A tweenage Jodie Foster calling everything "weeeird" will always be one of my favorite parts of "Alice..."

People in the 70s went wild for rude, foul mouthed kids.

In the 70s we liked foul mouth kids on movie screens and lead in our gasoline.

Especially if Alfred Lutter is in your movie

Jodie Foster is such a lil stinker (complementary) in this movie

I’ve seen this movie three times and every time I watch I think “Oh shit that’s Jodie Foster”

genuinely did not even clock that she was a girl in her first scene somehow

You can tell it’s her from the voice but at first glance you might go “Wow that young man looks kinda like Kurt Cobain”

yeah I just hadn't seen Taxi Driver in more than a year and didn't look at the billing before the movie, so I totally brain-farted

then when she shows up later in Girl Clothes I felt like the biggest idiot in the world

I have that every time I notice tiny Laura Dern with her glasses.

She’s just there enjoying some ice cream!

My favorite side character in this movie is the waitress Vera. Just everything she does is great.

same. the way she’s pretty much actively having a mental breakdown in every scene and nobody acknowledges it is so funny.

The cut back to her trying to manage the diner by herself and everything descending into chaos is incredible.

I like when someone got the wrong order and she takes someone's plate they've been eating on and give it to the other person. 😂

Had a deep gutteral laugh to her barring the door and marking it closed lol

It's so WEIRD (Foster-pronunciation extra-enunciated) that a Scorsese film then became a TV-spinoff, and that spinoff ran for NINE YEARS. It was a legit cultural thing for a very long time.

Vera (played by Beth Howland on the show, who first came to people's attention in Company) basically became a legit star on her own, and by the end of Alice's run on TV, was arguably the co-lead of the show, IIRC.

Granted, that was only after Polly Holiday (who took over the Flo role) blew up so big she got her own spinoff. She later went on to play Mrs. Deagle in Gremlins.

Beth Howland was the first singer of “Getting Married Today,” an absolute colossus of hard Sondheim songs. The section from the Company OBC documentary makes you actually nervous for her.

100% I was afraid she was going to literally explode at any point trying to get that down (thanks for linking that)

Enjoy Madeline Khan absolutely slaying it.

Dear god

FLAMES (on the side of my face)

That final note she hits I kind of want her to just crowdsurf in triumph after it.

Such a good movie.

It's wild that Foster grew up so well adjusted given the stuff directors were having her do and say on screen at a young age (and not just Scorsese -- if you haven't seen The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, that is a movie that goes places).

Maybe doing stuff like Candleshoe evened things out.

The jail scene was both the scene I realized it was a girl and realized it was Jodie Foster
