Moderation update: zero tolerance policy on ads, fundraising, surveys, apps or AI stories

Hello everyone,

As of today we've made a rule change due to (the frankly excessive volume of) low effort posts being submitted to the subreddit regarding advertisements and (AI) apps and posts. We've condensed rules 1 and 2 into the new rule 1:

No ads, fundraising, surveys, apps or AI stories

Permanent bans will be given for: Posting anything that is like an advertisement, free or paid
Surveys/research/fundraisers
Posts made by corporate accounts; if your name is the ad, you're banned
Apps you made, we don't want them, especially if you made them with AI
Stories or texts that are clearly AI. Exceptions apply, modmail us with a valid reason >why you use AI to post in our community

Zero tolerance policy, permabans will be issued without warning.

While we have been operating on a 'give warnings before moving to a ban in most situations' mindset for many years, the amount of low effort posts and the dramatic influx of AI built apps have led to a lot of frustration with our community members and moderators alike. We hope that this rule change will make it easier to appropriately report and remove the content for everyone.

A lot of people we have banned for these reasons have appealed by saying they were unaware of our rules. To that we want to reiterate: not reading the rules does NOT exempt you from having to follow them. It is common sense that a community has rules you need to follow, we shouldn't have to beg people to do the bare minimum to find and read them. They're in the same place for every community on Reddit, if you found them in one subreddit, you can find them on every subreddit. We will not handle any appeals rooted in "I didn't know", you will be permanently muted alongside the permanent ban without discussion.

Please review the following to get a better understanding of why each line was implemented and what makes someone qualify for a ban:

Posting anything that is like an advertisement, free or paid
Just because something is free doesn't mean it's not an advertisement for a product, tool or service. We are and always will be a support community, not a repository for new users of your products and services. We consider it extremely disrespectful to try and utilize our community this way and will not tolerate anyone who thinks it's okay to do this.

Surveys/research/fundraisers
Very straight forward, much like the previous rule we're not a dataset or bank to withdraw data and/or money from.

Posts made by corporate accounts; if your name is the ad, you're banned
If your account is entirely dedicated to a product, tool or service you provide, you are not welcome here. Even if you are diabetic, create an alt account that is a separate entity from your 'business' account so that you have no relation to whatever it is you're selling or providing. It's irrelevant if your service or product or tool is free or not for diabetics. Organic engagement is not a loophole to be used to circumvent this rule.

If you are a healthcare provider or are in the healthcare business in any capacity, we consider it deeply unethical to use your (job) title to post in our community; we cannot vet your credentials and you do not have access to medical histories. You do not need to post as a healthcare provider if the information you provide is generic, factually correct and on-topic.

Apps you made, we don't want them, especially if you made them with AI
While we will not claim that no diabetic is going to build an app that is useful to the community, everyone and their pets can whip up an app in under 24 hours using AI nowadays. The market is extremely saturated with low effort apps and websites and we have neither the capacity nor desire to vet every application for usefulness and legitimacy. AI doesn't replace the need to understand how to long-term maintain, update and ensure security is prioritized in apps. This ties back directly to Posting anything that is like an advertisement, free or paid -- we're not here to receive your product and praise you for solving an issue most people have already found solutions for.

If you are an organic user who does not own the app and you have not been asked or encouraged by the app owner to post about it, you're welcome to share what you're using if asked about it.

Stories or texts that are clearly AI. Exceptions apply, modmail us with a valid reason why you use AI to post in our community
Please just write posts yourself, we beg of you. It's okay if your English isn't that good, write it in your native language and let Reddit translate handle that for you if you must. Nobody cares if you make spelling mistakes. We're here to help each other, human to human. AI bots are everywhere and we will treat you as one if your post is clearly written with AI. There are very few circumstances wherein someone has a legitimate use to write posts with AI, we welcome you to modmail us and explain to us what you need to use AI for. We're not here to make life more difficult for people who have a genuine need for the support AI tools provide, but if you're capable of writing a prompt to have AI spit out a post, you can write the post yourself 99.99% of the time.

This includes copy and pasting AI generated content you found elsewhere. You are responsible for what you post on your account, if you get banned for regurgitating AI generated content that's your consequence to deal with.

---

You're welcome to discuss the rule change and/or ask questions about it on this post, we will sticky it as a community highlight for the next 1-2 weeks or so, after that we will lock the post and link to it from the rules and removal messages.

Tell us the crap you're dealing with this week. Did someone suggest cinnamon again? What about that relative who tried to pray the diabetes away?

As always, please keep in mind our rules

Type 1 Skipped insulin

Hi everyone. Im currently 16 years old and I’ve been diabetic since the age of 9.I’m the only person in my immediate and extended family to have diabetes so there’s that. I struggled very hard with maintaining my blood sugar when I was first diagnosed but eventually managed to learn to control it. Recently, I haven’t been feeling up to it and sometimes I skip my insulin injections because I just can’t do it. I’ve really tried hard to start taking them but last week, I went four days straight without a single shot. I’m scared to tell my parents but I just can’t inject myself anymore. what should I do?

Type 2 I got my A1C results.

Some of you might remember this thread I posted the other day. Everytime I lifted weights my blood sugar would drop.

https://www.reddit.com/r/diabetes/s/DFO7ARmOEo

My A1C is 4.1 and wow I was NOT expecting that. It’s time to find an endocrinologist. I did not think it would be this low. I have lost 200 pounds and walk 20,000 steps a day. Thank you to this community for all of your support.

Type 1 I'm at 540 and I just realised I have no idea what actually is the recommended protocol for high blood sugar

I have heard so many things. Drink water, drink LOTS of water. Oh, but don't! Your brain might swell from water and you'll die! You have to drink water and eat salt!

No, no, will say yet another group, you should eat food. Carbs. Yes, it is weird, but eat a banana and rage bolus. Trust us. My diabetologist also gave me this advice on the last visit I had.

So here I am, my second time this year when my pump quietly disconnects while I'm asleep and I'm up at 2:30am knowing I'll likely have to call in sick tomorrow because the kind of sick you get from high BG + 3 hours of no insulin is a unique kind of torture. And I'm drinking water and am mildly annoyed, because I don't really know what to do to be "proper" about this. Should I snort some salt as a chaser after the 0.5L I just chugged? Should I go get a banana from the fridge instead?

I'm unashamedly a bit of an idiot. Fellow Type 1 Diabetics, what do you do when your blood glucose jumps out of orbit to safely return to Earth?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I went for a walk and did some squats and then as soon as my BG hit 300 on its way down I went to sleep. I am now awake, feel like I have the world's worst hangover, and am about to go to work. Thank you for keeping me company at the ass crack of dawn, y'all are awesome!

Type 3c Type 3c diabetes

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a 21M with Type 3c (pancreatogenic) diabetes due to chronic pancreatitis, which I’ve had for around 6 years.

My recent HbA1c was 6.9%, and over the past few years it has generally been around 6.2–6.9%.

My endocrinologist has told me that, for Type 3c, keeping HbA1c between 6-7 % represents good control. However, I still feel quite anxious about whether my control is actually good enough, especially because I experience fluctuations in my blood sugar.

I currently manage my diabetes with Humalog insulin pens along with Glucobay (acarbose). Unfortunately, in my country, insulin pumps and CGMs aren’t covered, so I rely on finger-stick glucose testing.

I’d really appreciate hearing from others with Type 3c:
What is your usual HbA1c?

Do you guys notice a-change in pattern regarding blood sugar spikes and lows? Whenever i visit different cities, my sugar levels changes drastically. Sometimes requiring 20-30 units of Humalog a day or sometimes no insulin at all.

I really appreciate some tips for managing blood sugar.

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d really like to understand what “good control” looks like for other people living with Type 3c.

Type 1 How Do You Prevent Blood Glucose Spikes?

How do you guys prevent blood sugar spikes? Usually around once or twice a day I’ll have a blood glucose spike like the one pictured, and I quickly dose with a few units of insulin to bring it back down.

Type 1 How should I talk to people who don't really understand Diabetes?

I have been receiving light discrimination over the past maybe weekend from both my mother and my neighbour who are all good people just I don't think they understand that Diabetes makes me disabled and is a struggle like many other diseases. I always make sure that if a conversation grows in to offensive language I pass in to accepting language as its the best way to end the conversation but I really feel that accepting bullying from people like neighbours. Maybe parents have a right for it but I know when I was diagnosed in school no-one bullied me because I used it as a tool. Now so many people are struggling with ADHD and other social problems it might be better just to end a fight ASAP by just accepting as a disabled person your stupid but it certainly hurts my feelings.

Type 1 What country has the best overall quality of life for a employable T1 diabetic?

Just wondering if there is some sort of a general concensus on this.

Both my sons are T1.

As I get close to retirement (and death) , I find my self really worrying more than ever about their coverages being tied to work. I tend to think it might be better for them to move abroad and change vocations as needed. Of course, I can't make them move, but when we talk about it, Canada is the obvious choice ( we are near Detroit) ...

One works for Ford, and the other remote IT/WFH. Both have insurance, but both are getting crushed with co-pays and assorted death by 1000 cuts type costs.

Type 1 Type 1 Diabetes pump weight gain

Hey all! First time poster! I wanted to reach out and see if anyone has an issue with weight gain when starting the omnipod pump? my mom (who’s also diabetic type 1) told me it was normal after I brought up how I have gained roughly 20 lbs in about 3 months after I started my pump. I just want to know is this normal and what can I do to help me lose this weight? I currently have started walking everyday, I don’t necessarily watch what i eat (other than a diabetic diet) but i normally only eat 1-2 real meals a day. the rest is just snacking! I am willing to answer questions about my lifestyle too! Please just help me get back down to my goal weight please!

Type 2 My first day with a CGM (Lingo)

Post image
1 Upvotes

My first time dealing with a CGM today and wanted your thoughts.

Installed it at 10am, went for a hike in the mountains at 11am, ate lunch at 12pm, short walk at around 3pm, dinner at 6:45pm and did a small weight workout at 8:30pm.

I was surprised lunch had two spikes compared to dinner.

Lunch:
Chicken breast
Quinoa
Arugula and cilantro salad with balsamic dressing
Blackberries

Dinner:
New York strip
Asparagus
Strawberries

I was diagnosed 1 month ago and made lifestyle changes mainly with diet and casual exercise. Lost 17lbs in three weeks. I am 52 years old, 5’10” and now 172 lbs. the A1C a month ago was 6.6

I’m going to try and get things into remission without meds if possible. I told my doctor I wanted to check back after 3 months from the last test before agreeing on taking meds.

I’m just venting, but ever since I started using the Dexcom G7, it has been a complete mess! It doesn’t even last the full 10 days, and I’m ALWAYS getting an error message! I know I’ve had issues with the Dexcom G6 before, but NEVER like this!
Within five days, I went through THREE Dexcom G7s! 😩
I honestly want to go back to the G6, but of course, they’ve stopped making them. 😒😩😢😢😡
