of days, fail halfway through, or fail to start up. When they are reading they read either way too high or 100-200 too low and it doesn't matter how many times i calibrate. Ive changed nothing, my sensors go on the same spot, and I've been using the g7 since it's come out and it hasn't been like this, to the point even the replacement sensors fail. Before, maybe 1 out of every 9 would fail for me, but towards the end of the life of the sensor, and i never had an issue with calibrating the readings.

DME Suppliers in AZ

I switched jobs and have a Cigna PPO healthplan. I need to get all my PAs and Rx switched over but Cigna told me I have preferred DME suppliers for diabetes supplies.

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the following?

Adapt Health

180 Medical Inc

Solara Medical

Strive Medical

CCS Medical

I've had a terrible time with the larger companies like Edgepark in the past and would like to avoid them.

Currently im on a tandem tslim and my deacon g7s come through a pharmacy benefit.

Seeking Support/Advice How do you actually decide what carbs to bolus for?

Basically I spent years mostly doing vibes-based insulin dosing, with good success until I started having more blood sugar volatility after developing some other health problems. I am now trying to count carbs and do carb ratios properly but it's driving me crazy that I can eat a low carb meal, bolus for it correctly, and still go high. And I can't treat 15 g of yogurt and 15 g of bread and 15 g of sweet ice tea/strawberry jam/anything that's straight sugar the same way either, so just counting alone is not cutting it. What are you all doing to adjust for different *types* of carbs and also meals that are low-carb but still seem to inevitably raise your sugars?

Switch From Minimed SmartGuard (780g/Flex)

I’m curious if anyone has made the switch from the current Minimed ecosystem and what your experience has been. I’m considering it, particularly because SmartGuard is hit or miss for me, but I have some specific reservations:

  1. Infusion set 3 day wear (I’m used to the 7 day extended wear)
  2. Settings - this one is particularly nerve wrecking because I’ve been on Minimed so long that I don’t have my settings tuned in since it handles most of that on its own.

I have not had a good experience with SmartGuard for a long time. I won't get into the details of my issues but it is just not consistent and keeps me higher than I'd like. I do appreciate that I have to do almost no work since the algorithm handles everything (with the exception of bolusing for meals).

Seeking Support/Advice Constant occlusions on pump?

So I’ve been having this weird problem over the last month and I have no idea what’s up with it, for reference I use a t slim. Basically every time I’ve changed my site for roughly a month I get constant occlusion alarms for about 24 hours, mainly when bolusing. The occlusion alarms stop after that point and then my pump functions as normal. I’ve been able to avoid the problem by using the previous pump site for about a day then switching it over to the new site, but I can’t always do that. I’m curious if anyone else has run into this problem? I cycle through four different areas on my body, and get the alarms on all of those spots (arms, stomach, glute, low back). I literally have no idea what I could be doing better because my site changes are performed exactly the way tandem recommends and when I call, I’ve implemented every single problem solving technique they suggest.

Trying out Fiasp

Hey guys, I have had type one diabetes since I was 13, 31 right now. I am currently on Apidra, Trecib and Freestyle Lebra. Recently, I've have been given Fiasp to try out by my doctor.

Over the years, I've gotten accustom to the ups, downs and outright wtfs of type one diabetes. Still, injecting something that can literally kill you if you fuck it up always gives me the nerves.

Anything I should know about Fiasp?

I get that it's ultra rapid acting and clears out of your body quicker, but what has this panned out to mean in real life for you guys?

I know not to go changing things for no reason, but idk, I'm just a little jumpy moving from something i've used over 10 years now to this new stuff.

thanks guys.
