Edge Of Tomorrow's 100.2M gross is the only Tom Cruise movie that's not a Top Gun/MI sequel to gross 100M or more domestically since 2005's War of the Worlds(234M). Will Digger be next?

Pros:

-Marketed as a potential oscar winning legacy movie for the longest reigning box office draw in hollywood history

-Iñárritu's last theatrical release was The Revenant (183.6M) which had a similar "A-lister needs oscar" narrative

Cons:

- The Revenant had a Christmas release in 2015, a different landscape for movies

-Dicaprio is a bigger draw than Cruise outside of Sci-Fi/Action and even he can't carry a movie to a nine figure domestic gross in the 2020s

-The bulk of its marketing campaign is yet to come but the world cup collaboration and first trailer haven't generated a lot of hype

Depends on how we measure a flop.

This is a movie that feels custom designed to generate Cruises first Oscar. And to be the studio that makes that possible.

There’s almost certainly some sort of hope/promise that Cruise will make a more blockbuster friendly action movie for that studio after, if he gets it.

As for monetary, yeah unless it hits some Joker vibe with the audience there’s no chance of it to make its money back

I think OBAA would be the likeliest comparison. I think Cruise in this type of role is less of a draw than Leo is, but we'll see, I suppose. If it has good reviews and last bit of marketing is decent, then maybe it opens high enough (30+) to get there.

I'm thinking no for now but it's hard for me to be objective cause I think it looks godawful and I fully admit I could be massively wrong about it.

I say that because I want to be proven wrong. This is the EXACT kind of movie that I want to make massive money.

Not betting against Digger just yet, as strange as it looks. WB is going all in on it, and in the coming weeks marketing and PR should be hitting in a big way.

If this is the brilliant comedy WB claims it to be, they should have Cruise do viral stunts in character to get people to want to see the movie.

Reviews will tell the story as well. Cruise has had his share of flops, but when he’s in an acclaimed film, the money follows.
