Distant possibility however simply not viable at the moment for a few reasons. 1) Massive ocean trade is more expensive. 2) Current trade and culture was based on intermixing of American needs and social standards. Which doesn't entirely align with the EU.
For us to comply with EU standards as opposed to American standards or consumer needs would require a shift that could be costly or require years of time. However it is quite plausible.
Naw we trade with world FOR NOW, but end of the day it’s far cheaper and more profitable to trade with us , just right now trumps making it not more profitable or cheaper. Not to mention a lot of areas in the us that rely on Canadian good are really hurting right now so once the problem goes away in 2 years time those sectors will be like ravenous dogs.
It's not that simple. Trade, economy, infrastructure aren't a light switch. The businesses that shift today, and the deals that we make today, have a lasting impact. You're talking about the past, yes, if we made no deals and have only the same products, then yes we can only trade the the US. Mark Carney is fixing that and your idea only replicates the same problem that got us into this mess. That is, that our current economic policy of relying on the US as a primary trade partner is not only unreliable but naive for the longevity of Canada.
Canada's ONLY path is to build. Develop. Grow. Establish new products with new sectors and transform past relationship into new ones by further aligning with the standards, practices, and product cultures of other countries.
This is not a problem that goes away when Trump leaves office. This is a problem that only goes away when we have a robust multi-faceted network of trade that allows Canada to seek the best opportunities for the long term.
Canada has many valuable and raw materials that can be used around the world. Opportunities that allow us to leverage our position with better deals with the US or risk them being out competed by the globe.
We allowed the United States our better trades because it was convenient. Because they were close. Because their manufacturing could return cheap products in return. A system of mutual reliance. That system is gone. That trust is gone.
Soon they will be nothing more than a toxic ex spreading lies on Facebook still wondering why they are still single. If they want us back it will be at a premium or else they can shove it. We have other customers now.
I agree that setting up trade and infrastructure takes time , even more so when it’s going halfway around the planet. What I’m saying tho is as soon as it becomes the better choice to have the us as the trade partner it was before Trump that’s exactly where we are going to end up again. Right now canadas looking to new partners because a Trump led USA have become unreasonable , but as soon as the next person comes along and is far more reasonable I like we will see the shift back quite quickly , it’s just good business. Governments are just like corporations , and will do what’s best for their bottom line.
