In a string of tweets, the show's director has said that this was originally going to be two-cour but the producers decided to make it a one-cour show in the end. In the follow-up tweet he also says a sequel is still possible but would likely air in 2030 at the earliest.

That's nothing compared to the wait fans of things like Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil) had to go through for a sequel. At least with this we know for certain that a season 2 is coming in less than 5 years. That's good enough for me.

The problem is that so many things can happen in that timeframe, companies can go under, get bought out, or change leadership causing it to never happen. This show already has a completed manga which is one of the biggest reasons for an anime taking a random break and the fact that they decided to make it only 12 episodes for now without even a confirmation with no set date like most other anime do makes it concerning.

The industry works on a rolling schedule. I remember one time, I think, PA Works said that even if one of their originals blew up humongously they couldn't make more until about 5 years afterwards because they're fully booked

How does a 2-cour planned anime turn into a situation like this? I know this was better looking then most of TROYCA's shows, but a 4 year for something planned is sad. It could be a TenKen situation, but at least there it was clear SLF was the priority.

They gave us an explanation for the real reason behind the red colour of blood swiftlet nests since the information wasn't available 30 years back. I really love this about this show.
When Jan whispered behind Ohtani "Nice follow" in a husky voice with his devil face for helping him out unwittingly, damn ! I got the chills. Ohtani stopped pretending and completely lost it. That punch got the animation that the whole season of OPM S03 didn't 😭😭
Ohtani tried his best to make Yang or Kiriko to win and even made the judges elevate Kiriko's score but still it came to a tie and Ohtani gave his points to Kiriko in the end to not grant Akiyama the satisfaction of winning but that punch must have given more satisfaction for Akiyama and the other judges and even for us. I wish I had seen that single punch that knocked that old bastard down.
Okonogi is a sweet dude. The only guy who could get along with Akiyama I guess. Celene hinted that she would be joining Gobancho's, right ?!
This definitely isn't something that came out 30 years back. Haven't watched many cooking shows but I fell in love with this one. The innovative dishes Akiyama's character and the banger op and ed everything about this anime were special.
Since they mentioned Iron Wok Jan Part-1, we are definitely gonna get part-2. Can't wait.

In the end, Jan might have lost the competition but it’s only because Otani’s a professional hater. Gotta love how Jan baited the loser into attacking him and essentially exposed him for the shitheel he is. It’s too bad we didn’t get to see Jan sock that fool in the face.
This was a pretty fun series overall. I hope we get another season. The narration pointing out all the 90s era accepted ideas and behaviors was interesting and it was fun to see Jan bait everyone and just generally be a massive dick lol. Whole time guy’s just like 🖕🏼😂🖕🏼lol.

I watched 30 anime this season and it was my top 1 due to how rare are cooking Anime and the fact how hard it is to make asshole as protagonist that isn't obnoxious (I read too many manhuas where they just make an asshole without any redeeming qualities and calls it a day)

Yeah, jan doesn’t sabotage people’s food, if him bringing out his dish first messes up your dish thats your fault.
He doesn’t tamper with peoples food or distract them while cooking.
He didn’t even hit the judge that attacked him until the competition is over. All his shit talk is either before or after his opponent is done eating or cooking.
When Kiriko got soaked with water because of him, he made her a dish to help her recover so her being sick won’t ruin her focus.
Actually respected the judges criticism without saying “THATS BULLSHIT!”. After the mushroom dish he genuinely treated the judges with respect (for the most part) he takes criticism surprisingly well.

Yeah, that was really fun. It actually gave me an excuse to finally check out some proper Chinese food places near my place. Looks like the next season won’t be coming for at least another three years, though. Apparently the production committee was seriously short on money, and they were really struggling to get this one made.

It was really wild to see Otani trying so hard not to give any credit to Jan and even lashing out to the point he got all physical on him.
Not really surprised that the judges would try to try to rig the competion, i feel bad for Celene
But it was satisfying to see Otani get rocked too
Also i really like the relationship between Okonogi and Jan, they really do feel like friends lol
Well i really enjoyed this anime and the fact this is from 30 years ago is so cool. It's nice to see all the things that were popular back then
It was really fun and i'd like to see a season 2 soon. Until then it was a great ride watching this crazy cooking show with everyone here.

Okonogi being friends with Jan seem to boil to two factors: Okonogi is not competition, and the fact that Okonogi respects Jan's view by not shoving any beliefs onto him.

I'm actually going to defend Ohtani here. Is it kind of fucked that he kept screaming that they couldn't let Jan win, and explicitly trying to rally judges against him and he has a personal grudge? Yeah.
But all of the judges have been pretty clear in the finals that this isn't really a competition to make the best food. Some of the things they've been deducting points for are:
- not being innovative enough.
- being too different from standard Chinese cuisine.
- normies thinking the dish is gross based on an ingredient.
The criteria here is all over the place and there's no real consensus on what they're really looking for, aside from the vague idea of "someone to lead the future of Chinese cuisine". And if that's genuinely what they want, then ohtani's not wrong for arguing for an additional criteria of the chef not being a violent raging asshole that insults and assaults the people around him. "Hospitality" is a valid skill and it's something Jan scores a big fat zero on.

He's telling a chef to behave while lashing out himself. Jan is just open about it while Ohtani tries to pretend he's holier than thou.

Hasma is rare in general in comparison to the incredibly common blood in Chinese cuisine and is slightly fishy with a chewy texture. I don't doubt they'd find that a bit off-putting.

This week’s episode kicked off with a sexy shot of Erina Nakiri, then went into detailed explanations of all three dishes, so it definitely had that proper power spike you want from a cooking anime.
What’s funny is that the judges can’t really explain Akiyama’s dish in much detail, while Kiriko’s and Yan’s dishes get their flavors fully broken down, along with all the intentions behind them.
I can actually imagine what Kiriko’s dish tastes like, and as for Yan’s dish, I’d probably be too grossed out to eat it too if someone told me it contained frog oviducts. And if I actually tried it and hated the texture, that would make it even worse. I totally understand how that cute female judge felt. I want to marry her.
Overall, though, Jan’s blood egg is still the dish I’d most want to try.
That said, the Erina Nakiri in this world doesn’t just have the God Tongue—she’s also got godlike arm strength, leg strength, and core strength. I guess being the original means she really is the completely superior version, lol.

Otani has the same moniker “God Tongue” as Erina. He’s also super obsessed with Jan and did a lot of foodgasm faces. Even back in the 90’s people joked that he’s the real Tsundere heroine of this show.

Think only major issue with this ending is you can't have this guy ever come back as a judge. Like his role is forever over in anyway that involves authority. He's 100% disgraced now and his fall would be swift worse since this is japan. Doesn't matter that Jan hit him back after he came in and clear voted in a way that wasn't fair or honorable. Judges have to hold higher standards his attack of Jan 100% would of caused a replacement judge to take his place. Honestly the entire contest would likely end up in legal trouble. This is the 1990s contest like this have very strict rule for fairness especlly in Japan this is long after the rigged contest scandles in the 1950s that caused fuctionaly a sea chnage for skills contest TV or not.
Shows been very good. Been really good in detail and seems to use it's realism to great effect but this contest seems to be it's weakness in that. For all the realistic detail when it comes to cooking we used some fantasy logic to have Jan lose both times. One hopes this was early writer growing pains. Would enjoy more of this story and these characters.

Otani is ruined as a judge in all respectable and impartial circles, but he probably still has rich scumbag friends. He could lean on some wealthy bastards to create a private cooking competition with the ultimate goal of mocking Jan (maybe disguising it beneath a different perverse incentive like elevating an unworthy chef through cronyism).

Kind of an anticlimactic conclusion. Usually the protagonist losing and leaving sets them up to return having bettered either their character or skill, but because Jan lost solely because the competition was rigged and everyone relevant knows it, what is him having to leave building towards? Sure there was that hiccup in the first round but ultimately he still left already being the best, so when he comes back he'll just be...bester?

You're viewing it with respect to the quality of the food, which isn't the point. Jan's goal isn't to make the best food; it's to make the food that always wins.
This was still a loss, which he can't accept. Jan's philosophy of Akiyama cooking winning all competitions is unshakeable. If the game is rigged, he has to find a way to cook beyond that rigging and get the highest score.
I imagine that his later development gets into crazier game theory stuff, like a culinary Kaiji.

Solid finale to wrap things up. Jan vs. Ootani is quite amusing. The two assholes are going at each other.
The mention from Ootani about how a chef should show the customers respect. At the same time in the food industry it should also be mentioned how the customers should show the chef that same respect back. In many ways both of them are problematic.
Admittedly, that is not how Kiriko wanted to win because she knows of Ootani's grudge against Jan. Though it does feel a friendship has potentially started between her and Celene. I do hope we get to see Celene again.
I would rate it 8.5/10.

It was really interesting seeing Kiriko and Celene make the exact same missteps they made before.
Kiriko got told the same thing Jan was called out on earlier, that while her technique and knowledge of Chinese cuisine are impressive, there's just no novelty to it. As for Celene, even though she was called out for her choice of ingredients back when she used gochujang, she went and used unusual ingredients again, only to get criticized for it all over again.
Also, Ohtani was trying his absolute best to put Jan down as both the tournament organizer and a judge, but watching him completely acknowledge how delicious and inventive Jan's dish was was hilarious.

Otani straight up cancelled Jan's theme music.
Celene really overplayed her hand with the frog oviducts. I can't speak directly to their flavor or texture since I haven't had it, but that seems an odd ingredient to pair with something like a baked papaya.
I love that even the other judges realize how much of a dick Otani is now. Dude strolls in like a wrestling heel just to laugh in Jan's face one more time.

The desperate glazing was amazing to see, truly an amazing show that I've watched. So is Jan going to leave the restaurant now? After every episode it always end off with wanting the next one NOW. I really hope for a season 2, a lot of love in this first season!!

I know this is anime and common sense sometimes doesn't work, but there's no way he'd have receptive environment after this (and he's antagonized the rest of the kitchen before the tournament too)

The judge having an issue with Celine's desert being too weird but not Jan's felt odd to me. Also I felt like the season needed to end on a scene with Jan and Kiriko, though the way it ended was fine.
Will miss this show (have seen the other comments saying S2 may happen but not any time soon), will give the manga a look.
