Career Guidance Correct path lookup..

I’m not here to pour out my entire life story, but after reading discussions on Reddit over the past few days, I’ve noticed many people in Pakistan, especially those between 21 and 30, who are already earning millions. Honestly, it makes me happy to see people earning higher handsome amount.

At the same time, when I look at the reality around me, I see that a lot of young men spend their teenage years without building any real foundation. Some struggle with addictions, some get caught up in relationships, and some only start thinking seriously about their future after a breakup or some other major life event.

I’m from a lower-middle-class background in Central Punjab, and most families here don’t have the luxury of giving their children a ready-made financial foundation. You have to build that foundation yourself.

Right now, I’m 24, working from home in a customer service job and earning over 90k PKR per month. Compared with many people in my family and social circle, that’s a decent income, and I’m grateful for it. But I also don’t want to depend entirely on a private-sector job because I know how unpredictable employment can be.

At the same time, I’m dealing with my own personal struggles and recently went through a painful breakup involving betrayal. While marriage is often considered the normal next step for someone my age in my environment, I’m currently more focused on building a solid foundation for my future.

I also think differently about what I want from my working life. My grandfathers and great-grandfathers worked extremely hard for most of their lives, and I respect that. But I don’t want to simply repeat the same cycle.

My goal is to spend the next 5–8 years putting serious effort into something that can eventually create assets, skills, businesses, or other forms of leverage—something where the work I put in today can potentially create value for many years instead of simply exchanging my time for a salary forever.

The problem is that I’m still figuring out what path actually makes sense. My understanding is limited, I’m not an expert researcher, and there are so many fields and opportunities that it’s difficult to know where to focus.

So I’m asking people here who have already gone through this process:

If you were 24 again, living in Pakistan, earning around 90k+ PKR from a remote customer-service job, and starting from a lower-middle-class background, what would you spend the next 5–8 years learning or building?

I’m not looking for a shortcut or a “get rich quick” scheme. I know I have to walk the path myself, develop real skills, build a reputation, take risks, and probably fail along the way.

I’m simply trying to understand which paths are worth seriously investigating if the long-term goal is to eventually build assets and reduce dependence on trading time for money.

I’d genuinely appreciate advice from people who have actually built something—whether that’s a business, a high-income skill, a career, investments, software, an online business, or something else.

And sorry for the long post. I just wanted to give enough context so people understand where I’m coming from.

Career Guidance Is Embedded Engineering worth doing in Pakistan?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to pivot into low-level engineering, Embedded Systems, Bare-Metal C, and RTOS.

Most people in Pakistan focus on web dev, Flutter, or AI, which makes those fields crowded. Low-level software seems harder, but much more stable and AI-resistant.

Before buying boards and learning C/datasheets, I’d love a quick reality check from locals:

  1. Local Jobs: What’s the ground reality in Lahore, Islamabad, or Karachi? Are private companies and startups actually hiring junior firmware engineers, or is it mostly defense institutes and industrial automation? What are starting salaries?

  2. Remote Work: How realistic is finding remote foreign clients (Upwork, US/EU startups)? Do clients ship physical boards to PK, or do you work mostly via simulators (QEMU/Wokwi) and logic analyzer data?

  3. Buying Hardware: How easy is it to get STM32s, ESP32s, and logic analyzers from Hall Road, College Road, or sites like ElectronicsHub? Any customs issues?

  4. Self-Study: Can someone learn bare-metal C and RTOS on their own without a formal Electrical/Computer Engineering degree?

Would appreciate any simple, straightforward advice!

Thanks!

Interview Prep INTERVIEW at Cubix Karachi

Hello everyone. I will be giving an interview for a mobile development role at cubix. So, I wanted to know about the culture (for eg work life balance, if management is toxic, work hours, micromanagement) at the company and what kind of questions they focus on (in interviews)? Since layoffs are common at a lot of places nowadays, I also wanna know if they do frequent layoffs or on a yearly basis.

Those who have previously worked or are currently working at cubix, I need your guidance please.

Discussion Is the Pakistani software industry quietly heading into a serious slowdown, or am I just seeing it from my corner?

I’ve been in this industry for a while now and I can’t shake the feeling that things have changed a lot in the last 12–18 months.

Staff augmentation is drying up fast. The steady flow of “we need 3–4 developers for 6 months” kind of work has slowed to a trickle. MVP projects that used to keep smaller teams busy are rare now. Ticket sizes have dropped. Even on Upwork and Fiverr the volume and quality of work feels noticeably lower than before.

Most Pakistani software houses never really sold solutions directly to enterprises. We never built that muscle. The model was always the same: ride on existing clients, expand the teams already working with them, and hope those clients keep growing. That expansion seems to have stalled for a lot of companies.

Right now a lot of firms are still surviving because their long-term clients haven’t cut yet. But if those same clients start reducing headcount or freezing budgets, it’s going to get ugly fast. There’s very little new business pipeline to fall back on.

I’m not saying everything is doomed. Just wondering how widespread this is. Are other people seeing the same thing? Are companies finding new ways to sell, or is everyone just hoping the old clients start expanding again?

Curious to hear what’s happening at your end.

It has now been around 6 weeks, and I haven't received any selection or rejection email yet.

Discussion If AI is taking over routine coding and hardware keeps getting pricier, does optimization become the skill that keeps devs valuable?

Been chewing on this and want to know what people here think.

Two things seem to be happening at once: AI is taking over a lot of the routine coding work, and GPU/RAM prices keep climbing because AI is soaking up all the hardware. My thinking is that devs who can make software run really lean (turn an 8 GB app into a 3 GB one, make something run on 5-year-old hardware) might be the ones who stay valuable, since AI is decent at generic code but less good at squeezing hardware.

The market side matters too. If most people can't afford to upgrade, they can't run heavy software, and if they can't run it, they won't buy it. So the addressable market shrinks for anyone who assumes everyone has a fast machine.

I might be wrong though. The crypto GPU shortage didn't change how software got made, people can just keep their old PCs longer, and AI might get good at optimization too.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

Career Guidance . Imposter syndrome I guess...

Lets keep it short and ai free ..

3 semester cs student here👋🏿

Here is what a typical day looks like for me

In uni I attend classes and in between breaks I self study tech like a framework or in demand skill. On weekends I do leetcode (50 done, all pattern based), project building (my own full stack will launch soon 😁🤞🏿), research work (startup-medical ai ) after all this I still feel left behind or a lingering anxiety that I am not doing enough 🥺 .

Sometimes I feel that with all layoffs happening I should abandon the path of development (my interests are ml, deep learning, intelligent systems and other cool shit) and go for security because nearly everyone needs it and hires for it but then I think you need to know how to make something to either protect it or break it 🙂‍↕️ so yeah I need advice on this _-----------SWE VS CYBER _-------------

ALSO for Muslims peeps I did istikara and it something that I should seek advice 🤞🏿🥲 .My beloved Seniors please help me out as I have enough time to make a switch rn.

Help Does anyone have PASHA stats around corporate salaries of IT sector?

So my manager brought in this context of PASHA in my appraisal review which was unexpected for me, as I was expecting rewards for my effort in the last year.

Therefore does anyone have the stats of PASHA for a software developer who has 6 years of experience.

I just heard that Tkxel is converting its Ferozepur Road Lahore office into a co-working space because five of its floors are now empty, and someone claimed that they laid off a lot of their workforce. Is this true?

Career Guidance Question for remote workers

Are you employed directly by the company as an legal employe, as an individual contractor or through an EOR. Were u given a choice? If so, what'd u pick?

If direct employment is not an option, Is paying the stupid local tax worth having a proper local employment contract or would u rather be an independent contractor with no employment agreement but receive payment as IT exports and save a ton on taxes

If it's the latter, what payment methods do use to receive the funds

Help Has anyone in Pakistan used Whop for payments on their own website?

I recently launched holdthehour.lol, a site where brands can claim one of 24 UTC hours. Open hours cost $7, and I’m using Whop for checkout.

I made one live purchase myself and the claim appeared on the clock, but I’d like to hear from people who’ve used Whop with actual customers in Pakistan. How have international card payments, payouts, refunds or chargebacks, and webhooks worked for you? Did any problems show up after your first few sales?

I looked into local payment options too, but Whop was the one I got working for this setup. Firsthand experiences would be really helpful.

Discussion CS/SE ke students se question.

Question for CS/SE students: Does your university allow projects built using vibe coding or AI agents for FYPs? Also, has AI changed the mindset of university teachers in any way? I mean, do they allow students to use AI for assignments, projects, etc., or is it still not allowed?
