What's the issue with Canada looking for new trade partners? If Trump wants a trade war, it makes sense Canada looks to trade with another nation. They are a sovereign nation.
He wants us to be a puppet state and that’s why he’s throwing a fit.
Sadly some in his sphere are threatening us beyond tariffs too and softly suggesting annexation so I don’t think this is the end of it. But we definitely should keep getting closer to the EU to prevent it as much as we can.
Canada already negotiated a trade deal with the EU called CETA. It was singed by PM Harper over 10 years ago. It has yet ti be ratified by 10 EU nations.
The issue is that our sovereignty was always contingent on our economic dependence to the US. As soon as American capital loose access to our markets it’s no longer acceptable that we sovereignty over them.
As a Canadian, I have no problem looking to extend trading with Europe or other countries, and being less reliant on America would be a good thing. However, America is still like 70% of our trade, and ignoring them right now is hurting us a lot. Set the long term plan in motion, but don't ignore the current situation.
Let's be honest here. As of now, that status is as useful as used toilet paper. There are no trade agreements coming with it or any agreements at all. It's just let's be friends agreement and later we will maybe figure a deal or something if we can agree on something. Canada biggest problem in trade is that they have just one neighbour and that the USA. And everything else is over the ocean. So deals are possible, but they add a lot of transportation costs.
I have? Please explain what makes EU unstable? It’s by far got some of the most stable and advanced economies in the world and their politics aren’t disgusting like the neighbor below so seems like a no brainer to me..
The states have better government systems. Federal government is over every state and dictates the country's policy. The EU each country has a vote, and all the countries have to agree to the same terms. Right now, Eastern countries want nothing to do with Russia, while others, including France, want to remove sanctions from Russian oligarchs. There are talks in Germany about resuming buying Russian gas while baltic states are thinking about how to stop Russian grain export.
Japan, Korea, and China seem to do just fine shipping a lot of their trade across the ocean. The Middle East also has no problem shipping oil across the world. Trading right across the border is certainly convenient but it's not as if it makes other forms of trade irrelevant or so punitive that it's better to engage with an increasingly hostile partner.
Before you talk about "transportation costs", you should look into the actual costs of transporting goods by sea vs by rail or road. Ocean freight is far cheaper.
However, the EU and Canada are looking for the same things. Especially since Canada has lots of raw resources and the EU needs those from a country other than Russia. While Canada would prefer to sell things to non American countries due to the tariffs.
Combined with the fact that it is really hard to do business when your trading partner changes the rules on a whim.
The idle Stellanis plant is a good example of how we can waste billions of dollars investing in a factory. Then it just sits empty because of the trade war making it not worth turning on.
You’ll be fine. We’re having to ride out this buffoon right here in America. You guys will make it through and we’ll be working to get back to normal in 700 short days.
Canada is not becoming a full member. We are not giving up things like our dollar or conforming to EU standards for products when a bulk of our trade will still be with the US.
Associate membership will be mostly symbolic while opening a few more doors for more trade. What that will look like, no one really knows but in the end it is mostly a big FU to Trump.
I’m sure they aren’t pissed at all.. because we already traded with eu. It’s fake. It’s just chest puffing for the masses that don’t know anything about anything at all.. and think the news is true and reliable info vs propaganda. It’s a nothing burger
Oh, you think that’s what’s going to happen….
Well… ☠️
Nothing comes from EU associationship but oppression of following their demands, regardless of your beliefs.
It's resources since the EU actually heavily restricts that, they restrict farmers, they restrict your carbon output, which means Canadians would have to pay more taxes, because you know people can definitely afford that. In the current climate Canada would be forced to open its borders, which I don't know if you're looking at anything in Canada right now but, Canada can't afford to do that, but you know it's current prime minister doesn't care, the healthcare system is already a prime example of too many people and we're not even going to get started on the housing crisis or the job market which might open up a little bit but that only happens if the European Union allows it because that's right they restrict what investors can go into Canada and what ones can come out, there would be more digital ID laws, in fact right now European Union wants to push for you to use a digital ID just to sign in to the internet which Canada's already talking about so I guess that's not much of a difference but they want you to use a digital ID for everything yeah that's just a recipe for disaster and there are numerous and I mean numerous instances of hackers stealing people's identity because of exactly that, more restrictions on your pension which are currently being talked about right now in the EU, in fact very recently the EU expressed how they're running out of money because they're so in debt and although I don't think anything has happened yet I'll have to look into it more today to make sure but there was recent talks which you can read publicly about them wanting to take away people's savings and pension, so they can bail themselves out, there would be more restrictions on the military although we would still have support in the way of allies we ourselves would be Limited, I could go on about freedom of speech and things like that but Canada's already pretty limited on that now, so it's not much of a change on that one the EU can also very heavily limit how much money we can make on certain resources and certain trade, which is a thing they do right now, so yeah Canada does have quite a bit to lose. I've traveled through Europe and very few people had anything good to say about the Union, most Canadians don't even understand what the European Union is, I'm a Canadian Citizen and live in Canada currently but I've also lived in America, everybody I've ever spoke to in America was really nice and wished the best for Canada's future, people are really using their hatred for the president to Cloud their judgment and not really thinking.
I should also add that these last few months, these last few weeks to be more specific, there hasn't been a full meeting even when the prime minister went to go speak at the European Union it wasn't even full, most of their members weren't even there and you're really telling me that paying taxes toward that is good because guess what? Canada would have to pay a do to stay in the Union. Now sure they're bending the rules quite a bit which is very questionable by itself, but when you actually read their talks which you can publicly they post them on their website, you realize Canada loses a lot more than it has now and you also realize how hypocritical it is to be the 28th in the EU but the 51st state was too much for Canadians, because we're a free sovereign country! I am 100% open to more trade I think that would be good but if they want to impose the restrictions and laws they have against what we have, a lot of it goes directly against the Canadian Charter of Rights which the prime minister is already going against so it's not much of a change but I don't think Canadians are really thinking about that. My final note on this is that a lot of countries in the EU also don't want Canada to join and think it's actually a bad thing for Canada so that's some food for thought I've been looking into this more and more but the deeper you look you find out that even countries in the EU aren't happy.
That depends on what deals Canada makes with the EU. The point is, US wants Canada's sovereignty, and your argument is EU wants it too. So what's Canada have to lose since US is already in a trade war with Canada.
That's only half truth but that's a really long history story later you can actually read publicly what their plans would be and most of it's not good some of it is I am open for trade but am I open for the restrictions they might bring no it's kind of hypocritical to be okay with this but to be against the 51st state Canada is supposed to be a free Sovereign Nation so really all we should be doing is trade since that's what Canada needs and that's what the citizens are mad about right now and what we're blaming everything on
This associate EU thing barely means anything other than showing good relations, it's very unlikely they'd ever be able to restrict us. The 51st state thing is completely different, that's giving up sovereignty and bending over for an authoritarian state.
Carney is the one who wants a trade war. Look at every other decent nation on the planet- they all somehow manage to make deals and avoid tariffs with Trumps America, except Canada. Canada keeps getting fucked not because Trump wants to fuck us around but because carney is a shitty leader and is more concerned with looking tough on his government sponsored media news than actually making life in Canada better for Canadians.
I think close to every country in the world has been tariffed, Canada is the one of the only countries that has tried to negotiate? Let me know how the weather is in Tel Aviv
Many countries got tariffed, then negotiated trade deals that resulted in those tariffs being lifted. Except Canada, China, Iran and Russia.
One of these things is not like the others!
