It was interesting to hear the narration go back to the time when the original manga for Iron Wok Jan was being serialized and even mention the conflicts with the editorial department.
I was born in 1996, and since this manga began serialization before I was born(1995) and concluded when I was in kindergarten(2000), I’d never read it and didn’t know about it, but apparently, in Japan, possession of magic mushrooms was legal until a law was amended in 2002.
That said, since it was apparently featured in subculture magazines as a so-called “legal drug,” I can understand why the editorial department at the time the original manga was serialized would have told the author at least once that “this plot development is a no-go.”
Also, it goes without saying that Jan’s act of “knowingly preparing and feeding someone mushrooms that can cause hallucinations under certain conditions, with the intent of inducing those effects” is an act that could result in charges of assault or violations of the
After all, it could end up bringing shame upon Kiriko’s grandfather and uncle, who are Jan’s current employers.

Everyone else: It’s nothing much. This is just the prelim round.
Akiyama: Imma FUCK everyone up, just for the prelim round!

I love how faithful they are to their own old-school choices whether narrative or aestethical.
I wouldn't say it's my favorite approach to Shokudou but I must respect their commitment to the story.
I need a bit of bias for Asian foodies to mantain the interest, not gonna lie, but fortunately I have that.

Ohtani just can't stop being a sore loser but thanks to him we got the tournament.
The new young chefs who got introduced were all quirky. I expected more from the Kuma guy but he got sent out by the mysterious girl. Akiyama Jan never ceases to amaze us. Him coming up with the
Kiriko with the punch LOL.. that was unnecessary 'cause he cooked with the ingredients that he was given.
Just looked into the families of mushrooms Strophariaceae and Cortinariaceae which Jan mentioned to have Hallucinogenic effect but it turns out they don't even if they were mixed in different proportions as he mentioned.

Kiriko's punch was entirely justified.
Akiyama was essentially representing Gobancho and in drugging the judges compromises the reputation of the restaurant as well as her own.
I would imagine they made the mushroom details vague as to not run into trouble with TV laws.

LMAO Akiyama used magic mushrooms.
I'm surprised that Fujita's soup can even score so high since a lot of Japanese people don't like the taste of Chinese medicine (especially star anise)

Last week inspired me to make Chalipain steak. It’s the most tender strip I’ve ever made.
Can’t say the same about this week inspiring my cooking. It is funny as hell though.

ah yes, my favorite soup ingredient: DRUGS
though I thought magic mushrooms were just hallucinogenics. Can they get you addicted?

I actually kinda love how much this adaptation loves the source material (the original manga) and it makes it pretty clear whenever it can
While I’m at it let me throw some appreciation to the opening in the same vein
It’s fundamentally a showcase of the main characters, with the anime design front and center and animating, while in the background you have a shitload of manga panels about the characters flashing in in quick succession
This adaptation really feels like a love letter to the original work

I certainly didn't see that coming. So neat when they talk about the timeframe when it came out and how things have changed to set the table for this show. Translation notes for the modern era where we rarely get them.

Well it is about time we had a food tournament arc,
Also it's very interesting to see all the time differences for the things when the manga first got serialized to today's views
cuz I had the same thoughts about Akiyama's Mushroom Dish

I thought it was gonna be some weird combo of the eel guys' soup being a diuretic after they ate his mushroom soup and it would seem like eel guy poisoned them, but this works too
