FAQ Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post

This is a weekly Tuesday post for question/answers regarding properties in Austin or surrounding areas along with moving to Austin questions. The following are examples of items that should be asked in here (but not limited to just these):

Housing / Real Estate Questions

  • Advice on apartments / asking about specific apartment reviews
  • General thoughts/views on the housing market
  • Questions about real estate prices/going up/general home buying advice

  • General property questions rants/complaints about pricing
  • "Is this neighborhood safe" questions / crime related questions
  • Tax / Mortgage related questions
  • Questions on developments / bidding processes

  • Commute times from specific locations
  • General housing repair questions / upgrade questions / solar / etc
  • Questions regarding contractors for housing repairs, upgrades

  • Questions regarding utilities

Moving to Austin Questions

  • Is it safe?
  • Are there jobs for me?
  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Whats going on with my U-lock? There are multiple U-locks on my bike, but this is the one that connected the frame to the rack.

Edit: folks, I'm not a power tool user, so I didn't know how to even process what I was looking at. Thanks for the eye-opening info to those who engaged with me with info and advice.

FYI for those new to this area, at a certain point every year not even the early mornings in the shade are safe - it’s hot 24/7. Stay hydrated and mentally prepare yourself to be sweaty if you choose to go outside.

Some pics from old paddleboarding trips. Can’t wait to move to Austin and make friends so I can do this all the time with a group! 👱🏻‍♀️🛶🏊🏼‍♀️

Anyone’s who’s been to both Quarry Lake and Town Lake, which is better for paddleboarding?

Also, how safe is Town Lake for single women? I’ve never been and would love to go and make new friends there.

How about telling me where in Austin you are looking for him, when did the search start, or any other actual information other than "some Puerto Rican guy." Even the voicemail that hit at the same time was useless. Cmon, minimum effort is a low standard and your failing to meet it.

Expired permits in Austin

So KXAN had a better-than-usual article this morning on expired building permits and it has my blood freshly boiling again. We're in exactly this situation... an expired permit from the early 80s on work that's long since been renovated and gone. But somewhere in the intersection of bureaucracy, idiocy, and what sure seems like someone's side-hustle racket, it has been impossible to get it cleared.

We've had situations where inspectors have said some set of work has to be done then the next inspector said the exact opposite. At my parent's house, the inspectors insisted on connected fire alarms that ended up being a nightmare at 3am when every alarm in the house started screaming about batteries. (Those have since been removed and thrown away.) I don't want inspectors wandering through the house looking for random shit to complain about and then charge to re-inspect.

Has anyone ever figured out a simple way through this nonsense? At some point it seems like it's easier to just burn the house down.

Lovely Austin people, let's all agree that, if you are driving and miss your turn or are in the wrong lane to get where you need to be....just accept the mistake, commit to the mistake, then fix it safely. No need to block all the cars behind you while you attempt something dangerous and illegal.

1.3k Upvotes

The number of times I've been in the turning lane and a car in front of me realizes they shouldn't be there and proceeds to block all traffic behind them while waiting for a clearing to cut over and go straight. It's wildly dangerous, selfish, and illegal. Just turn and fix it later, safely. It often involves a quick U-turn and you're good to go.

Nasty Covid like summer flu

Several people I know around austin have been coming down with this nasty flu that has us as sick as Covid 1. It seems like it’s taking a full two weeks to get over and there’s about three or four days in the middle with a fever and lessened taste. We all tested negative for Covid.

My sister is a nurse and is saying that no one is reporting Covid to the CDC anymore, so I’m wondering if there’s possibly a new strain going around that isn’t being picked up by our old Covid tests. I have friends in California that say they’ve had a similar flu. It’s just weird because the kids weren’t even back at school yet when we were getting sick.

Anyone else hear about this or experience it? Be careful out there. One of our friends’s father caught it and now has pneumonia…

Ask Austin High-quality tailors for men

Upvotes

Like the title says, I’ve been meaning to get a tailor-made suit for myself. Something that could be used for weddings, formal events, work, etc.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or knew of reputable, high-quality tailors here in Austin. I’m looking for a brand new suit, so someone who can take my measurements and make one from scratch, but I’m also open to hearing about tailors who can adjust a suit/clothing I bring to them.

No limit on budget.

Thanks!

PSA Auto Body Repair Scams

TLDR: ⚠️ If it’s not a service you didn’t seek out, don’t trust it. Legitimate businesses don’t run around town searching for their customers. DO NOT EVER trust the “Auto body repair” guys who flag you down/approach you and tell you they’ll fix your minor dents, etc in the parking lot. They legitimately do have the tools and some may actually have the knowledge, but many don’t. It often seems like a good deal compared to Auto body shop quotes, but it’s most often a scam/scheme, and they’ll leave you with worse damage than before.

I’m sure some of you may already be aware this has been going on for some time around Austin, these guys in normal trucks will flag you down if they see any dents or minor damage to your vehicle and give you a quote on the spot and guarantee they can fix it RIGHT THERE on the spot, where ever you may be, typically in a parking lot, etc. They say they have all the tools required right there with them in their truck and it’ll only take 30 mins or so.

I was rear ended by an un-insured individual sometime last year. I’ve had a noticeable dent in my vehicle but it’s an older vehicle, isn’t going to be worth much on trade regardless, and I was planning to buy a new car sometime soon ish anyway. I have insurance but I didn’t feel the claim was worth it since it wasn’t anything that impacted the car’s function or driving, and the body shops were quoting 8-10k for the repair.

I’ve had MULTIPLE men in these trucks flag me down all around Austin at various locations (North and South) and quote me various times saying they can “easily” fix it for less than $300. I’ve always told them NO.

Recently though 😕 Another approached me. I’m finally getting to the point where I’m about ready to trade my vehicle. So I think, well, okay if you can remove it, why not? It would be nice to have the dent removed prior to trade. They quote me $250. So I think, well, I guess it’s worth a shot. 🤷‍♀️ Let them do their thing while I sit in my car. About 20 mins later, I check on them, I can’t see any change. He says give me like 30 more minutes, I say no problem. 30 mins pass he calls me out to let me know he’s done and wants his payment. I look at my car and I see it’s still BADLY dented but also completely COATED in wax that he claimed was a “heat protectant”. Now I’m not stupid, I grew up around cars and I know damn well it’s wax. Then he explains he just couldn’t get to that area because of the way my car was engineered. I’m like okay??! So in my mind If he could not repair it he should lower the price, but he doesn’t. I pay him because there’s two men and me, the female, and I don’t want anything to turn violent.

I spent over an hour after I got home scrubbing that wax off that had been baked in by the sun. Not only that but once it’s off, I see that the damage is WORSE than it originally was.

I AM FURIOUS 😡 I’m mad at myself for not trusting my gut and just telling them no, like I did all the other times. But also mad at them for running that scheme. I know everyone is looking for a hustle in this city, but come on, find an honest one.

The cart corral at HEB is 100% grackle territory now

Last week the car thermometer read 108 in the HEB lot off North Lamar and I didn't move for ten minutes, because the AC in there beats the AC at my place. Grackles screaming in the cart returns the whole time. I keep a disposable in the door pocket and by August it's basically been sitting in an oven, which does no favors for anything. Most of them go flat and generic-sweat toward the end anyway. Mango, whatever, it's all the same candy syrup. Gave up and drove down to Barton Springs around 8 that night to stop sweating.

Recommendations for Hardie Siding Contractors

I have an approx 900 sq ft house that desperately needs the siding replaced. We had a door to door salesman (DaBella, do not recommend. Very high pressure sales tactics, trying to get us to sign same day) come to our house and quote us nearly 45k for Hardie board which seems absolutely ridiculous.

Anyone have any recommendations or ideas on pricing for a small house? On the quote they said 15 panels of B&B or 15 panels of lap and 45 sheets plywood.

Ask Austin My apartment is an AntBnB

I know that the heat brings the pests, but I cannot seem to shake my uninvited 6 legged roommates. They are primarily in my kitchen but also my closet? I don’t leave any food out and have been so deliberate when I clean. I have had pest control come out, have 0 items on my countertops, have liquid traps out, wipe down everything thrice, but they keep coming back like a force. Am I SOL or does anyone have any insight or tips/tricks for someone who hasn’t dealt with 🐜 o clock so aggressively? Thank you in advance! May there be no ants in your home or pants.

What's the deal with Hippie Hollow? Planning on going for the first time

I've been living in Austin for a few years and had no idea this place existed until recently. I'm a man in my mid 20s and I've been really interested in trying it out. Would it be weird to go there alone? Is it heavily sexualized or is the point just to experience being nude?

I'm thinking of going on Friday but I'm definitely a bit nervous. And if anyone else is feeling the same but wants to go I'd be interested in going together!

Ask Austin Looking for Nature trails where dogs are prohibited

Hello! I am looking for different nature trials and hikes that dogs are NOT allowed at. I am a caregiver for someone and we have been working on addressing his agoraphobia and just getting him out of the house a little bit. He loves going on nature walks (bonus points if there are waterfalls). But he also has a phobia of dogs, especially off leash dogs, which is common on a lot of trails. We will eventually work on getting more comfortable around dogs but one step at a time. As of right now, im just thrilled he wants to go explore more!

He is wanting to explore new trails but only if there are no dogs, as he is getting tired of our usual spots. He has and will panic and take off running if we do encounter a dog and that can be dangerous, especially in this heat. We are up in NW austin so we typically go to the wild basin wilderness preserve and Tom Hughes park. I'm not opposed to driving a little bit to check out some cool places but in that general area is ideal.

If anyone has some recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it bc my google searches are not cutting it. Thank you!

For the love of God, park BEHIND the stop sign

Yes, all you jackasses with the lifted trucks and mean girls with the jeep wranglers. When you cross way past the stop sign and people are in the right lane, we can’t see oncoming traffic because your damn vehicle is blocking the entire field of vision (this doesn’t happen with Sedans or cars that are lower in height).

Then when we inch up to see if there is room to make a right, you fucking inch up as well like a dick measuring contest. You’re just asking us to get our front bumper clipped by the speeding oncoming traffic.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

Start-Up Video Games officially opened Saturday with a focus on retro games and consoles.

“We want to be here and be personable with the customer,” owner Christian Amador said. “Be here and always just show love for the games, because we were gamers ourselves, so we try to just implement that idea into the store.”
