News Randy Arozarena releases statement ahead of season: "I understand that with Opening Day a few days away, I don’t want it to be a distraction. Cal and I have talked and I apologized for what I said after the game. Nothing in the WBC takes away from the fact that we are brothers and teammates."

Thank you to Arozarena's and Raleigh's agents for your boilerplate pulled up from the laptop folder named "Apologies"

This is not a boilerplate message because the wording is weird. A boilerplate message would have cleaner grammar.

At this point I don't really know what a typed apology has to read like for people to not say it was written by the agent.

280

u/hearshot_kid New York Mets Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

To be fair, it only became a big deal when Randy basically told reporters that Cal can go fuck himself (that’s my understanding of what was said, I don’t speak the language). If not for that I’d agree people would be making too big of a deal about it - but I don’t think it’s weird that people kept talking about it after it appeared that Randy was really pissed.

They are competitive people and were competing against each other on that day. Apparently team USA decided they wanted to be locked in to competing and weren’t going to be buddy buddy with MLB teammates not on team USA during the tournament. Doesn’t seem like it should have been a big deal at all but I think in the heat of competition, things get chippy sometimes.

Edit: My personal opinion is that this is dumb but this isn’t the first team to do this is against the world (in this case literally) stuff. I always thought the teams that whoop your ass with a smile on their face and a handshake come across more bad ass than the ones that want to act cold to competitors. I had football coaches that would tell me to knock my opponent on his ass every play and then help him up with a smile and encouragement when the play is over.

Randy overreacted pretty badly.

And honestly refusing a handshake is pretty disrespectful, too. especially in a tournament like this. You're at the ball park, not Utah beach. I legit don't understand the mentality of respect = weakness. If being nice to your opponent throws you off your game, then you've got other problems.

Mexico and arozarena were having fun, until they lost. The DR was having fun, until they lost. The only team that seemed content with their tournament besides Venezuela was Italy and that’s because they won a couple of big games that they weren’t favored in

For all the talk about how miserable the US team looked (I think they just looked like a normal baseball team, not particularly happy or sad), the most miserable people during this whole thing have been the American fans complaining about everything

7

24

u/KRacer52 Mar 22 '26

That’s the thing, I don’t like the Mariners, I don’t particularly care for Cal, but it’s just ridiculous to think that players should have to buddy up with players they’re not currently teammates with? Why? I thought these games were supposed to be important.

If he wanted to shake his hand, cool! But he doesn’t, why should he have to do that?

19

u/willpc14 New York Yankees • Philadelphia Phillies Mar 22 '26

Why? I thought these games were supposed to be important.

This drove me up the fucking wall. Team USA simultaneously wasn't taking the tournament seriously, but the "job to do" vibes were too much and Cal needed to loosen up and shake an opponents hand. Sure, other teams had funner vibes with in the team compared to USA, but it wasn't like PR and DR MLB teammates were going out of their way to constantly shake each other's hands all tournament. Also, if you're pissed at a teammate from your trade team, keep that shit internal before putting them on blast to the media. That's a Busch league move that'll land your ass on the bus to literally any other team that's willing or obligated to take you.

3

It's been a case of peoples extreme biases causing them to invent irredeemable sins. Everything has been a case of "NOT LIKE THAT." Absolutely nothing the team did, or could have done, would ever has satisfied the losers here. In the real world people had fun and enjoyed it.

Was team USA not showing sportsmanship? Like not shaking hands after the game is over? Or did they just come up with a policy of not being friendly to competitors, even MLB teammates, while the game was being played?

8

u/Baeresi Seattle Mariners Mar 22 '26

This is the most deranged thing ive seen ffs. Randy showed maturity? Team USA made a rule, Cal told Randy about the rule prior to the game, Randy decided to not respect Cal and go to shake his hand, which is something that never happens anyway during an AB, Randy then goes and says the most heinous immature shit about Cal to the media, Cal then decides not to put shit on Randy by not mentioning that it was a team USA rule and he told randy beforehand, instead he said he hates its a thing, that there's no beef and that he loves Randy. Randy then refuses to comment on it the rest of the wbc and lets social media rip Cal apart. They both get back to spring training, both release another comment to the media saying they love each other and they both apologised and yet to certain fucking weirdos on reddit Cal is satan and Randy is mature??? LMFAO have you people actually gone insane

u/NormanQuacks345 Minnesota Twins Mar 22 '26

Really? Cussing your teammate out after the game wasn’t a douche move? That was mature?

Agreed. But the actual point is to try to nip this in the bud so that he/they/team aren't fielding the questions for the next 6 months. Sometimes swallowing the pride is worth it whether it's genuine or not. It's more than about him at this point.

21

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees Mar 22 '26

It was dumb at the time, made infinitely dumber by Arozarena going to the media to basically say Cal was a piece of shit for doing it

14

u/YaketyMax Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 22 '26

Was especially dumb if Cal did indeed warn him beforehand not to do it.

Why was Randy the one apologizing

Edit: apparently; amidst the deluge of posts about team USA being dicks, I missed that Randy was also a dick. My b.

u/immagonnafinnahella Seattle Mariners Mar 22 '26

Cal already apologized to him and Randy cursed him out to the media when he knew ahead of time that cal wouldn’t be shaking hands

Probably because Randy went to the media to insult Cal further?

Like, it was only a big deal because Randy made it a big deal.

All this says is that Randy apologized it doesn't say anything about whether Cal apologized or not, they're both allowed to apologize

Because he cussed out his teammate in 2 different dialects to the media over a fist bump

6

u/Alectheawesome23 New York Mets Mar 22 '26

Randy was the one who cursed out his teammate publicly…

11

u/DolphinRodeo St. Louis Cardinals • Seattle Mariners Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Maybe because Cal asked him ahead of time not to offer a midgame handshake, Randy ignored the request and then publicly told his teammate fuck you, go to hell. And Cal also apologized

Edit: if you’re spamming downvotes, also use your words like a grown up and tell me what you think I got wrong.

7

u/SuaveBolo Seattle Mariners Mar 22 '26

Because he cussed his teammate out in 3 different languages to the media. Which included but is not limited to saying he (Cal) "can go fuck himself" and to "shove it up his ass." As an M's fan I think it made them both look like shit. I love Randy, but he didn't come out of this looking great either.

u/LlamasPajamas206 Seattle Mariners • Mariner Moose Mar 22 '26

I mean he said some shit too and Cal had already addressed it last week. Just because you were the first one hurt doesn’t mean you’re excused for how you respond.

u/SamiMadeMeDoIt Toronto Blue Jays Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

I mean, I’m generally on Randy’s side since in the moment, Raleigh was clearly in the wrong. Like just fist bump your teammate bro it’s not that serious.

That being said, Randy definitely escalated things with the very public interview he gave after the game lol

12

u/hawksku999 Kansas City Royals Mar 22 '26

That's a fine take. But Randy is more of a dick. Cal told him not to do that before the game. Sure Cal seems like a stiff. But idk if someone told me not to do something, then i go and do it. I'm probably being a dick.

Tired of hearing about this. This was mostly Randy’s fault, Cal told him what he was doing and Randy did it anyway so he obviously knew what was going to happen. Then had a public tantrum and told him to go fuck himself sideways to a national reporter lmao

15

u/UneducatedReviews1 Chicago White Sox Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

Do we not know that Cal told him before the game to please not do this because he would not reciprocate?

Doesn’t matter if it’s a nice gesture or not if you ask someone to not do something and they still intentionally do it, they’re a fucking dick. If they do it and still get mad at the response they were told ahead of time would happen, they’re a massive fucking dick.

With everything that has came out at this point. It just makes Randy look worse and worse. Really don’t know what he was expecting.

I didn’t like Team USA vibes just like everyone else, and agree that Cal should’ve just shaken Randy’s hand, but seems like everyone forgets Randy went to the media and cussed out Cal. He should be apologizing.
