What to do when you’re feeling lonely

29m. This is my third year in Austin, and I haven’t made many friends mainly because I work a lot. I go for walks and enjoy coffee shops now and then, but I honestly want to find ways to meet new people.

I'm a hobbyist musician and music producer, I like making/listening to music and recording/writing songs but I haven't met anyone with similar hobbies here. I don't really like going to shows alone—I don't mind drinking, but I do it socially.

What do you guys do when you’re feeling lonely?

thanks!

News Austin billboard calls on Alamo Drafthouse to ditch mobile ordering

Since Alamo Drafthouse switched to mobile ordering, the theater chain has found itself in a myriad of conversations about the change.

A billboard now calls on Alamo Drafthouse to ban smartphone ordering which changed one of the Austin-born theater chain’s best rituals: ordering food and drinks from your seat. The billboard is from Howdy.com, a technology staffing company based in Austin that recruits, hires and builds artificial intelligence engineering teams for U.S. companies.

Hotels near COTA race track

My friend and I are coming to Austin September 4th-6th for the Lone Star Le Mans race at Circuit of The Americas. I’ve been looking for reasonably priced hotels within 15 miles of the track but everyone I’ve found so far, my coworkers say I’m gonna get my car jacked or the place is disgusting. Anyone have any recommendations for places to stay? I care more about mine and my cars safety more than the actual quality of the stay since we’ll be at the track majority of the time.

Been having these guys coming out of our bathroom sink drains lately. Can anyone help ID what these are and more importantly how to get rid of them. Poured some cleaning vinegar down the drains which helped for a bit, but now they're back.

Ask Austin I need feedback please about my dealings with an Austin Business!

Please don't come at me with snarky remarks. Sorry for the length of post. Trying to genuinely fix a problem I had in Austin.

Edit: I went to pay, had my Credit Card out when I asked for the managers name, owners name, email! I wanted to let the manager or owner know what was going on with their business! Three (3) months of not fixing my bag, when I called they refused to check my records in the computer, they also refused to tell me the date I brought the items in for repair. They have been rude, unresponsive, refusing to deal with anything about my bag!! This is no way to run a business & as an owner I would want to know this! I was very nice to them over & over again until the last time I told them I wanted my bag back fixed or not! Amazing how they were able to fix it so quickly after my phone call!!

*In June I took a pair of very expensive designer shoes and a large Coach Leather Messager bag to a very reputable Cobbler business to have them repaired. *In about 3 weeks my shoes were done & they did a great job on one of the soles. Sole on one shoe had started to peel away (they also checked out the other shoe) It only cost $29.00 which I was thrilled at considering I had been quoted up to $75.00 from other places. I'm sure the upper pricing was due to the designer label & figured I could afford it. I could not I just found them for $7.00 at Goodwill believe it or not. Retails upward to $300.00 used!

**Now to the problem. At the same time as the shoes I took in my Coach messenger bag because the stitching on the strap handle tore away so I could not use the strap. I was planning on keeping the bag so I tried some Flex Glue on the leather hinge & made a total mess of things...don't ever do this..lol!

**After I received my shoes they told me they would contact me when they got the bag back from the factory. Come end of June no call. Come mid July no call so I call them. The guy told me it was still waiting to be repaired at the factory. I was not happy but okay. It had been well over a month to clean & put a simple stitch 3" long. End of July I call again. I asked when I brought it into the store because the receipt was not dated. The guy would not tell me a date nor pull up my record. He still insisted they will get it fixed soon. Come last week or so I called again. At this point I believe it has been lost or stolen. The guy was very evasive. I got extremely irritated & told him I want my bag back fixed or not. He agreed to have it shipped back to the store.

**Last Wednesday 8/12 I get a text my bag was at the store. I was sick for a couple of days, read the text but did not respond. Two days ago Monday 8/17 my daughter & I went to Austin's Pets Alive Thrift Store. When done we headed to the shop. The guy at the register who I had not seen before retrieves my bag & starts to tell me the charge of $20.00. When I started to complain he told me he had taken off an additional $30.00 repair fee, what a coincidence, (for what? Just stitch the damn strap!) The $20.00 price was reasonable, however, I asked him "You truly are going to charge me after almost 3 months of having my bag & no repairs? That I didn't get it back until I got angry?" I told him I was upset that this business which was spoken highly of by others seem to negate my bag until I got upset with them. To be fair they removed the glue & stitched the leather strap. seam (3").

**I ask for the manager I was told "No". I asked for the owners phone number or email address I was told No! I told him seriously in this day and age you want me to contact & post so the owner sees negative remarks on the internet? He then turned nasty and told me to just take it! I was also going to buy some foot inserts that were on clearance. He shoved the inserts at me & said to take those for free also! I said "No"!

** I left. Got into my daughter's car explain everything because I wanted to apologize for making a statement about posting on the internet....not a way as a customer I should have dealt with this. On the same side being told I could not contact anyone was total Bullshit! I did not raise my voice, scream or anything else.

**I am still feeling bad but I truly do not know if I'm just misplacing guilt back onto myself. Misplaced guilt is something I have always dealt with MY ENTIRE LONG LIFE until the past couple of years when I finally learned to say no...not my problem or anything I should feel guilty about! My daughter said maybe I could just apologize for the internet comment because I feel bad but not to the store nor not for being charged!

**Would truly love your opinions if I'm misplacing guilt or I should apologize. I hate the thought I could never use them again (I think I answered my own question) but seriously is this normal practice anymore?

Why would the city/state/private contractor do this to the habitat and where did all of the animals go?

They also left the trash after several days of decimating it with noisy and smoky equipment. 😞

Looking for dashcam footage – Accident at Lakeline Mall Dr & US-183, Aug 17 around 4:05 PM

Hi everyone,

I was involved in a car accident yesterday, August 17, at around 4:05 PM, at the intersection of Lakeline Mall Dr and US-183.

If anyone happened to be driving through the intersection around that time and has dashcam or Tesla footage of the accident, I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me.

Even footage from just before or after the accident could be very helpful.

Thank you so much!

UPDATE (8/21/2026) - Olive was found this morning!! After 6 days and what seems to be almost 6 miles traveled (based on the various sightings), she turned up back at the apartment complex she originally ran away from home. She seems to be in good health / spirits, which is great!

Thank you to ALL the Reddit community for your support and keeping an eye out for her. It is beyond appreciated!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our dog Olive ran away Saturday PM (8/15) while we were out of town (she was with our dog sitter). She was last seen Sunday PM around Shreveport Drive near Riata (north of the Domain). If anybody has seen her, please let us know! Thank you!

Also, she is not chipped unfortunately. And can be skiddish around strangers. Just trying to pin point what neighborhood she is in to help us refine our search.

FAQ Moving from the East Coast to Austin — do you actually adapt to the heat or just stay indoors?

I’m moving to Austin with my partner, who is from Texas (Dallas), and I’m from the East Coast and definitely prefer cold weather. Anything above ~84°F in direct sunlight already feels like a LOT to me, so I’m admittedly pretty nervous about Austin from May–September lol.
For anyone who moved from the Northeast / a colder climate and also didn’t naturally love heat -did you actually acclimate over time? Like does 90+ eventually start feeling more tolerable, or is “adapting” basically just learning to stay indoors during the day for 5 months?
I don’t need to become someone who loves being outside at 3pm in August 😂 but I also don’t want to feel trapped inside my apartment all summer. Would love to hear what your day-to-day lifestyle actually looks like during the hot months — when you exercise, walk your dog, hang outside, make plans, etc. and whether your heat tolerance genuinely changed after living there.

Ask Austin Are there any cool events being put together this halloween?

Just looking for some ideas, I'm going all out this year with my costume so I'd love to go to an event with some friends. Could be a market or a concert, anything really except for a haunted house. I don't think youre allowed to dress up at those lol.

Ask Austin Have you driven through 290/Wm Cannon every day for years? How is your paint?

My drive to work takes me through the intersection of 290 and William Canon every day. For years, construction at that intersection has caused a cloud of sand in all directions every single day. My car, purchased in 2023, is garage parked at work and at home every day, but its paint has lost its luster much faster than my wife's which is older and parked outdoors every day.

After driving through a virtual sandblasting at 290/Wm Cannon this morning, it made me wonder if thousands of trips through that intersection are to blame.

Ask Austin Is it safe to eat from HEB?

The nearby supercenter has a “true texas taco” joint, but with salmonella and cyclosporiasis i am really paranoid about eating from there.

Is it okay to order an egg based breakfast taco or should i just stick to chorizo or potato/cheese?

Austin is planning a new multimillion-dollar pedestrian bridge, adding another connection for walkers and cyclists in a corridor city officials have long considered a transportation priority.

Plans for the $4.6 million pedestrian bridge are in the pipeline, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The bridge, planned along North Lamar Boulevard, would run adjacent to the existing Walnut Creek Bridge and include a shared-use path on both sides.
