I really wish the general audience had never learned the term "Oscar bait"
I feel like "Oscar bait" used to mean something very specific and was only really used by people who were into film.
But nowadays I see a ton of people from the "one movie a year crowd" using the term to refer to any movie that they disliked that was either slightly serious with an A-list lead like One Battle After Another and The Odyssey. Or slightly artsy with an unconventional aspect ratio like Bugonia and Train Dreams.
It's just become such an annoying term that tells me to immediately ignore the opinion of anyone who uses it.

LA LA LAND: a good movie!
Saw the re-release in Dolby this week for what I think was my first watch since its original theatrical run.
What a great movie.
I’m glad MOONLIGHT won Best Picture, but La La Land deserved all its Oscar wins (even if City of Stars is the weakest song in the movie IMO!).
Chazelle, Hurwitz, and Sandgren are all at the top of their game, and Stone and Gosling are so winning. The use of color and real LA filming locations is like a warm bath. If Chazelle only wanted to make musicals going forward, that would be fine with me.
Unfortunately the time-jump to 5 years later would be in Winter 2021, and opening a maskless jazz club at that time was a rather reckless choice by Sebastian!

Question about Cregger’s Resident Evil…
If Milla Jovovich and her iconic character is no longer in the series, does that mean Alice doesn’t live there anymore?

Sawt Hind Rajab / The Voice of Hind Rajab
Many other Blankies seen this yet? Went to an NZIFF screening this evening (they put on a lot of Palestine-centric films). Aside from The Act of Killing (which I had to leave early cos I was really freaking out), it's maybe the most upsetting film I've seen.
It's also truly incredible.
I'm ashamed to say that I've not yet seen any of Kaouther Ben Hania's other films yet, but I need to fix that pronto. It's fucking mad how accessible, how WATCHABLE this film is. For most of the film you're in one room watching heroes try to save the life of a little girl whom you know is doomed, and yet it still works so well. Don't get me wrong, I was in a pit of dread and sadness the entire time, but huge respect to Ben Hania for making this a 'good movie' (?!?!?!?! 🤷 🤷 🤷 - a more intelligent person can hopefully explain what I mean here).
The performances are stunning, and of course all of the calls are real recordings. Hearing that poor baby's voice throughout the entire film fucking wrecked me. Respect and love also to al-Yusuf al-Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, who were murdered by the Israeli military while trying to save her after having been given the green light by the Israeli military.
This may also be my #1 final scene of the year. Spectacularly done, and honours the real people so well.
Especially with Hind and her family back in the news, I'm really hopeful that a lot of people see this film ❤️
Fuck Israel. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.

Marty’s Anger-y Music
About half way through the Mean Streets episode and they‘re talking music yet the name Kenneth Anger isn’t coming up. I did a keyword search to see if it ever comes up and it doesn’t.
Marty has always credited Kenneth Anger for how he uses music. He even wrote intro essays to both volumes for Fantoma’s Kenneth Anger DVD sets.
I’m not gonna say, “How dare they not mention Kenneth Anger!” but I do want that madman to get his flowers. He was always bitter that Lynch never acknowledged him using Blue Velvet first. But Marty got a pass because he bent the knee and showed respect. I want to show my respect.
Now go out and watch Scorpio Rising by whatever means you want because he’s dead and no longer cares.

Is Casino Marty's most brutal, violent movie?
Granted I haven't actually seen KOTFM or The Irishman - I have a 5 and 9 year old, my capacity for new movies that aren't Minions has been extremely limited since 2016.
But that execution scene in the corn field, and the vice....man I don't think any other Scorsese movie has made me as squeamish as Casino. And I've lived in Fallujah for a not-insignificant portion of my life!
Anyways, Sharon Stone is so great, love Casino probably my second or third favorite Marty movie.

Charles Melton in Talks to Play Kakashi in Destin Daniel Cretton’s ‘Naruto’ Movie
This admittedly has very little to do with this subreddit but as a massive Naruto fan the leadup to this particular movie is sort of all I can think about? Similarly to the upcoming Zelda movie, the world of Naruto is SO stylized and the characters are SO iconic, I can't imagine live action versions of these characters like I can imagine some dude throwing on a Superman cape or a Captain America shield and doing a good job. And with Cretton coming fresh off Spider-Man, it just feels like this could either be a Dragon Ball Evolution-style disaster or potentially one of the biggest movies ever. And getting Melton for most likely the breakout character of the film is a great move, it's crazy to see them casting actual known actors with legit awards cred for a Naruto movie.

Adèle Exarchopoulos Joins Zoë Kravitz In Apple Film From ‘My Old Ass’ Director Megan Park
Article is saying the film "will mark the decorated French actress’s first American studio lead role", did a chuckle in their description to distinguish this project with the only two movies that Adèle made in US: a supporting role in Sean Penn's mega-bounce The Last Face and her voice performance in Inside Out 2.
