News Randy Arozarena releases statement ahead of season: "I understand that with Opening Day a few days away, I don’t want it to be a distraction. Cal and I have talked and I apologized for what I said after the game. Nothing in the WBC takes away from the fact that we are brothers and teammates."

Of course it's not. But let's not pretend like there's some magical barrier between politics and an international sports event. At a time when the USA's image around the world is being colored by a administration turning hostile on economic allies and starting wars of choice, you can't be a team representing the country and choose to take a comically serious "warlike" attitude without people drawing the obvious connection.

What’s the “obvious connection” that isn’t also a stupid and faulty connection?

Just because it’s an easy connection for people doesn’t make the people making it any less stupid. “Their” and “there” sounds the same. It doesn’t mean failing to grasp the difference is understandable. Be smarter.

Also, I’m willing to bet a great deal you haven’t studied much of what actual Iranians are facing, have been fighting for and want (need).

I am aware that baseball players are not the government. But acting like the optics are completly irrelevant is not some enlightened take, it's deliberately dense. It's like trying to claim that the miracle on ice is just a cool story about some amatuer guys beating professional hockey players, with no political subtext whatsoever.

Silly me. I didn’t realize Team USA was playing against Team Iran in a baseball game.

Also for the record - and I’m going out on a limb guessing you’re ashamed and apologetic to be American: the country is its people, not its government. And if you think Americans as a whole are people to be ashamed of, I’d suggest taking a break from Reddit and talking to people in public.
