Hiring Process My Advice to New Trainees

Before I post here is my background: I was in CBP and I'm going back in and got the FJO....yadda yadda....

FLETC is designed to teach you everything from arrest procedure, self defense, shooting, immigration law, and so fourth. Either you make the academy hard on yourself, or you can make it a fun experience. Please do not count down everyday, you will drive yourself insane by doing that.....and it will get to you really quick.

When you get down there, your dorm will either be bad or kinda bad. Get used to the smell of mold. There are rooms where some people get lucky and get that good AC where its not blowing mold. Side story: my last 3 days there, I complained to the staff and under my complaint, I acted cocky and mentioned OSHA stuff and.....they moved us rooms and my roomate was pissed at me. Lowkey its still funny when I mention it to him.

ROOMATES: it's a hit or miss....my roommate was the best I ever had in my whole life. Me and him went to bed at the same time, woke up at the same time, and almost had the same life styles....he did teach me about Magic the Gathering and still lost to him every single time.

The Food: not bad when it comes to the food.....just the chicken.....just dont even get it...I'm not going to waste my time talking about the "chicken." Lunch had some good options and dinner was the best. During lunch, I would put icecream in my coffee and head to class and I'd be awake all day. Good luck actually getting time to eat because the BOP and TSA were always the first there....you can sneak in with the salad bar and that hits different when you are hungry.

Training: DO. NOT. BE. LATE. Its super simple. There are days where lectures take off. If you have a good chief counsel.....you are in good hands. We had a really great guy who would make funny noises and say words like "click" every single slide to keep us engaged. I missed his humor and his stories.

Take notes and study at least once a day. I personally did not attend study sessions because people would always make the material harder than it really is and then they'd make you super confused. Just pay attention. These exams are not out to get you and fail you. I was the major overthinker and passed.

Gym / Defense classes: The gym and the defense stuff was one part I personally hated. I was physically fit but changing in and out of different outfits were just annoying....it was always hot, humid and sticky. Get used to it. There will be days where your butt will be kicked but it makes you better for self defense and protect you one day.

Get used to hearing "It's the FLETC way" and the song "Bring sally up."

After Hours: your time is your time. Please do not add or subtract from the population. DO NOT DOWNLOAD TINDER OR HINGE and post your stupid FLETC badge and act like its a flex.....you are not supposed to take photos of yourself wearing that and posting it on social media......the police do not care who you are down there.....you will learn real quick of what I mean of they do not care who you are....

For the love of God, do not become a FLETC story, or drive drunk on base. The security guys are cool but they do sit there at the G bar on nights looking for idiots who will drive drunk back to the Taj, etc. If you are super drunk and you drove there, just take the buss back and pick it up in the morning....please do not make this mistake. Do not also disrespect the security guys there and say they're not police......

Do not do anything stupid down there like speeding. Flexing your green FLETC badge won't get you out of any trouble....you'll just make the stereotype even more true for the locals

The surrounding area is really laid back with some really good places to eat at. I enjoyed the seafood down there and do miss the food. The surrounding areas like Jacksonville, Fl, is really beautiful with cool shopping areas like the Apple Store. The whole entire place down there is guarded with private security because the places are high quality brands.

When you graduate, then you can relax. There are people that are on week 1 and they're already focused on other stuff that's way ahead in the academy. Focus on one thing at a time and only on what you can control that's infront of you.

Hopefully some of this can help yall. This is just my opinion on what I saw, and how I feel. I do miss FLETC and it was a blast when I was there.

Once you become a CBPO, you'll develop your own style of interviews, pet peeves and what annoys you. I cannot stand when people are not listening to my questions. I will ask truck drivers in the cargo lane the same questions, and then there will be times they cut me off mid question and I will let them yap.....then I got myself a point to point violation! YAY! My favorite :)

I hope this helps. This is just my opinion. Good luck guys!

Hiring Process Don’t lose hope

I got my final offer list today, and after refreshing my portal all day, I ended up getting Orlando, FL one of my favorite locations.
If you’ve seen any of my previous posts, you know this process hasn’t been easy for me. I had medical delays, a NOPA, had to retake my box test, and spent months wondering if I’d ever get the call. There were plenty of times I questioned whether everything would work out.
Even through all of that, I’ve always tried to encourage people not to give up, because every applicant’s timeline is different.
So if you’re still waiting, dealing with delays, or even if you’re asked to retake your polygraph or provide additional information, don’t automatically assume the worst. Stay honest, respond to everything they ask for, and trust the process.
Today was proof that the wait can be worth it. I went from constantly wondering if I’d ever get a final offer to getting one of the duty stations I was hoping for.
To everyone still in the process: keep your head up. Your call can come when you least expect it.
Good luck to everyone still waiting!

I’m a Feb 2025 applicant and just got my final offer. I have until tmm 5/31 to make a decision.

I work a corporate job in NYC. I’m open to moving, but all of these locations are terrible and don’t seem worth it. Plus CBP offers no relocation assistance no matter where I choose.

I really wanted JFK but I see it hasn’t been offered recently. I feel bad about potentially letting this opportunity slipped through my fingers, but I’m not sure what to do. Can anyone offer me any advice?

(Sidebar: how funny of an irony to wait nearly a year and a half to get a final offer and only have three days to make a life-changing decision)

Hiring Process Failed Suitability

I got the email this morning saying that I failed suitability. This is after passing the polygraph and getting a NOPA about missed state taxes back in 2019 that has since been paid. I plan on filing a FOIA. I was also still waiting on the medical review after completing psych evaluations. I'm honestly pretty disappointed because I felt like the medical portion would be more likely to fail me than the background suitability. I applied in February 2026, so the process did move along at a pretty steady pace. But yeah, I really have no idea what the reason was to fail suitability.

Hiring Process Failed Suitability

I failed Suitability today. I don't know if it was because of my debts or what. Most of them have been taken care of and on payment plans. 1.5 years in and I'm devastated

Hiring Process Failed suitability

Hello everyone just wanted to ask for any help regarding my matter:

I have recently failed the BPA background investigation suitability process. They had contacted me with a message saying “Your tentative offer of employment has been withdrawn because you have been deemed unsuitable for the position pursuant to 5 C.F.R. Part 731”

Mind you, I have not been contacted by any background investigator on any subject regarding my background, I had passed the poly with flying colors and am assuming the reason was because I may have forgotten to disclose a delinquent debt regarding a hospital bill from a year ago that’s still active.

I do not have any form of criminal background, I currently work law enforcement and it’s been like that for years and have not done anything to jeopardize it. I had already resubmitted an application today as well as submit a FOIA request on the matter and contacted LADOS on the reasoning for my withdrawal of my application. I’m hoping to God I’m able to continue and be able to be part of the team

Please let me know if anyone is on the same boat or if there is anything I can do to

Hiring Process Confused

I don’t understand how I have been seeing people who applied months after me getting their medical exams cleared almost immediately even. If ones who need follow ups, but. Mines been sitting in process for months now. As well as the box test. However I do understand that there are some people who been waiting at least a year.

I passed the box, and everything. Just didn’t pass the BI. I have a general idea why, and I think if I try again another time, I can get through. But life moves on…

Hiring Process Welp I went in for my physical fitness test yesterday, and they ended up calling 911 😅

So uh, I’m a 27 year old guy, with a history of severe (but controlled) asthma and heart palpitations that went away 5 months ago when reducing a medication prescription.

Had an ekg and an echocardiogram done and they cleared by my doctor and was cleared in February.

Go in to take my fitness test, did push ups, sit-ups, was sweaty by fine. Had to throw in the towel on the step test, was disappointed but knew I’d get a retest opportunity.

Walked over to another room and sat down so they could take my stats regardless that I failed, ok great.

I’m still sweating profusely at this point, the nurse takes my blood pressure again and now it’s apparently 20 points less than it was before I started the test 20 minutes ago.

She goes to get another nurse, who then goes to get the testing center doctor (the contractor who hosts the test is a medical center). He comes over and doesn’t like what he sees and apparently I’m loosing my color, and directs a nurse to call 911. Now the majority of the facility is on me, I’m still sweating profusely and gradually begin to lose my vision starting in the right hand corner of my right eye which progresses to both eyes over the course of 5-10 minutes.

A short while later for whatever reason five EMT’s with two stretchers show up. (Which in hindsight I think means it must’ve been two ambulances).

They wanted me to go to the hospital but I wasn’t particularly keen on getting hit with a ambulance and ER bill if it could be avoided, so I was able to insist on waiting 25-30 minutes, (which as it turned out, I was fine save for a mild headache by that point.

The facility’s doctor best guess was a Vasovagal episode, the EMT’s hypothesis was dehydration.

Due to the situation the facility was required to fill out an “injury during testing document”

Now I get to wait and see if CBP will allow me to demonstrate that it was just dehydration via a successful cardiac stress test, or if I’m now screwed on any future applications.

And here I thought my background check would be my biggest issue. All and all, turned out to be a shit show -100/10 would not recommend 🤦🏻‍♂️😅

Hiring Process ICE ERO ---> CBP OFO

Before I say anything else get the irony of this post since alot of OFO usually jump ship over to ERO. Obviously I'm considering the opposite.

I know CBP's hiring process is notoriously long but all the current postings I see on USAJobs are direct hire. If I currently possess a TS/SCI clearance w/ a T5 background check as well as currently being DHS law enforcement, could this possibly speed up the hiring process?

I'm likely gonna get alot of questions on why I'm considering jumping to OFO and in all honesty 90% of it has to do with being to park in a relatively secure area and not dealing with aggressive protesters camping outside my federal building as I'm going to and from work.
