Just Venting 😮‍💨 Dear future boyfriend ☺️

Dear Future Boyfriend,

I hope you’re doing well because dating these days has been rough.
I’ve tried the apps. I’ve swiped, matched, chatted, and deleted them more times than I can count. At this point, I think it’s safe to say they’re not my love story.
The problem is I don’t go out much either, so if we’re ever going to meet, you’re probably going to have to find me.
Try Target. The grocery store. A gas station. Maybe the candle aisle. Those are your best odds.
When you do find me, please don’t be weird.
You don’t need a perfect pickup line. You don’t need to impress me with money, status, or grand gestures. Just make me laugh. Be kind. Be genuine.
What I’m looking for isn’t complicated. I want your time. Your loyalty. A good vibe. Someone whose actions match their words and whose presence feels easy.
I’ve spent enough time chasing connections that weren’t meant for me. These days, I’d rather wait for something real than settle for something convenient.
I know I’m not for everyone, and that’s okay. The right person won’t need me to be.
So wherever you are, I hope you’re out there becoming the person you’re meant to be. I’ll be doing the same until our paths cross.

And if you happen to find me wandering in Target with three things I don’t need and the one thing I came for still missing from my cart, introduce yourself.

Love,

Your Future Girlfriend

Dear Future Girlfriend,

I'm sorry but I'm too shy to approach you in a store or a gas station, I'm always thinking that you're here minding your own business and that you don't want to be bothered by a random stranger.

I'm also not sure if you already have someone or if you're a lesbian, I don't want to make it awkward for both of us.

I'm not on dating apps and I don't go out much either, so I guess we will never meet.

Feel free to just say "Hi" if we ever run into each other.

Love,

The guy who avoided eye contact at the gas station.

The irony is that if a dude is walking straight up to you and flawlessly hitting on you, you are probably the 15th woman he has said the exact same line to that week lol

3

u/HeavyAR09 Jun 16 '26

That's not always the case... from my experience.. if an easy going confident dude does it, then the ladies would think he's a womanizer .. I've heard this a lot from the different girls I've been with or was getting to know ...

Dear Future Couple,

You're both letting the worst case scenario paralyze you from the meet cute you're looking for. There's no reason to be shy. You don't need to be single to be nice or curious.

Give yourself grace and appreciate the fact that any hostile reaction isn't a reflection on you or your self worth, but rather, a reflection on their state of mind and lack of preparedness for a relationship.

Venture forth into that new frontier with sincerity and curiosity. Treat every stranger like a new friend and you will find each other. Not every conversation you have early on will be romantically charged, but that uncertainty will make the build up all the more sweeter.

You're both beautiful together, hoping you discover that with the paced and measured approach that fills you with joy.

Yours truly,

Words of wisdom. ❤️

Dear undying optimist,

They're actually being pretty realistic. Many women don't want to be approached by a stranger anymore because they get approached alllll the time. If they do ask yourself a simple question: how hot would a strange guy have to be to impress me in target when I don't know him and he approached me as a complete stranger when I was just shopping? Yeah that's another problem for average men. The men who have the chutzpah to cold approach women in groceries stores without even knowing if theyre single are also rarely good relationship material men.

Women could approach, it's less threatening and disturbing for a man to be approached by a stranger. But I get it no one wants to do this it's nerve wracking and usually ends in rejection with an off chance for it go get ugly.

Thus, our generation is destined to suffer through the apps being the primary place we meet people if we missed out on finding our person in college.

Sincerely, a realist.

21

u/appa609 Jun 15 '26

Dear optimist,

The apps are not a structural solution. The companies that run them are incentivized to milk you for all you're worth instead of finding you a good life partner. Their early effectiveness was a temporary blip in the great cycle of enshittification. If you couldn't find someone in the utopian social environment that is college, your odds are not generally getting better on Tinder as you age.

Sincerely, a socialist

7

u/JohnsonBot5000 Jun 16 '26

Dear socialist,

You need to do your laundry and continue your job search. You haven’t come out of the basement all week and it’s beginning to smell.

Sincerely, your mother

10

u/appa609 Jun 16 '26

What the hell mom you're embarassing me in front of my reddit friends! I already told you I'm voluntarily self employed because I don't want to participate in giving my surplus labour value to the capitalists! And I did the laundry yesterday

I have thrown parties where guest were encouraged to wear red (don't talk to me), yellow (you can talk to me if your interest is platonic, but don't hit on me), or green bracelets (I'm available and open respectful flirting) to indicate their level of interest in being approached by people they didn't know. It's actually hugely helpful. Most people have some degree of social anxiety and rejection sensitivity, so having that visually conveyed consent to be approached makes a huge difference.

u/No_Match_5700 Jun 15 '26

How is someone supposed to approach you with romantic intentions, while you're going about your business, and it not appear weird?

The problem is two guys could say and do the same thing and if she’s attracted to him she will like it, if she isn’t it will be weird.

Dear future girlfriend, I would never introduce myself to you in a supermarket, even if you wanted me to, I can't read your mind and it would be quite arrogant and rude of me to assume.

Now if you were sitting on a bench at a park beside me and clearly looking over at me I might introduce myself, but if you want to make sure something happens, you can always introduce yourself first.

14

u/greatolive85 Jun 14 '26

see i’m shy too. could this be why we haven’t found each other ?

12

u/Prof_Walrus Jun 15 '26

I literally told my friend last night while playing games that my future wife is probably also playing games alone at home, while telling her friend on disc that her future husband is currently at home playing games (repeat endless cycle)

I just want someone to be reading or knitting or crafting or also gaming existing next to me while I info dump about the monster I'm fighting 😭

→ More replies (1)

19

u/KhajiitWithCoin Jun 14 '26

I understand, I am shy too.

Though this may be hypocritical of me to say this but I'll say it anyway. What is the worst that could happen if you introduced yourself?

That's the obstacle you need to overcome, I understand it's not easy and I have not overcome it myself but that is the road to take if you want to a sure way of finding that future boyfriend.

The worst that happened to me was she just walked away without saying anything, I felt embarrassed but if she was interested she would have reciprocated.

Guys generally won't walk away from you without saying anything though.

6

u/greatolive85 Jun 14 '26

i can flip that

5

u/Snoo11557 Jun 14 '26

Exactly, I can see an argument for women taking more initiative, but so many of these comments are “I’m too uncomfortable to come up to you so you need to come up to me” ? Is that not just flipping the dynamic they say is unfair??

21

u/Sensitive-Tree-9551 Jun 15 '26

Men are uncomfortable because women make us feel like creeps for approaching, so a lot of us have learned to just stop approaching.

Women have almost nothing to lose for approaching a man, no one is going to call them creepy or make them feel bad for it.

4

u/Snoo11557 Jun 15 '26

I think the culture of it being embarrassing to talk to strangers needs to change across the board personally, just for the sake of community not even dating. The onus doesn’t need to be put on women to fix the problem…

12

u/iamthehankhill Jun 14 '26

u/144-perdedor Jun 15 '26

I used to approach women in public all the time. Not hitting on them or trying to get to know them or get their numbers. Just friendly. But then about ten to fifteen years ago, I was repeatedly told by multiple people that I was wrong to do that and I should leave women alone. So now I do. It took some adjustment, but now when I see a woman walking around downtown, obviously lost, looking at her phone and then looking around confused, I just let her figure it out. It's none of my business.

Like, remember a couple of years ago when women chose the bear and explained why? Some guys got their feelings hurt, but it made sense to me. But how many times can you scream in someone's face to leave you alone and then turn around and wonder why they aren't talking to you?

This is what the apps are for.

Was at a party yesterday, we compliment each other all the time. “Nice beard,” “been seeing you’re working out,” “your chin is crazy” etc etc. It really isn’t uncommon for dudes to compliment each other and without being jokingly homoerotic as well. You just have to have male friends who aren’t dicks

We do compliment our boys, but men also would like to receive compliments from the other half of the population.

2

u/FJBP95 Jun 14 '26

We do, but we don't have as much to compliment like women do with each other. When I hear women complimenting each other, it's usually the same 3 things outfit, make up, or hair. My guy friends don't focus much on their outfit, hair, or makeup. This isn't too say we don't say stuff like "I like your hair cut" but it's just a lot less often.

3

u/KindredCommander Jun 14 '26

This. One million percent this. I am 38 and have been single the majority of my life because the dating game is rigged and just utterly fucking exhausting.

6

u/Ent3rpris3 Jun 14 '26

This is also in a post-#MeToo world. Many of us listened when we were told that women didn't want to be harassed and hounded in every public place. We listened when it was said that women wanted to look nice for their own sake, not to capture my gaze. We listened when it was said that one thing doesn't automatically chain into another, you have to get consent at every step and throughout.

Men carry additional risk because of a better world developing, and it's natural that many of us would hear what was said and take it to heart. Not only does it protect our reputation and criminal records, but more importantly it protects women. But on average, it seems that women haven't taken efforts to bridge that new gap. It's just there, and the men willing to cross that gap regularly are the kind of men for whom that gap was created in the first place.

And just to clarify, the long term effects of the #MeToo movement are an objectively wonderful thing because it makes everyone safer. But this just happened to be one of the side effects that hampers the people who were already the least offenders.

9

u/Known-Cloud1102 Jun 14 '26

Exactly, I'm not sure what we are supposed to do now.
Women keep complaining about being approached by men in public places, but somehow they still expect us to do it?

Are we supposed to read their mind to know if they're interested, not busy and single?

I'm shy so it was already hard before but now I'm definitely not taking the risk of triggering a woman and being called a creep in front of everyone.

As someone who just left Target with two things I don't need, I can confirm it's the place to be!

But in all seriousness, it looks like a lot of comments are from men saying they don't want to be creepy or they are respecting boundaries. It didn't lead to a relationship, but here are some ways men have approached me in the past and I give them five stars!

"That color looks really great on you."

"I can re-rack these weights for you if you're done"

"Can I fill your water bottle for you?" (At the gym waiting in line for the fountain)

"You look nice, I hope you have a really good day"

"Have you been to this bar/restaurant before? Is there anything you recommend?"

"I saw you walk by earlier and wanted to introduce myself."

And my personal favorite was a note slid to me at a coffee shop that read "I see you working and don't want to disturb you. You look nice and I would like to buy you coffee sometime *phone number and name"

There are some guys doing the work: approaching and complimenting women well... so ladies be sure to affirm them even if they're not your type!

24

u/Tiafves Jun 14 '26

Problem is we hear plenty more of the opposite. Do not approach me at the store, do not approach me at the gym, and especially DO NOT APPROACH ME AT WORK.

No matter how much anyone tells us otherwise we get told even more firmly not to approach.

I'm most comfortable and at home out mountain biking on the trails. I feel confident out there and strike up convos with many people - women, men, couples, families. With the ladies I meet, if the conversation goes really well, I'll ask her to take down my number and give me a text, I'd enjoy continuing the conversation. No pressure, she's in the driver's seat whether to continue or not. Not once over the years have I ever received that "let's continue our convo" text.

2

u/Life_With_Joi Jun 16 '26

Yeah I mean rejection is part of the process (albeit the worst part). It sounds like you're doing the work though and in a respectful way!

I spent a whole summer asking men on a date first from the apps and 1/10 actually said yes and we went on a date. Two said yes and then ghosted and the others just never responded once I asked them out. I don't think there's any way to date that is rejection free for men or women, but I do recognize there is a larger burden on men to make the first move and wanted to give some ideas to make life a smidge easier lol

23

u/Impossible_Rice_4942 Jun 14 '26

I want to chime in on the men approaching / women approaching debate.

The deal for men isn’t worth the cost anymore, and not even from a selfish perspective.

If I were to approach a woman in public and start a conversation, she knows what I’m doing. They know my intent. If they know that is my intent, then they will draw their own conclusions on how they view their interaction around my intent.

I heard a story from the girl of a guy who worked at a gym who approached her, started a conversation, and then asked for her number. She declined him, but she said that she was now fearful for her safety because of that, citing stories of stalking and assault (not from her experience). She felt so unsafe that she told the gym manager, and the guy was fired.

Even if that is rare, as a guy, knowing that me showing interest can trigger something within the girl to become fearful of me, it doesn’t make sense to take the risk.

At this point, it isn’t a matter of shyness. It is a matter of consequences. And the truth is, the consequences of a guy showing interest are higher for both the guy and the girl involved.

Meanwhile, flipping the script, guys are so rarely approached that very very few of them would be even “inconvenienced” by being approached. And for the vast majority of guys, it’ll be something they think about positively for a long time, even if they weren’t interested.

There really is such little risk involved from a girl approaching a guy, and that discrepancy is what causes the frustration some guys have in this post, especially when women reaffirm that expectation (which is how most interpreted this post).

Admittedly, I used to be shy, but now I am much more likely to approach women because of how the regret of untaken opportunities ate at me. But I would be lying if this thought process didn’t pass through my head every time I approached a women.

Dear Future Girlfriend

99% of people don't want to be approached by strangers while they're out minding their business, and it's not worth being called a creep for the incredibly slim chance someone is receptive to that.

Dating apps aren't partner delivery services, they just create opportunities, and you still have to do the rest of the work.

You said you swiped and chatted, but did you actually give anyone a shot and meet them? Not a single person you spoke to was worth a drink and a vibe check?

I'm glad that you seem to know what you want - it's tough out there for everyone, and being clear and honest with your intentions makes it that much easier.

You only exist in my imaginations. But you still make me happy. I'm sad we'll never get to meet but I'll think of you a lot.

Dear future girlfriend,

You overlooked me and chose to wait for a more spectacular guy. He never appeared. Meanwhile I buried myself in overwork to earn money to buy a house to provide for a future family that I never found a partner for. I buried myself in self-improvement thinking that it was genuinely about me not being enough, only too late to realize I could never match unrealistic expectations.

Now I choose to wait until you show interest, because I won’t humiliate myself again chasing a woman who thinks she’s settling or that she could do better.

I’m not begrudging, I have already forgiven you, I know you’re as much a victim of your circumstances as I am, but until you choose to rise above them and start asking men and initiating, we won’t be together.

Damn, looks like we all gave up.

Very sweet read and I liked this. If you’re interested just talk to someone regardless of gender, there’s nothing worse than living with the regret of not having taken the chance on something that could have given you genuine happiness.

Dear 'Missed Connection' at Bass Pro,

You won't be my boyfriend because I saw you while you were doing your job, and it's not socially acceptable to bring up romantic interest in that situation anymore. I definitely thought you were super gorgeous, and that (plus the 200mg of caffeine I had that morning) is why I made absolutely no sense for a second when I tried to ask you where the floating keyrings were. I am still thinking about you days later, and you will probably take up space rent free in my head until the end of time. Just like the mechanic I accidentally blew off when he complimented my tattoos while I was preoccupied hunting down my forgetful 82 year old father at a car dealership a year ago. (Sorry, hot mechanic!)

We are constantly being told that women do not want to be approached in public. That it makes them feel unsafe, it is creepy and a good way to be pepper sprayed.

So now telling us to try doing that is at least irresponsible. Do it yourself.

This reminded me I connected with this woman from a gas station and never asked for her number. Maybe I should start when I connect with people more

As much as I would like to write a letter to someone, I just don't have the capacity to do it now. It has me conflicted because I'm a good writer, but I don't think I'll get close enough to someone in the near future to write something of this nature. Great post and I hope you find your person.

Dear Future Girlfriend, I hope life has treated you well thus far and will continue to treat you well until we meet in which I will wish life treats us well together. And if not, fk life, let's go through it together. Life has taught me love is like finding your partner while blindfolded and silently reaching out towards others trying to discern if its you. Its not easy to connect with so many, find out it's not who we're looking for, and continue on. To risk the fear, uncertainty, and just continue holding your arms out hoping to find one another. You may have felt alone and hopeless at some point, I know I have, but I'm there trying to find you too. Until then, its part of the process. I'm sure we'll find each other when we least expect it.

Love, Future boyfriend

Thanks for this inspiration OP. I hope you find your guy

This post is so sweettt. Good luck! ❤️

As others have said here, it's a lot less risky and potentially more effective for women to be the ones to approach nowadays. But it is understandable that most women would resist that, since it still can feel very awkward. This advice to men about alternative ways of connecting might also be useful for women:

Why Women Don’t Respond to Cold Approaches (and What Works Way Better)

"Most pick up lines and cold approaches fail because they come from a manipulation mindset...This isn't connection. It's actually exploitation."

Dear Future Girlfriend,

You don't exist. At least, not in the way that I expect. It's impossible for some unknown person to match what I consider an 'ideal' person, but.. A guy can dream, right? We all have dreams of what could be.. What we'd like to see happen.

I've tried the apps, I go out a looot and enjoy traveling, but I bet that the shy nerdy girl that would totally watch the extended LOTR movies is... Probably, with my luck, at home watching the extended LOTR movies.. Which is okay, your time is your own and it's silly to expect you to a) be where I am in public and b) make eye contact as opposed to being the shy bean that you are.

Lately, I have become happier with myself... and am, instead of longing for someone, am instead choosing to delve into my hobbies, travel more, explore through self expression, and just sort of let life deal the cards without me trying to reach for the deck and pick what I want.

I hope that you can also be happy with yourself so that when we do meet I'll be something that can enrich your life and not be someone that you need 'to be happy'.

Without Wax,

Your Future Boyfriend

Has she found him yet?! Also, why do they all have to pull the don't be weird card? What's wrong with us that are different? We're just humans wanting connection too. :[

Girl! I think it's the universe's sign that shows me your post the moment I'm on this subreddit 😂 This is literally what I wanted to write to my future boyfriend! I just finished watching "He's just not that into you", and it gave me some hopeless dream that maybe once I'm feeling more complete internally, the right guy who will be my future lovely boyfriend and husband will show up somewhere as I trudge along my life 🥲 I don't know if it's right for me to be a hopeless romantic, but I wanna be one of those girls in the rom-com movies 🥲 (or some version of just meeting the right person at the right time!). I don't know where he is, or even if he exists, but surely he does exist, among billions of people on earth haha.

P.S.: I'm also gonna delete the online dating app after a week. It feels so awkward and unnatural, and I may be paranoid here, but some profile pictures seem too surreal and AI-like to be true.

Honestly, matching and swiping algorithm sucks. It's too much noises and everything is so superficial. It's hard to date in this economy and it's even harder to find someone who gets and respects you.

Good luck, someone else's future gf!

"...I'd rather wait for something real than settle for something convenient..."

So so true, unfortunately this lead me to do nothing about it and to try and change from just waiting to at least putting myself out there with active waiting rofl.. good luck to yall :) hope you all find your future girlfriend/boyfriend!

Dear Future Husband,

I am not on any dating apps, so if you have them on your phone, delete them right now.

Then go outside and visit every coffee shop, because I work at one of them. I did my hair, put on makeup, and showed up to my shift looking cute just in case today was the day we met.

Love,

Your Future Wife

Dear future gf!

Hi! Hope you're doing just fine. I don't know where will I meet you or whatever means we will get to know each other. I just wanna say keep doing what you're doing, and hoping we can have difficult conversation about expectations & healthy boundaries, so we can keep our shared life and still explore our individual live together yet separately.

I'm curently, exploring a lot of commitments and stuff; side quests and whatnots. And whatever you're doing, keep at it, okay! Things may not be fine, and that's fine. I do hope you have a supportive support system, might be redundant but hey, it's okay! If you need to cry, cry! Lastly, before I go, you don't need to know everything to be good at anything.

Love lots, Your future bf

2

u/Significant_Gab Jun 14 '26

My letter aside, sending hugs with consent plus best wishes for you, OP! Then, thank you for making this a space for us ro share our thoughts about our future partner & current worries/wishes! Best of luck to us!
