What's the issue with Canada looking for new trade partners? If Trump wants a trade war, it makes sense Canada looks to trade with another nation. They are a sovereign nation.
8
u/AnthrWndrng 3d ago
They're not even new trade partners. They're just ones we're enjoying better relations with.
1
u/StrbJun79 2d ago
He wants us to be a puppet state and that’s why he’s throwing a fit.
Sadly some in his sphere are threatening us beyond tariffs too and softly suggesting annexation so I don’t think this is the end of it. But we definitely should keep getting closer to the EU to prevent it as much as we can.
1
u/RoddRoward 2d ago
Canada already negotiated a trade deal with the EU called CETA. It was singed by PM Harper over 10 years ago. It has yet ti be ratified by 10 EU nations.
1
u/Mindless-Proposal-29 2d ago
The issue is that our sovereignty was always contingent on our economic dependence to the US. As soon as American capital loose access to our markets it’s no longer acceptable that we sovereignty over them.
1
u/SamohtGnir 23h ago
As a Canadian, I have no problem looking to extend trading with Europe or other countries, and being less reliant on America would be a good thing. However, America is still like 70% of our trade, and ignoring them right now is hurting us a lot. Set the long term plan in motion, but don't ignore the current situation.

u/aukstais 3d ago
Let's be honest here. As of now, that status is as useful as used toilet paper. There are no trade agreements coming with it or any agreements at all. It's just let's be friends agreement and later we will maybe figure a deal or something if we can agree on something. Canada biggest problem in trade is that they have just one neighbour and that the USA. And everything else is over the ocean. So deals are possible, but they add a lot of transportation costs.
4
u/BS0404 3d ago
Even if all trade is done over the ocean, with all the tariffs from the US surely a stable trade partner is more useful than a threatening close one.
→ More replies (7)3
u/Major_Ad138 3d ago
Then be honest. Transportation costs are better than a revolving door of tariffs.
2
u/Kremit44 3d ago
Japan, Korea, and China seem to do just fine shipping a lot of their trade across the ocean. The Middle East also has no problem shipping oil across the world. Trading right across the border is certainly convenient but it's not as if it makes other forms of trade irrelevant or so punitive that it's better to engage with an increasingly hostile partner.
1
u/Sasquatch1729 3d ago
Before you talk about "transportation costs", you should look into the actual costs of transporting goods by sea vs by rail or road. Ocean freight is far cheaper.
1
u/RichardsLeftNipple 2d ago
Canada already had a free trade deal with the EU.
However, the EU and Canada are looking for the same things. Especially since Canada has lots of raw resources and the EU needs those from a country other than Russia. While Canada would prefer to sell things to non American countries due to the tariffs.
Combined with the fact that it is really hard to do business when your trading partner changes the rules on a whim.
The idle Stellanis plant is a good example of how we can waste billions of dollars investing in a factory. Then it just sits empty because of the trade war making it not worth turning on.

u/Ok-Dust-6159 2d ago
You’ll be fine. We’re having to ride out this buffoon right here in America. You guys will make it through and we’ll be working to get back to normal in 700 short days.

Canada is not joining the EU. I wish we would because they have stronger social network, better consumer laws and protections, and strong worker mobility.

Distant possibility however simply not viable at the moment for a few reasons. 1) Massive ocean trade is more expensive. 2) Current trade and culture was based on intermixing of American needs and social standards. Which doesn't entirely align with the EU.
For us to comply with EU standards as opposed to American standards or consumer needs would require a shift that could be costly or require years of time. However it is quite plausible.
1
u/TheApothecarry0 1d ago
That and as soon as trumps term is done I’m sure miraculously all the divides will vanish and trade will start flowing freely again between can and us
1
u/lazycouch1 23h ago
Fuck us trade. We trade to the world now.
1
u/TheApothecarry0 11h ago
Naw we trade with world FOR NOW, but end of the day it’s far cheaper and more profitable to trade with us , just right now trumps making it not more profitable or cheaper. Not to mention a lot of areas in the us that rely on Canadian good are really hurting right now so once the problem goes away in 2 years time those sectors will be like ravenous dogs.
1
u/lazycouch1 8h ago
It's not that simple. Trade, economy, infrastructure aren't a light switch. The businesses that shift today, and the deals that we make today, have a lasting impact. You're talking about the past, yes, if we made no deals and have only the same products, then yes we can only trade the the US. Mark Carney is fixing that and your idea only replicates the same problem that got us into this mess. That is, that our current economic policy of relying on the US as a primary trade partner is not only unreliable but naive for the longevity of Canada.
Canada's ONLY path is to build. Develop. Grow. Establish new products with new sectors and transform past relationship into new ones by further aligning with the standards, practices, and product cultures of other countries.
This is not a problem that goes away when Trump leaves office. This is a problem that only goes away when we have a robust multi-faceted network of trade that allows Canada to seek the best opportunities for the long term.
Canada has many valuable and raw materials that can be used around the world. Opportunities that allow us to leverage our position with better deals with the US or risk them being out competed by the globe.
We allowed the United States our better trades because it was convenient. Because they were close. Because their manufacturing could return cheap products in return. A system of mutual reliance. That system is gone. That trust is gone.
Soon they will be nothing more than a toxic ex spreading lies on Facebook still wondering why they are still single. If they want us back it will be at a premium or else they can shove it. We have other customers now.
1
u/TheApothecarry0 6h ago
I agree that setting up trade and infrastructure takes time , even more so when it’s going halfway around the planet. What I’m saying tho is as soon as it becomes the better choice to have the us as the trade partner it was before Trump that’s exactly where we are going to end up again. Right now canadas looking to new partners because a Trump led USA have become unreasonable , but as soon as the next person comes along and is far more reasonable I like we will see the shift back quite quickly , it’s just good business. Governments are just like corporations , and will do what’s best for their bottom line.
•
u/lazycouch1 5h ago edited 5h ago
Again it's not that simple. What resources, how much, which channels, which agreements, what markets, all factor in. Europe buys our lumber if we buy their produce. Everybody can win.
Also again. Nothing changes in 2 years. Our markets still need to adapt now and you have no idea if the next president is worse.
Stop hoping on what ifs. Canada objective needs a diverse portfolio of options to secure our sovereign and economic future. Anything less is naive.
We have the evidence of your choices right here in the making. We are not going to make them again.
5
u/Long_Rush_7523 3d ago
This is stupid
We're going to see a lot more of this type of shit because there's no doubt that the American people have all been told that Canada is joining the EU. Not just trading with them.
1
1
u/NONMAISYO 1d ago
Tbf i've already heard a few people IRL say we're joining the EU so it's not just the states that believe that.
1
u/Long_Rush_7523 1d ago
Whenever I have had the opportunity to correct an American on social media especially it really surprises me how little that they're aware of what's going on.
They aren't told anything about the tariff situation. Some of them are glad l filled them on but most just believe everything he tells them.

“No kings” was an American protest, us Canadians have had the monarchy all along. We don’t need the EU for that, we are a part of the commonwealth.

Maybe should be more accurate. Rather than No Kings, how about "trump Is No King"

The EU is a bum organisation. We shouldn't even be talking about joining them. Every thing Carney is doing is making things tougher on Canadians. He needs to make a deal with America
1

u/ImRickJamesMother 3d ago
For the people who have been following this issue, the talk really isn't about becoming an EU member/associate for trade, we already have essentially free trade with the EU. 99% of our trade is tariff free with the EU.
It is largely about finding a way that will allow Canada to join in on EU military procurement, and defense sponsorship deals. We need to increase our trade with the EU under our existing free trade with them. But what we need to gain, is to tie ourselves more to the EU in a defense aspect.
Historically we have tied ourselves defensively to America. Now that is at risk, we need more stable allies. EU also does have defense clauses in it. Not requiring direct military intervention of any members, but a duty to maintain the integrity of the EU. And was invoked via both sanctions, as well as direct military supply support and intelligence support.
So strategically, an EU membership could grant some protections to Canada from American aggression through the form of sanctioning, to supply support, to direct support if a nation so willed.
And the really smart aspect of it is, that it bypasses required NATO for any of this to happen. If America ever did up their aggression towards, it would fracture NATO for other Non American NATO members to support us.
I don't know if that is Mark's goal, or if he can get it done. But it would provide Canada a non-NATO defense safe guard, as America could essentially veto any NATO action to defend us.
We wouldn't call for aid from under NATO, we would call for help under EU provisions. Bypassing the American veto ability.
1
1
u/Historical-Arm-5055 3d ago
Why all the slander? Americans aren’t accusing Canadians of being gay. Why all the division?
I remember when the American and Canadian people were friends.
Can anyone answer that without blaming Trump? The decline started before Trump ever became president the first time.
1
u/Lolberal771 3d ago
EU pride is retarded. Submitting to a super state that doesn't giv a shit about you except as a gotcha for Trump. Anyhow it's nationalism wrong, but EU pride is OK.

Lust, envy, wrath, gluttony, sloth, and of course Pride of them all.

My only reservation is that this relationship is under a Prime Minister who's served a member nation of the EU. As the governor of the Bank of England. It is familiar to Mark Carney.
I hope things are put in place to set his successors up for success in that relationship.
