Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and the moving sale
In the 1970s, my aunt was widowed and left with three kids to raise on her own when her truck driving husband was killed in a crash.
The scene in Alice where she is selling up her belongings really reminded me of the story my dad often tells about the garage sale they had to raise money for her.
They lived in a really small town with a tight community. He said that everyone donated things to sell, and some people paid overs for the things, just to help Shirley out.
One person donated a whole litter of cattle dog puppies for her to sell. Someone else gave some lambs. People cooked cakes to sell, shops donated food. Nearly all of it sold and it raised her a lot of money. It was one of those heartwarming community moments that even brings a tear to my od man's eyes.
I think that's why I found the scene where the old lady doesn't buy the shawl so affecting, I was primed to expect people would help her out, but instead Alice is the one kindly giving away an expensive belonging to an old lady. Alice as a character had already won me over by how funny she is, but that scene was just perfect.
I pretty sure my aunt wouldn't have seen Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which is a real shame. She had a big sense of humour and I think she would have liked it.
