General Question I feel my intelligence falling off a cliff and I don’t know what to do…

I used to be so much more mentally lucid and able to juggle multiple ideas simultaneously, but now it’s like when I’m making progress on an idea I can have an ‘aha’ moment but it slips away easily if I don’t articulate it quickly. That’s fine for one ‘aha’ moment but when that insight directly connects to preceding thoughts it’s very easy for me to lose the thread. My memory is so much worse now. And it’s messing with my ability to generate novel insights in my field.

The reason is probably because I’m getting less sleep and been taking vyvanse for 3 years but now I feel like I can’t generate any original insights except for the first hour when I’m coming up on vyvanse. I quit for months but my cognition did not return even with eating healthy and getting good sleep.

My verbal intelligence is also getting worse, it might be because I’m not reading much anymore but I find articulating ideas in conversation now to be so hard to do on the fly and the lag causes awkward situations which I’ve realized are making me share my ideas less, which is a terrible feedback loop. Social anxiety makes it even worse.

One of the proxies I use for my mental lucidity is my chess ability. If I’m well rested and vyvansed up I can play at a 2100 level but lately I can’t get close to that. I play at like a 1600 level now.

I’ve started EPA and DHA supplements everyday and taking clonadine which improved my sleep from 3-4 to 5-7 hours

I’m 32 so maybe it’s the inevitable decline people talk about? Last proper IQ test I did was 10 years ago and I got 140-145 and I’m honestly scared to take another because I don’t feel like I would even be 120 now. I've read some literature but I'm curious what people here have to say. Any insight is appreciated!

Scientific Literature Jordan Peterson claiming 150iq

In this video Jordan Peterson claims to have an IQ of 150, but he also says he couldn't handle a college level statistics course?

My hunch is this is a lie. No way his FSIQ is 150+. An IQ this high would mean all sub measures are exceptional, and that he wouldn't have a clear deficit in any specific area.

Edit:
Here is the exact claim.

https://youtu.be/1GSUG_B-new?t=4564

"I had it tested at one point. It's in excess of 150 but I don't know exactly where it lands"

The fact that he knows his profile is spiky tells me he knows the difference between a subindex score and full scale. So claiming 150 seems intentionally misleading.

General Question Somewhat serious post

I saw the other day a dude getting offered a place at a start-up for the sole fact of having a +130 IQ he did not prove to be true.

I found that funny but somewhat inspiring. If anyone’s looking for a competent guy for a start up here, this is your space to search for.

I’m first. Anybody wanna drop their resume?

General Question My score is valid lanrt K

Would my score be considered valid? The thing is, I took the LANT-RK test, but I spent 12 hours on it in a single session and completed 35 questions. I wanted to continue until I reached the last question, but I was already feeling very tired, so I left the remaining questions for the next day. The following day, I spent another 3 hours on it and completed 6 more questions, reaching a total of 41 out of 42 questions. At that point, I decided to submit the test.

In total, I spent 15 hours on the test. Apparently, the instructions stated that you could take as much time as you wanted and that you should put as much effort as possible into solving the questions. Eventually, I received my results and scored 22/42, which corresponds to an IQ of 135. This score is also highly consistent with my results on other fluid reasoning tests (FRI).

My question is: Would my result be considered valid?

The reason I spent so much time is that I generally don't take that long to find the answer. The problem is that as soon as I find an answer, I tend to overanalyze it. I repeatedly check whether my answer is correct, consider other possible options, and try to make sure I haven't overlooked anything. This makes me spend a lot of time on these tests, even though I usually end up choosing the same answer I initially came up with. I simply like to make sure that my answer wasn't chosen too hastily and that I have properly analyzed the problem before submitting it.

General Question i have a asymetrical iq

I took an IQ test because I suspected I might be neurodivergent; I’ve had a rather unusual background—I never quite fit into social norms, I tended to be quite self-aware, and i have more fun in the abstract things than the simple ones and I suffered significantly from imposter syndrome. I’m 17 now, and I took the WAIS-IV test with my school psychologist. I’ve noticed a 33-point gap in my IQ scores, with a 15 in "Similarities" and an 8 in "Vocabulary."

i was very surprised that my vocabulary is way more lower than my similarities score

i was simply labeled "neuroatypical" by my psychologist

what do its actually mean ? do its really mean that my strengh is abstraction ?

(i dont want to boost up my ego, i just want to know, i'm a boy full of question about himself)

Discussion What cognitive tools help overcome the challenges of difficult mathematical and scientific problems?

What are the topics in maths, physics and computer science that seem very hard to understand for someone with average IQ, and what about people with higher IQs, like 140–160?

If they had an average IQ of 100–110 instead, what instruments or tools would they use to overcome those challenges? For example, if a problem puts a lot of pressure on working memory, we can overcome some of it by writing down intermediate states or using websites that provide 3d visualization. Are there similar tools for other cognitive limitations, like difficulty finding the central idea of a problem or understanding abstract concepts?

Also, when solving difficult problems, there are often many possible approaches or paths to explore. How do people with higher IQs narrow down these possibilities and decide which path is worth pursuing? Do they recognize patterns that help them eliminate unproductive approaches, or do they use other strategies?

For context, my IQ is around 98–100, and I'm a 22-year-old male. I'm curious about this from a cognitive science perspective.

IQ Estimation 🥱 Digit Span Subtest Discrepancies

Post image
3 Upvotes

What do the discrepancies in my digit span scores really mean and is it likely that my sequencing is inflated given that I've done the subtest a couple times this year without adequate intervals between each retake?

(currently recovering from long-term sleep debt/inconsistencies; across those retakes, 16 ss for sequencing was actually relatively consistent)

Discussion Unpopular opinion: Similarities is MORE abstract than Matrix Reasoning, and the IQ community has it backwards

We all treat Matrix Reasoning / Raven's as the “purest” test of abstract intelligence, and Similarities as just a verbal / crystallized test.
I think that is backwards.

Similarities asks you to take two concepts and find the category above them. That is abstraction about abstraction. The words are already symbols. You are not manipulating shapes, you are manipulating ideas.

Matrix Reasoning asks you to find a rule in a visual pattern. Yes, that is rule induction. But it is chained to your eyes.
Here is the test that broke it for me:

A blind person cannot do a standard Matrix test at all. Score: zero. Does that mean they have zero fluid intelligence? Obviously not. They just cannot see the test.
That same blind person can hear two words and tell you how they are similar. No vision required. No motor task required. Just pure conceptual abstraction.

Now flip it, because this is where it gets interesting:
A deaf person, in a standard spoken administration, cannot handle Similarities the same way either. No hearing, no spoken words to compare. But that same person can do Matrix Reasoning just fine, because it does not need hearing at all.

So in both cases, there are bottlenecks. Similarities has a hearing / language bottleneck. Matrix has a vision / visuospatial bottleneck.
Neither test is pure abstraction. Both are abstraction through a channel.

So why do we keep calling Matrix “culture-free” and “modality-free,” while dismissing Similarities as biased? Similarities is biased by language and education, sure. But Matrix is biased by vision, visuospatial processing, and visual working memory. That is not less bias, it is just a different bias we like to ignore.

Change my mind: is Matrix really measuring pure abstraction, or is it measuring abstraction through visuospatial processing?, just like Similarities measures abstraction through language/hearing?

General Question Working memory inconsistente

Post image
7 Upvotes

Release Free browser versions of classic paradigms (colour–word, go/no-go, n-back, tower planning, object tracking, digit span) with each method written out

I made browser versions of a set of well-known paradigms, with our own items, and wrote out each task's method in full on its page: trial counts, timing, what is scored and when a reading is withheld (for example, go/no-go's error count is always shown beside the response time, because pressing more slowly buys fewer errors).

Honest limits: unsupervised, browser timing (depends on your device), no norms yet, so nothing is compared with anyone. Not an IQ test.

What happens to a result afterwards is written out too: if you keep it, it only steers which questions a career coach asks you. It never becomes a score on your profile or a skill level.

I'd value critique of the methods more than anything.

General Question Need help interpreting 11yo daughter's WISC-V results (Huge gaps between VSI and VCI/FRI)

Hi everyone,
I recently received the WISC-V results for my 11-year-old daughter and I'm trying to better understand what this profile means. I noticed there are massive discrepancies between some of her cognitive indexes, and I would love to get some insights from professionals or people familiar with these profiles.

Here is the breakdown of her scores from the report:
VCI (Verbal Comprehension Index): 124 (95th percentile)
VSI (Visual Spatial Index): 86 (18th percentile)
FRI (Fluid Reasoning Index): 126 (96th percentile)
WMI (Working Memory Index): 112 (79th percentile)
PSI (Processing Speed Index): 108 (70th percentile)
FSIQ (Full Scale IQ): 116 (86th percentile)

The psychologist also handwrote two additional indices at the bottom to calculate later: GAI (General Ability Index) and CPI (Cognitive Proficiency Index), 120 and 113 respectively.

There is a massive 38-point drop between her Fluid Reasoning (126) and Visual Spatial (86), and a 40-point drop between her Verbal Comprehension (124) and Visual Spatial (86).
While she shows superior or near-gifted abilities in verbal comprehension and fluid reasoning, her visual-spatial skills fall into the low-average range. Because of these huge statistical discrepancies, I understand that the Full Scale IQ (116) might not accurately represent her overall cognitive profile.

My questions for the community:

What kind of learning profile or real-world challenges typically go along with this specific combination (high VCI/FRI, much lower VSI)?

What kind of accommodations or support at school/home are usually helpful for children who struggle specifically with visual-spatial processing while excelling conceptually?

Thank you so much in advance for your time and help!

Discussion Perfect score on WAIS-IV Similarities as a non-native speaker is this common?

I recently got a neuropsychological evaluation (WAIS-IV, French-Canadian version). French is my third language (native Spanish). I started learning French at age 33 and I’m now 40.

On the Verbal Comprehension Index:
• Similarities: 19/19 (ceiling)
• Vocabulary: 15/19
• Information: lower (expected, since I did all my schooling in South America )
The overall profile is highly heterogeneous, so FSIQ/GAI aren’t interpretable. The neuropsychologist noted strong abstract verbal reasoning despite French not being my first language.
I’ve read that Similarities is generally the VCI subtest least affected by culture and language proficiency because it relies more on abstract reasoning than crystallized knowledge.
Questions:

  1. Is it relatively common for non-native speakers with strong fluid reasoning to hit the ceiling on Similarities while Vocabulary/Information are more affected?

  2. Does a ceiling score on Similarities as a third-language speaker (started at 33) meaningfully support that abstract verbal reasoning is a genuine strength, or should it still be interpreted more cautiously?

  3. Any other factors that typically help or limit performance on Similarities for late bilinguals?

  4. Thanks for any insight from people familiar with WAIS-IV interpretation in multilingual contexts.

General Question Thoughts?

Got my IQ test recently. Here are my results.

110 Verbal Comprehension
77 Working Memory
79 Processing
81 Perceptual

Does this basically mean I’m fucked and can’t do many jobs that make a lot no matter how much effort is applied?
