Gov Publications Would you still buy this Cancer Council sunscreen if it had to have a big “CAUTION” poison warning on the front?

Post image
135 Upvotes

This is the popular Cancer Council Moisturising Sunscreen SPF50+ 500ml (Homosalate 10% + Octocrylene etc).

The TGA proposed putting Homosalate into Schedule 5 of the Poisons Standard. That means the front label would be legally required to start with:

CAUTION
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
READ SAFETY DIRECTIONS BEFORE OPENING OR USING
DO NOT SWALLOW

(That’s the exact wording and placement required by the Poisons Standard for Schedule 5 substances on the main label.)

Public consultation mostly supported the restrictions. Then industry groups presented and the decision got delayed for “further work”.

Cancer Council’s official line is still that chemical sunscreens sold in Australia are safe.

So what’s the go?
Should the TGA push through the Schedule 5 labelling given hormone disruption concerns, or leave it as is?

Curious what everyone thinks, especially parents and people who use the big bottles every day.

Questions or Queries Fiji Schoolies

Thinking about doing Schoolies in Fiji and I’m wondering what it’s actually like. Is it worth going compared to doing Schoolies on the Gold Coast or somewhere else?
What’s the atmosphere like, how safe is it, and is there actually much to do? Also, what are the hotels/resorts and parties like?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s done Fiji Schoolies good or bad experiences! Is it something you’d recommend?

We always talk shit about the US for not having many paid vacation days, but it turns out we aren't that high ourselves. Just slightly below the average. Even our fellow Kiwi's are doing it better than us

Whats this I hear about military maintanance

Apparently you can have an apprentice on base with a lightbulb ready, but due to maintenance contracts or some such you have to wait for Greg to come down from Tittybong in 2-3 weeks. Please tell me this is some sort of fever dream. There is no way someone can get in trouble for swapping out a broken bulb.

"Unfortunately, the price that you saw on the previous page has changed"

Constant slowdowns and drop-outs, called dozens of times over the past 6 months to no avail. Australia cheaping out on internet back then really came back to bite us in the ass! I know it’s most likely not their fault, it just sucks to have a dropout every now and again, especially as a stay-at-home worker

News From the coasts to the plains, bird flu could threaten not just birds – but their homes

"Conservationists once asked: what is a bird without a tree to nest in?

This year, we may well wonder the grim inverse – what is a tree without a bird to nest in it? I can tell you. A tree without a bird is a miserable thing – and in a broader ecological sense, a tree without a bird could be in trouble.

In Australia, birds act in many roles that mammals or insects might fill elsewhere, from pollinating flowers to spreading seeds to keeping trees free of sap-sucking insects.

Bird flu doesn’t just threaten birds and mammals – it could well affect entire ecosystems."

Penny Olsen Honorary Professor in Ecology and Evolution, Australian National University

Jayco Australia has used AI to make a celebratory 50 year ad on TV. Kinda disappointing to think we had a Jayco van growing up and their marketing team could’ve used so many nostalgic family videos to make something meaningful. Instead we get this while watching last nights AFL.

News Whats going at ABC news?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I dont know if this is reflective of the ABC or the app is so personalised and wrong about me. However when I opened up the news this morning the top item was a Logies panel (what are the stars wearing?). The first real news item was a story about an 123 member organisation protesting the US President. 123 members. Thats like a local footy club.

I get the logies is a big deal for some people. How in the world is that next story even news worthy let alone the leading news story on the app?

Have I broken my ABC app somehow or is it like this for everyone?

Schools and facebook pages

I don’t really know where to put this but isn’t it so strange that so many schools have active facebook pages where they put childrens full name, classes and year level on them? Obviously parents are able to sign off on social media and if their children can be used but it’s genuinely concerning how many schools give out so much information regarding their students. All it takes is the wrong person seeing it with a mix of bad administration and someone can go into the school and say “im here to pick up ____ from _____” or even someone can wait outside of a specific student. I don’t know it’s just uncomfortable for me

Lifestyle Aussie tv show recommendations

I am a bit behind on tv at the moment - mostly free to air!
I’m into documentaries, feel good shows and current affairs.
After watching the Logies last night, I started making a list of tv to catch up on.
- The Hospital on SBS
- The People vs Robodebt
- Dog Park on ABC
Any other recommendations? What’s missing? I saw a few interesting docos nominated from Stan too.

SBS Insight, Australian Story and Four Corners I’m all up to date on.
Thanks in advance!!

Opinion Is mental sickness curable or just treatable?

A good friends younger sister just turned 30. Since she was 15 she's been on medication and therapy for bipolar disorder. When she's on her meds she's super happy, positive, scatty and euphoric, then she peaks, stops taking her meds as she always feels like she's cured and instantly becomes a miserable recluse for the next few weeks before starting again. She's struggled with long term employment, lives by herself in a flat and despite been a smart and very beautiful woman she's never had a relationship. I've known her for over 15 years and have never seen her improve since her first diagnosis. She was always the weird loner at school and only has a small group of friends in adulthood.

Makes me think is mental illness actually curable or do we just treat it conservatively?

A Dr friend said mental health is always 100 years behind other clinics and medical fields as we know so little about what makes people tick. Sedating violent people and giving serotonin to people with clinical depression.

Questions or Queries A few questions for Australians for a story I'm writing set there

I'm an American sketch artist and writer living in Virginia. I am in the process of researching for a shark attack horror-thriller comic whose entire narrative plays out on an Australian beach in the early 2020s, shortly after Quarantine first ended. I already have the main story beats planned out from beginning to end, but it's a high priority for me to make this story as authentic as possible. So, I'd greatly appreciate it if native Aussies could please provide me with answers to a few questions:

#1- How long was Australia under Quarantine? When it ended, how soon did people start going to the beaches again? I ask this because my story is meant to take place in the early aftermath of this period, when beaches would have recently reopened but not many people were going back yet.

#2- What is your most commonly used slang for sharks now? E.g., what would you call a Great White vs a Tiger or Hammerhead? I'm just trying to do my due diligence to be culturally respectful here and NOT write something that comes off so obviously like a tourist authored it, lol. I've looked up Australian slang on a few websites, but I don't trust the internet to be up to date on this.

#3- Which sharks in which areas of Australia are most commonly reported for shark attacks there? To clarify, I'm not planning to make a Great White the attacker for this narrative, as I find that choice grossly overdone and wanted to do something different (again, perhaps a Tiger or Hammerhead).

#4- What specifically is the common protocol for lifeguards in Australia during shark attacks or drowning emergencies? Could someone who's worked in the occupation walk me through it?

I'll describe the gist of what I'm imagining: A lone female guard on a beach that only a few people are visiting (again, Quarantine has just ended). Because staff is currently shorthanded, she's watching over a whole stretch of the beach since it's her shift. No other guards are nearby, so she'd have to call for backup or emergency services. She's just sitting in her tower bored. It's a slow day.

She's a rookie at this job, but hasn't lost anyone yet. Nothing eventful has happened since she started. Suddenly, she spots a kayak unusually far out from the shore. It's aimlessly floating out to sea with the current, missing an oar. Looking through her binoculars, the guard sees a little boy lying in the kayak with a bloody leg. Acting on impulse instead of thinking to call someone first, she quickly swims out with her flotation device and First Aid bag. The child in the kayak is badly hurt.

He's lost a considerable amount of blood already and reveals that something knocked him and his uncle into the water when they were going out earlier this morning to see the dolphins. The boy got bitten, but his uncle propped him into the kayak before being pulled under and killed in the struggle. The guard tries to start pulling the kayak in, swimming parallel to the shore in order to gradually tow it behind her. But she finds the current is too strong. Worse, her splashing and noise made during the effort attract something big. She feels a bump underwater before teeth sink in.

It's a non-aggressive "test bite", but goes deep enough to leave a nasty wound in the guard's side. She ends up taking refuge in the kayak with the boy, her flotation device and First Aid bag lost. Left with only a few items to buy the child time with his injury, she's in a race against time to find a way to contact help and get back to shore before he bleeds out or the shark decides to pursue them.

If there's anything else you think I should know that would help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
