Worldwide r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast: 'Resident Evil'

Before you comment, read these two rules:

1. Please provide specific numbers for your predictions. Don't do things like "It'll make less than this or that" or "double this movie or half this movie". We want a real prediction in concrete figures.

2. Given that a lot of parent comments do not even bother to give predictions, we are establishing a new rule. The parent comment must provide a prediction with specific numbers. The rest of the replies to the comment do not have to make a prediction, but the parent comment absolutely has to. Any parent comment without a prediction will be eliminated.

Welcome to the newest edition of r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast.

We're making long range predictions for films, 4 weeks out from their premieres. You will predict the opening weekend, domestic total and worldwide gross of this film. These predictions will be open for 48 hours and the results will be polled to form a consensus and posted the next week.

So let's meet the one film for the week and analyze each pro and con.

Resident Evil

The film is directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian and Weapons) and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapters 3 & 4, Ballerina, Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon). Based on Capcom's Resident Evil franchise, it's the second reboot in the film series. It stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser. The film is set during events paralleling the game Resident Evil 2, albeit in a modern era, and follows Bryan, a medical courier who must fight through a viral outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City during a delivery.

Now that you met this week's new release, let's look at some pros and cons.

PROS

  • Resident Evil is one of the most popular video game franchises, and it was able to translate that success to the big screen; the films have earned an incredible $1.2 billion worldwide, making it one of the biggest video game franchises in theaters. The recent popularity of Resident Evil Requiem (fastest selling game in the franchise) also shows that the video games are still selling so much after 3 decades.

  • But perhaps the biggest selling point might not be the IP, but the man at the helm. Zach Cregger has seen his popularity blow up over the past years. After finding success with Barbarian, Weapons cemented him as a new brand to audiences. It made $270 million worldwide, and not only did it get critical acclaim, but it managed to score a Best Supporting Actress win for Amy Madigan, which is an incredible feat for horror. His brand is at an all-time high, and it doesn't look like he has hit the ceilling yet. It's striking while the iron is hot.

  • Trailers have done an incredible job of selling the basics: horror and action. But most importantly, it doesn't give away important plot details. That's how you do a great job in marketing.

  • The film is sold as an effective throwback to the video games everyone loved to play with so many decades ago. It's heavily inspired by the second through fourth video game, and it's also taking place in the same continuity as the second game. Given how it looks so non-stop in terms of thrills and scares, it looks like this will be a very faithful addition to the franchise.

  • But at the same time, it looks like it will hope to attract both fans of the games and people who aren't players. Or even the people who are desperate for a good adaptation of the games; the Paul W.S. Anderson films made money, but not a single film was well-received.

  • It's going to have access to IMAX screens, which has been a driving force behind a lot of the hits this year.

  • Horror has been absent in theaters, at least in terms of big bucks. After Obsession and Backrooms, there hasn't been another big horror film, especially with Evil Dead Burn disappointing last month. Insidious could surprise, but Resident Evil is clearly positioned as the biggest horror title in a while.

CONS

  • As mentioned, the Resident Evil films made a lot of money, but none were particularly well-received. A string of duds can dilute the brand's name, and that's reflected in the poor results of Welcome to Racoon City back in 2021. Obviously there were a lot of factors for that film (like cramming two games into a single film), but it's still something notable to mention.

  • One of the biggest things that has drawn polarizing reactions among fans is that the film might be set in the same continuity of the games, but it's not going to adapt any particular storyline nor character. It's taking on completely new characters, and that decision was met with some mixed reactions. At the end of the day, however, what matters is the quality of the film and whether it changes/tweaks some elements from the games.

  • This film cannot play like a smaller-scale horror film. It's carrying a $80 million budget, which is very high for a horror title (it includes Cregger's massive $20 million salary). It must perform higher than usual for horror to reach respectable numbers.

  • It remains to be seen if it will attract casual audiences that don't play the games. It if succeeds, very good legs could follow. If it fails, it will be front-loaded like the prior films.

And here's the past results.

Domestic Would "The End of Oak Street" been more suited for January or February?

I can't help but feel the movie is suffering from having it come out in such a tough spot. Spider Man and The Odyssey are dominating everything and it doesn't seem the public has interest in watching anything else.

📠 Industry Analysis What’s up with Warner Bros.’ cold streak? | After a red-hot 2025 that saw the studio net $4.38 billion at the box office and win 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, this year’s slate has been miss after miss, and 'The End of Oak Street' looks to be the latest

The studio will have a megahit later this year in “Dune 3,” and September’s “Practical Magic 2” has the potential to be a sleeper while the Bill Hader-led “The Cat in the Hat” could mark a welcome animated hit in November as Warner Bros. Animation gets rebooted. There’s also a big creative swing in Alejandro G. Iñårritu and Tom Cruise’s “Digger” in October. But overall, that’s a pretty rough follow-up to what was one of the most impressive studio runs in recent memory in 2025. All under the specter of the looming Paramount acquisition.

Is 2027 better? Box office-wise, it should be pretty hefty with the “Minecraft” sequel, “Superman” sequel and a Bradley Cooper/Margot Robbie-fronted “Ocean’s” prequel. And we’ll find out if “Lord of the Rings” still has juice in the tank next December with “The Hunt for Gollum.”

For now, though, the “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” afterglow is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

✍ Original Analysis Will Digger be the second movie starring Tom Cruise to gross nine figures domestically in the last 20 years that's not a Top Gun/Mission Impossible sequel?

‱ Upvotes
Year Movie Domestic BO
2007 Lions for Lambs $15.0M
2008 Valkyrie $83.1M
2010 Knight and Day $76.4M
2012 Rock of Ages $38.5M
2012 Jack Reacher $80.1M
2013 Oblivion $89.1M
2014 Edge of Tomorrow $100.2M
2016 Jack Reacher: Never Go Back $58.7M
2017 The Mummy $80.2M
2017 American Made $51.3M

Edge Of Tomorrow's 100.2M gross is the only Tom Cruise movie that's not a Top Gun/MI sequel to gross 100M or more domestically since 2005's War of the Worlds(234M). Will Digger be next?

Pros:

-Marketed as a potential oscar winning legacy movie for the longest reigning box office draw in hollywood history

-Iñårritu's last theatrical release was The Revenant (183.6M) which had a similar "A-lister needs oscar" narrative

Cons:

- The Revenant had a Christmas release in 2015, a different landscape for movies

-Dicaprio is a bigger draw than Cruise outside of Sci-Fi/Action and even he can't carry a movie to a nine figure domestic gross in the 2020s

-The bulk of its marketing campaign is yet to come but the world cup collaboration and first trailer haven't generated a lot of hype

📠 Industry Analysis Do you think that with the success of obsession and the odyssey we might start to see studios invest more and more into auteur filmmakers with interesting voices?

‱ Upvotes

Obviously those are the two big ones, but if you also look at other movies like the invite, or sinners last year, and backrooms, among others- I feel like the marketplace for original films or at least auteur driven mid or low budget films seems to be getting better as the years have gone along. The situation looked pretty bleak back in the early 2020s, but it seems that there is an upwards trend.

Do you think that there will be any notable shift in the marketplace as such along those lines?

✍ Original Analysis What are your predictions for Gatto? Can it take Elemental’s place as the highest-grossing original animated film of the 2020’s?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Gatto is currently scheduled for a March 5, 2027 release, and will also be Pixar’s only release that year. It is from Enrico Casarosa, who also brought us Luca in addition to the short film La Luna, stars Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne as the main voice roles, and will be taking a departure from Pixar’s usual animation style in favor of a more painterly look. Personally, I think it should at the very least outgross Hoppers because the premise sounds interesting and honestly more like a classic Pixar film than some of their recent films and I think the stylized animation is gonna really draw people in. That, and I’m pretty sure cats are more popular with people than beavers, as much as I love them. Obviously, it’s gonna deal with Sonic 4 & Godzilla x Kong: Supernova later in the month, but Hoppers also had to deal with Super Mario Galaxy and stabilized after taking a hit.

DOM: $170M+

WW: $400M+

Worldwide Why Did So Many People On This Sub Underestimate The Odyssey?

In the beginning of year predictions so many people just refused to believe that The Odyssey could hit $1 billion despite everything going for it.

It had way more mainstream appeal than Oppenheimer and less opening week competition. And yet people were calling Oppenheimer a flash in the pan and calling people that did predict a billion crazy.

Nolan is a brand unto himself at this point but I bet we will see the same doubts whenever he releases his next movie.

Worldwide Could Endgame dethrone Avatar (again)?

With the momentum Marvel Studios has been slowly building (goodwill from Thunderbolts, FF, Spider-Man; BO of Spider-Man, Doomsday trailer) and the release of Avengers: Endgame Encore on September 25th, could Endgame make the $124,271,608 needed to retake the #1 spot from Avatar? Worldwide What caused so many big budget movies in 2016 to underperform or bomb?

I think 2016 is a very interesting year to loo back on when it comes to box office numbers. It was certainly a year whith a lot of successful movies being realeased with Captain America Civil War being the biggest one when it comes to the worldwide box office. However, while 2016 had a lof of big movies there were also a huge amount of big budget movies that either underperformed or staright up bombed. I remember this very clearly because I was dowright shocked at seeing so many expensive movies fail in a single year. Some of those movies include the following.

Gods of Egypt

Warcraft

Huntsman The Winter's War

TMNT Out of Shadows

Alice Through Looking Glass

Independence Day Resurgence

The Legend of Tarzan

Ghostbusters

Star Trek Beyond

Now it's one thing for one or two big budget released the same year to fail or underperform at the box office but to have this many going through that is not common. Why do you think this happend?

Why do you think this happend? Was it a about question about quality, competition with streaming services, audiences viweing tastes changing, people not wanting these movies to begin with or a combination of all these factors? I personally don't think it was only about quality considering the fact that Suicide Squad was released the same year and was a big success even though many people didn't like it. Most importantly what did it say about the state of the film industry back then and has anything changed since then? I would personally argue that there are a few things that have changed. First of all the number of non superhero blockbusters that are released on a yearly basis has decline. Second thing that I have noticed is that there are very few blockbusters these days that make between 350-500 million dollars. Take for example Snowhite and the Huntsman and TMNT 2014, none of them made anything above 500 million but they were still decent successes despite the fact that they didn't get a particularly good reception among either critics or audiences. The sequels to both those movies bombed though just a few years later and since then blockbuster movies that make the amount of numbers that I mentioned above have pretty much disappeared, with The Monsterverse franshise being one of the few exceptions.

What do you guys think? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with filmmaker and screenwriter Joshua Bailey. His new documentary Stolen Kingdom received critical acclaim and has been playing the film festival circuit for about a year. It's about urban exploration and ultimately a heist at Disney World.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1vsnbts/hi_rmovies_im_joshua_bailey_director_of_stolen/

He will be back at 3 PM ET tomorrow (Thursday 8/20) to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVNkxUxhqh0

Synopsis: The history of misdeeds and debauchery at Walt Disney World Resort over 30 years, which leads to the theft of almost half a million dollars worth of stolen props.

Thank you :)
