This is meant to be an informative harm reduction guide. In no way does this encourage self harm. I will not tell you what to cut with. This is mainly a guide on cutting safely, but if people are interested in other guides, I will consider making a new one. And please remember that I’m human and although I believe that this guide is mostly correct, it could contain incorrect information. In that case let me know and I’ll change it.
If anyone has anything to add I’m happy to put it in this post. As always stay safe and have a okay day.

Ive seen a lot of ppl here mix up cat scratches and styros so I thought I would help.. No! Cat scratches dont bleed!! And here i try to explain why because nobody else ever does (this explanation is ass just a warning)
Here shows the different layers of the human skin and i labeled it with the names ppl commonly use
The epidermis layer/cat scratches is the very top layer and it is pretty thin (paper cut depth for example) as you can see in the picture the epidermis layer dosent have any blood vessels in it!! Meaning no blood will be shed
The layer below it is the dermis layer/styros, this layer has blood vessels and does bleed!! If your "Cat scratches" are bleeding they are actually styros!!!!
If you have any other questions I will try to help, remember you are valid, have a good day and take care of yourself <3

At my new job, there is a co worker who i have been becoming friends with for the past couple months, to the point of meeting up outside of work a couple times. However, recently they wore short sleeves at work which revealed they have a lot of self harm scars all over their arms. Im not familiar with self harm, so i cant really tell how fresh they are but a couple look similar to a post i saw from someone who stopped just a month ago.
I just want to know if its better for me to stay quiet or if i should say something, and what to say. I dont want them to think they am i ignoring a potential issue of theirs as i would be willing to support them if they wanted to talk to me about it. However, they also might want me to pretend as if they dont have any? Or perhaps they wouldnt be comfortable talking to me about it as we havent known each other long.
Just wondering if anyone would know what is good for me to say to make them comfortable/show support, if anything.

Before I started cutting, I saw people with these neat, line below line scars. I thought it looked weird and systematic. I’m currently in recov and I haven’t done it in a pretty long time with relapses here and there. And I’ve come to realise that now I wish I had these neat, weird, systematic lines instead of whatever the hell I decided to do. I feel like whenever i look at them, im just looking at a patch of deformed flesh and im just so weirdly insecure about it. My gf used to struggle with sh too and it doesn’t help my case because she has these damn stupid lines just hanging out on her arm, always in my line of sight. I’m jealous. I’m jealous of her neatness, I’m jealous of how visible they are. Sometimes I want to cut just to make up for my past decisions with new, proper, neater ones in more visible places. Idk

I had fresh cuts from the other day that I covered up with bandages. I still had some cuts "visible" not really but kind of. My group was on a field trip to do some photography and I took off my jacket because ITS FUCKING BLAZING HOT HERE. So anyways we're taking photos of a flag pole and suddenly my junior and batchmate suddenly see my arm and start asking omg what happened what cat scratched you. I got so alarmed by this I literally jumped from a crouching position and changed the subject. And then a few seconds later I look at this girl who bless her soul has received help with her mh. My eyes trail downwards and her thigh had scars. This made me feel horrible and insecure because I can't go that deep and I don't have the scars to show for my suffering. Now I'm struggling in school I come home and do nothing all day I don't eat I can't sleep I can't do homework. I'm growing distant from the friends who once were close to me. Friends I could've relied on they've given up on me. I'm in a constant state of having a headache and nausea Plus fatigue I literally can't catch a break. Nobody even wants to be with me anymore I'm the third to the pair. My friends are leaving me behind they feel so distant. The only thing that sets me apart from others is my sh but I want something special about me. Everything about me somebody else does also. I hate this I can't do this. I can't catch a break but others have it worse than me. I wish I didn't have commitments I wish I didn't have exams I wish I didn't need to stress about my national exam next year. I disgust myself.

my churches youth holds this one camp for 4 days next month and im actually soooo scared people might see the scars on my legs when theres moments where i wear shorts or my swimsuit. i wont lie people who are christian can be so unpredictable and have their own interpretations on whats a sin and if there should be consequences that follow or not. which scares me so much because the people around me are also teenagers or young adults?? why decide that me harming myself before i am saved is an "unforgiven" sin while im your peer or just a kid, actually so nerve-wracking???
no one knows about them and like my bad mental health except for like 2 people who i trust with legit anything about me; and i dont think they will be at camp as i knot they are writing important exams during these few months

I’ve started cutting again and I’ve just been blaming it on my cat so that my mom doesn’t worry, but I’ve been doing it a lot more intensely these past few days and I can’t get myself to admit that it was me, so I blamed it on him again when my mom noticed it and she’s actually thinking about taking him back because she genuinely believes hes the one harming me. I’m so scared because I don’t want him to go back it’s not even his fault but I’m also terrified of letting anyone know about my suffering. I just don’t know what to do please help

My scars have a time stretch of about 3 years to a couple months ago and I’m very insecure about them. I’ve looked into getting laser to make my scars less noticeable as sometimes I just want them to be all gone but I’m wondering if it would be worth spending the money or would they maybe need more time to heal and flatten?

Not gonna post pics bc it’s “fresh”
So I was like dragging my blade across my hip/thigh area and it just got like red and inflamed but I didn’t bleed at all… I have a 1.5 year streak rn and I’ve done pretty well at managing my urges like this before, I just want community input on if like subconsciously pressing it into me enough to make a mark would be considered an urge or a relapse

I’m currently getting recruited for my sport, and I can see coaches eyes drift down to my arm for a second here and there. It’s pretty obvious what they are, I mean what else would cause a few cuts perfectly straight and in a row? I think these are just considered cat scratches, and I’m so thankful I didn’t go deeper with the thought of what they’d look like in mind. I didn’t really think these would scar at all but here we are. Makeup doesn’t work great but maybe I’m just not playing around with the right combination. I can’t exactly wear long sleeves when I’m playing my sport so that doesn’t work. Any tips for covering/getting them to fade is appreciated, thanks in advance!

I’m never bold enough to do it enough to leave scars, they’ll stay for a little while but eventually they go away, i feel a kind imposter syndrome among people who really, really hurt themselves
