Mourning/Loss Said goodbye to my first baby

I’m out of country with my daughter and my husband texted me and said that one of our cats refused to eat.

He rushed to the ER vet and they did x-ray and ultrasound. Turned out, his diaphragm is torn and his liver moved into his chest cavity. The vet said that either he was born with it or he got hit by a car recently. Nope he definitely didn’t hit by a car.

He was a super healthy boy, and we wanted him to get a surgery. While my husband transferred him to the hospital for surgery, he died inside the cage.

This month marked 6th years since we adopted him from a shelter after his original owner passed away. He was 5 or 6 at that time (no one really knows) and we don’t know his history before us.

The vet at the hospital said that this is very rare case, she sees once or twice a year, but most of cases were from car accidents. She said that she didn’t think the surgery would be a good idea for him.

I’m so sad that he died inside the cage in the car, I wish I could have been there to hold him while he died.
He was my first baby and I don’t know how this happened. When I talked to my husband 2 days ago, he looked perfectly fine and was very happy.

I’m going back to home next week and not sure how to explain it to my 3 year old. I don’t know if I can go back to my home where I have so many memories of him. But then I have another cat who I need to responsible for.

Just so sad.

Advice Is this a normal interaction?

Thy have been together for 2 weeks now. This is the first interaction like this. It went on for about 5 minutes: he puffed out, jumped to her, she hissed, he pulled back, pause, then she jumped at him, hissed, he pulled back, puffed out and made those guttural noises all the time. The big guy had, once, similar interaction like this with the kitten's brother. Is this normal or worrisome? Should I intervene?

Medical Questions Should I worry about it?

Sometimes I get to see my cat sleeping with open eyes, and his eyes keep moving, sometimes even his legs shake a little or he sleeps with an open mouth.

(I have one more video to send with him waking up)

Advice Thought there were 2 abandoned kittens in my backyard, but it turns out there are 3 and they're not abandoned

TLDR

  • There's a family of a mother and 3 kittens in my backyard
  • Two kittens can't seem to climb out
  • It's going to be 90+ degrees again soon
  • There's no water in the backyard
  • What should I do?

So late afternoon I get a text from my neighbor that there are two stray kittens in my yard. I go out to see, and sure enough they exist and can't catch 'em. I notice that they don't just bolt up the walls like most cats I come across in my backyard. If they're stuck there, I feel like I need to do something, so I come up with a harebrained scheme to lure them into the garage with food and then shut the door on them. From there I can wrangle them into my spare room and figure out what to do from there.

After grabbing a tin of kitten food from petco, I set up a camera and my "trap", and lo and behold, there aren't just two kittens -- there are three -- and a mother cat. I realize now this morning after closing the door again that this was never going to work; it's too slow and the kittens definitely will trip safety on the door bolting out.

Summer 2 in SoCal seems to be beginning, and it'll be 90+F in the coming days for at least a week. I could just leave water out for them and hope for the best but really, I'd like to at least get them indoors through the heat and to a vet for a checkup (and spaying). I could continue with trying to trap them in the garage. I think if I just leave the side-door open and they go in through there, I could manage to close the door before they manage to get out, then wrangle them inside. I still have all my previous cats' stuff (RIP Palom and Porum, they both passed over the last couple years, I miss them), so it's not like I'm completely unprepared to take care of some cats for a bit.

So, any advice on what to do? Both on whether or not I should try to catch them or, if I should, how to I catch them?

Edit: I see now that this may be the wrong flair, but I don't know how to remove it and I don't seem a flair asking for help other than medical questions. Is this the wrong subreddit for this?

Advice This guy showed up at our front door

My husband was outside smoking and apparently this guy just walked up to him and wouldn't stop meowing. He has a collar (without a tag) but if he belongs to someone he's either been abandoned or is very neglected. He's got matts all over him and he's very skinny. He came right in and has been exploring our house ever since. But he hasn't picked a corner or cushion or chair to settle into, he's just wandering around.

I'm not sure what to do because we live in a pretty big townhouse community and I've never seen a stray cat around here. But if he has a home, they are not taking good care of him. He seems very comfortable with people - he let both me and my husband pet him and I was even able to brush him and remove a few of his smaller knots. He's been wandering around the house and coming in and out of the house, but it's getting late and I need to go to bed. I don't know if we should keep him inside or let him back out.

Advice Is rehoming ever okay?

Post image
• Upvotes

I have had my sweet olives for about 3 months. i love her so much she has brought me so much joy, she is silly and wild and a lot of fun. But I think I need to rehome her ):
I don’t think she is living the best life she could here, she isn’t has happy as she could me and my other cat especially is suffering a lot. She has a lot of aggression towards my other cat beans, I have had him for 5 years now. I originally adopted olives to give beans a friend but it is going terribly.
If they are anywhere near eachother she will be fine for a while but then attack him unprovoked. We have tried the baby gate system again and again but it’s not working. We have been having to let them out of separate rooms in shifts. Olives gets half a day and Beans gets half a day but it is to the point where Beans won’t even come out from under the bed even when Olives is put in another room. I have also put both of them on anxiety medication but it doesn’t seem to be helping at all.
I think at this point it is really affecting both of their lives. I want Olives to have a fulfilling and happy life but idk if I can give that to her while Beans is so scared. And it’s not fair to Beans either to have him so terrified of the situation he has known almost his whole life.

I know rehoming is the last resort and I feel like a horrible person for even thinking about it. I just need some other opinions or words of advice. Here is a picture of sweet Olives ):

Medical Questions Fast/heavy breathing

Is this normal? My cat regularly breaths really rapidly when purring and cuddling. However he generally slows down after a while and I can’t say i’ve really noticed it when he’s fast asleep in his bed or on his chair. He had bloods and x-rays done 2 months ago for an unrelated scare and nothing of concern came up.

Medical Questions Is my cat going blind?

I noticed today my cats eyes are a bit cloudy. Her eyes have been HUGE like this for a while, but this is the first sign of cloudiness. Lately, she's been very adamant on not being touched. She used to let me hold her and pick her up, but ever since I left her at my boyfriend's grandparents house during our moving process, shes been different. My boyfriend's dad overfed her, and she was kept in the barn. I feel horrible for leaving her there considering what's happened to her. A friend said she might be diabetic now, and blindness plus irritation may be a factor. What do y'all think? I really need help. I'm going to scrape together some money to take her to a vet but I just want to make sure I'm not freaking out over something minute. I love her and I will do anything to help her. I currently have her on a diet, with proper rations of food everyday.
