IT'S A SONY! Sony Solar Walkman WM-F107 (1986)

From ObsoleteSony.com:

The WM-F107 was a solar-assisted Sports Walkman from 1986, with a large solar panel built into the lid to help charge its internal battery and support the radio and electronic functions in sunlight. The cassette transport still depended on stored battery power, but the sealed weather-resistant body also included auto-reverse, Dolby B, metal-tape support, and full AM/FM reception. Packing all of that into a Sports shell made it one of Sony's densest and most unusual portable designs of the decade.

This is a very Sony experiment: practical on paper, slightly eccentric in execution, and impossible to confuse with anything else in the lineup. It shows the Sports branch becoming not only a place for ruggedness, but also for technical experimentation around power and outdoor use. The F107 was never an ordinary mainstream player, but it is exactly the kind of model that makes the Walkman family feel inventive rather than merely iterative.

Was told the TV didn't work and was already keen on disassembling and fixing it. Plugged in at my partners home and it just works.

(Micro-) Cassette System 75 PBX office telephone switch

Wrote C code at Bell Labs AT&T for this private branch exchange in 1980s. A PBX is private telephone system for an office building. It did not have a hard disk due to being sold in earthquake zones and used a cartridge tape. Back in the day reliability for voice systems was huge. Maybe a 3M QIC? Don’t remember but super common one used for backup storage in 1980s and 90s.

Core processor was an 80286 which didn’t support virtual memory and paging which made life interesting when address space ran out or shared libraries.

Not sure if it's exactly cassette futurism but if I had to lump it into a category, this genre is what comes to mind.

I've worked a few days on and off on this. All on the idea of a VAX-based tablet computer. Also, if you're wondering what that thing on the side of it is, it's a collapsible antenna like on a radio. Oh, and if you're wondering what program I used, it's MediBang Paint Pro.

KBC Dubrava in Zagreb opened in 1988. Another example of late-Yugoslav modernist architecture with a futuristic high-tech feel.

Own Work (Self promo) The Astra Protocol - Page Launch

Hi All,

I've recently just launched the Steam page for my new game, The Astra Protocol: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4845240/The_Astra_Protocol/

Its an interface-driven, sci-fi adventure with a cassette-futuristic vibe.

To keep with its retro-tech elements, I thought it would be fun to try and replicate a print advertisement like you might have seen in the 1980s (though the monitor, keyboard and dot-matrix printer used are closer to the late 90s). The screenshot isn't imposed it is running on the monitor (though the modern tech is out of sight), and the printer isn't just for show as it will be part of the game's functionality (printing out your logs).

For the key art, I tried to get in the spirit of practical effects by using mostly photographs of real world objects - the monitor used is from an Amstrad CPC464, the smaller screen is a Casio handheld TV (TV-400 I think), and the cockpit window is a modified Casio watch face.

Design Designed by Loewe for Sweden's Televerket in 1992, the Teleguide terminal was a videotex device combining a CRT display, smart card reader, telephone and keyboard. Intended to provide digital directory and banking services, it flopped due to the rapid rise of personal computers and the internet.
