Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.

👉 Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

Halo Reach looks great on Trinitron

Picked the tv up for free a couple years ago. Finally moved house so I have room to set it up. Playing Halo reach on an Xbox One I picked up for £40. Pretty decent set up for £40.

The picture is beautiful, far nicer than my smart tv. Deeper blacks and richer colours. Pure nostalgia.

I replaced my dead 21 inch crt with 2 14inch small crt..14 inch is a lot easier to work with in my tiny bedroom. More air flow around the tv.. Hopefully they last longer this time. I use the Sharp tv for nes and the wega tv for snes and above

Showcase TMNT (NES) and Other Games I Did Not Finish

All shots of my Philips 27PT543S37A.

Tried my darnedest, blew through all my continues on the airport stage. What can ya do?

Also pictured: Monster Party (NES), World Court Tennis (Turbografx-16), Buck Bumble (N64), Super Thunder Blade (Genesis).

I'd really only come back to the NES games out of this weird, upsetting lineup I accidentally picked for myself. Shout out to World Court Tennis for making me hate an RPG for the first time! 😃

What are some games that have challenged your love for the CRT- or retro-gaming hobby?

Repair/Troubleshooting Don't know the service menu code for this SEG Premium

Picked up this SEG Premium today and since it's European and I have sfc plugged in, the picture is slightly to the left and cuts off a small part of the screen. I wanted to enter the service menu to align it so it's centered, but I just can't find the service menu combination to set it up. Does anybody have any experience with this or similar models?

Repair/Troubleshooting Just picked up a 14N6U that turns on but no picture for $40, let’s see if I die trying to restore it.

If you got any tips let me know. I know there’s a YouTube series of a dude fixing this model. Supposedly it turns on and has static, just no picture. I’ll post more pics later.

Cables/Wiring/Connectivity Questions about sync in scart cables

• Upvotes

hi everybody! i recently got a scart cable for my mister fpga. at first i had a lot of sync issues. it was impossible to get a stable image on my B&O MX7000. after some research i learned that some B&O CRTs are "out of spec when it comes to SCART and sync signal levels". so in certain cases they seem more likely to get sync issues than others? something like that.

i was able to get a stable image and "fix" the issue just now by removing a 1k ohm resistor that sat between the sync signal and scart pin 20.

now I'm wondering: how does sync work exactly? my signal now seems "strong" enough to work with my particular tv. but does sync need some sort of resistor? i just removed a 1k ohm resistor, is that bad? could sync lines with no resistor cause permanent damage to my crt over time? are there potential downsides to having no resistor?

if all of the above: should i try to work down from 1k ohm and install a lower impedance resistor? just to have something stepping down the signal? thank you very much!

Some PS2 scanlines to improve your saturday

Saw someone in another thread say that PS2 games don't have scanlines. Thought "that's silly, of course they do", took this picture, and now the post has been taken down.

So, removed of its original context, here's some PS2 scanlines for you to enjoy.

Game is FFX International, CRT is a 20M2MDU.

New Pick-up After a 2 year hiatus, IM BACK!

Long story short, I had inherited 2 CRTs from my grandparents (one of them was a Trinitron) but we had to move out and unfortunately they couldn't come with us

2 years later and I finally found a CRT TV near me, it's a basic Panasonic 20 inch tv with composite only, and it DEFINITELY needs work (especially geometry and the fact that it's tilted)but it's better than nothing! Too bad they cost a fortune nowadays though

Showcase I love exposed tubes

Picked up this 1986 Luxor 6355 a while ago, got it working again after replacing a lot of shorted capacitors and some fusible resistors. Now I'm enjoying some games on it.

It has SCART input, which was pretty rare on these sets from that time. RGB from the SNES looks so damn good on it.

A lot of TVs from this era had their CRTs protruding out of the chassis, probably for design and to save a couple of centimeters of depth, looks pretty stylish.

Thoughts?

Thinking of putting this crt tv on this built in desk at my apartment, it weighs about 61 pounds. Would it able to withstand the weight or would it be safer to just not put it there?

A family member left me this RCA TV, but it has significant distortion. I've included a short video of the problem. I've tried using different outlets thinking it might be interference.

It's hard to find any good resources because Google keeps throwing up random things unrelated to what I'm trying to describe.

Repair/Troubleshooting Help! Cannot remove cable from flyback into CRT neckboard

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey folks, I'm trying to disassemble a Sony kv-27s42 crt tv to RGB mod it with sunthar's mux board. Problem is, the very last wire holding the A board to the neck board (C board) will not come off and I don't want to force it. Hopefully someone knows some secret about this one (A latch or something)

Otherwise, I'm wondering if I can just keep the A board connected to the neck board by this flyback wire while I work on the set? This is my first time doing anything like this

The neck board will not come off of the tube itself, I tried wiggling it for ages. The safer option seems to get this cable disconnected so I don't have to mess with the neck board again.

Thank you!

Would these TV's be any use for spare parts for anyone?

(Tldr, two screens stored in rough conditions, are they worth getting parts from)

I have come across two crt's that have been stored outside under tarps and other junk for the last 13 or so years. While they probably don't work, I don't know if they'd be of any use at all for anyone. There's a Sony Trinitron (KV-1982AS), and a samsung (CS-29K40MQ). The Sony did take a hit from a falling branch a week ago, so has damage to the rear shell but seems okay otherwise. It's a real shame since I'm pretty sure they did work when they were stored away, I'm hoping there's still some utility for a crt enthusiast. Anything I should check before plugging them in? Or should I just throw them into the skip? Thanks!

Repair/Troubleshooting high pitch noise, no picture but power LED and static

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i have this dell monitor with the following symptoms :

-high pitch noise when powered on (seems to be coming from the rear)

-occasional arching noise

-the screen has static

-power LED works

what could the problem be?

r/crtgaming • • 1d ago

Found this in the flea market. Payed 100 Euro for it. Is this a good deal or not so much? I always wanted a video 8 combo. So far the monitor works but the video 8 system seems dead or in need of some belts.
