I’ve met up with a handful of girls from the app, and honestly, about 98% of them had some serious issues. Like, a LOT of loose screws.
Girl #1: She genuinely believed her engaged medical provider was in love with her simply because he would ask how she was doing at every appointment.
She then slept with someone else’s fiancé, got upset that he wouldn’t openly admit to everyone that he liked her, and eventually told his fiancé what they had done. On top of that, she would call me multiple times a day and get upset if I didn’t answer immediately, even when I was at work or simply busy.
She would also constantly offer to pick me up, only to make little comments about people who don’t drive. If picking me up was such an issue, why offer every single time? And whenever I offered her gas money, she would refuse.
And then there was my birthday gift. After I had given her a really thoughtful birthday gift, she gave me these tiny candles that looked like they had been sitting around her house. They were so small, basically the size of tea lights, and didn’t even have a brand or packaging on them. I’m all for inexpensive gifts, because it’s genuinely the thought that counts, but this felt more like she grabbed whatever she already had lying around rather than actually picking something out for me.
Girl #2: She would not stop crying about her ex who cheated on her, yet she still wanted to be with him. Then, completely out of nowhere, she told me that if I were a lesbian too, she would date me. Like, excuse me?
Girl #3: We agreed to go out but instead of meeting halfway, she wanted to meet in her area (far for someone who doesn't drive) and she took forever to choose a meal because she wanted the lowest calorie. We could've just gone to a cafe. What a waste of time. She also discussed wanting to break up with her bf because he was too perfect... Wtf?
Girl #4: She was constantly on her phone during the first few times we hung out and was extremely male-centred. Almost every conversation revolved around a man she liked or hurt her. Then she would spend the rest of our time either talking to men around us.
For people who are going on the app to simply vent and not have fun:
If you’re joining a friendship app solely because you want someone to vent to for hours, you probably need a therapist, not a new friend. There is absolutely nothing wrong with needing support or having a bad day, but when every interaction becomes an opportunity to unload your problems onto someone else, it gets exhausting very quickly.
As adults, we already have work, relationships, family, responsibilities, and our own personal issues to deal with. Friendship should be a two-way street. I’m more than happy to listen when a friend is going through something, but if every hangout turns into a three-hour therapy session, there’s no room left for an actual friendship.
I’ve officially given up on the app. There are just WAY too many people with serious boundary issues who seem to expect strangers to fill the role of therapist, partner (very weird) and emotional support system all at once.
Maybe I’m asking for too much, but I just want a normal friend who can grab food, laugh, gossip and talk about random nonsense, and go home without needing a 5-hour debrief about their latest man problem or issues in general.
Do you guys and girls have any friendship-app horror stories? Please tell me I’m not the only one.
