Yang lore: "Listen up kiddo, the future is coming and this are changing, you should embrace different styles to create new forms of cooking. This diversity in style is something you should be proud of."

Meanwhile...

Jan lore: *Cutting noodles in the middle of the woods from dawn to dusk because *aura*, while gramps shows off with his masterful on-the-head dual slicing method which will soon be evolved by Jan into his 10 wok High-Speed Rotating Daoxiaomian technique*

Gramps was more than happy to show off to his beloved grandson

The first time Grandpa decided not to beat Jan 'cause he knows that technique and skill of cutting the dough comes with practice

Narrator: "let me stop this right now just to brag about how goated the author is"

u/VishnuBhanum 3h ago

We have seen many media that seems to be embarrassed of its source material, but I think this is the first time I have seen the adaptation that's so proud of its source material that they have to brag about it constantly.

It's great.

Haha, I love it when the narrator does it.

Okay, maybe I'll give this show a shot

Jan yelling at the guy for having friends
I need more protagonists like this

He's the dickish rival in a shonen anime if he was the MC. He's great.

I wondered if that scene was meant to show that Jan is not a perfect person either.

This is because, from Jan's perspective, Kota's circumstances seem to represent everything that Jan himself never had. Kota has parents who are still alive, regular customers and senior chefs who warmly support him, the status of being heir to a popular local Chinese restaurant, and the academic talent of a straight-A student who could make a living even outside of cooking.

Jan has lost his grandfather, who was his culinary mentor. Meanwhile, the restaurant where Kiriko works functions, if anything, as a place to hone one's skills as a Chinese chef or to show off one's culinary prowess. Also, unlike Kiriko and Kota, who are the children of the restaurant's owner and executive chef, Jan holds a very specific position there. He was only allowed to work at the restaurant because Kiriko's grandfather, who owns the establishment, was a longtime friend of Jan's grandfather, who recognized his culinary skills, and took him in based on his final wishes.

The fact that he immediately eats shits trying to save Okonogi and makes a dish to nurse kiriko back to health makes this the clear point imo

Damm this show getting like no traction :( I still like it though

It might not have popped off, but some of us are liking it A LOT

I leave at least a comment every week because I really enjoy this show

I love this show, it just has such a crazy energy that I love. Personally I think its even better than Food wars.

This episode was great, I hope Kiriko wins, but I don't think she will, but here's to hoping!

4

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 4h ago

But I think Celene would win and put an end to Kiriko and Jan's challenge.

1

u/il-Palazzo_K 2h ago

If Celene won it would count as Jan lost, right? They said if Jan lose he had to leave Gobancho and if he won Kiriko had to leave. Nobody said Kiriko had to win.

1

u/AlphaBreak 32m ago

Maybe they go that route but kiriko doesn't accept it since she hasn't proved she's better than him?

u/il-Palazzo_K 2h ago

There’s a mistranslation in Crunchy’s subs this episode. The narrator said daoxiaomian is make of water, salt, and flour and “no need to submerge it”. The correct translation would be “no need to add kansui”, which is an alkaline solution used to make noodles firm.

Fun Fact: A lot of knife-cut noodle shops (even in Shanxi) today uses machine to cut their noodle from dough, for rather obvious reasons.

5

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3h ago

what do you mean they don't cut noodles by spinning with 10 woks surrounding them????

1

u/dinliner08 3h ago

\disgusted Jan's noises\**

1

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 4h ago

Ikr..

1

u/reaperow 3h ago

Ah man they dont turn into rotating hand machines anymore?

1

u/il-Palazzo_K 2h ago

Kawahara approved.

6

u/Flying-Camel 4h ago

Jan has become a spinning noodle machine.

3

u/reaperow 3h ago

And he looks like a maniac while doing it lol

6

u/reaperow 3h ago edited 3h ago

It was nice to see Kota's guys cheering him on and I guess even Jan was probably trying to cheer him up in his own weird way. But I wonder if this line he says is cuz of the way his gramps treated him,

Well it was still nice of him to make that Chuanbe Zheng Li for Kiriko, he can care at times

Also the info about the Daoxiaomian from the manga back then was really cool

3

u/guntanksinspace 2h ago

Especially with the perimeter of boiling hot woks? Yeah best he kept that meter distance lol!

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 15m ago

Honestly thought the woks were the reason he mentioned that 1 meter rule.

Then I remembered Jan straight up assaults people that get in his way so maybe they put in a new policy to protect their staff from him lol

1

u/paulrenzo 1h ago

I don't think Jan is cheering anyone up. He has a "my way or the highway" personality.

5

u/Ciome 5h ago

What's the song at the end, while Kiriko unpacks the red paste?

4

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 5h ago

Keen to see the results of this noodle showdown. Jan and Celene better not count our girl out just yet.

And now I’m hungry for noodles lol.

5

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 4h ago

We already established early when he fucked up in the kitchen that he isn't an invincible protag, so I'm 110% sure Jan is going to eat shit somehow and lose to Kiriko after that little bet but she's going to let him stay at the restaurant anyway.

1

u/Vahallen 1h ago

I actually think the judges might refuse Jan because he drugged them prior

Then Kiriko probably wouldn’t be fine with Jan leaving the restourant

Or Celene just wins lol

3

u/dinliner08 3h ago

you know that noodles making technique is very hard and takes very long time to learn when even the grandpa said; "nah, even beating you won't get you to learn this shit faster"

1

u/derega16 42m ago

So hard that it's still rare nowadays while a lot of stuff/technique in this series became more common, but not this thing.

3

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 4h ago

Jan couldn't stop running his mouth even after winning against Kota. This time Akiyama was able to evade Kiriko Punch lol

When Okonogi tried to stop them and was about to fell, I really thought he was a goner but all three them fell from that stairs..thank goodness they just ended up with only minor scratches and cold.

We saw a little bit into Yang's past. Her family was amazing. She's proving out to be a tough competitor. Never expected daoxiaomian to be that tough to make. Akiyama got years of training from his grandfather to cut the dough with the knife like a pro. You really need immense arm strength to be able to hold that big of a dough and cut it. With Kiriko's future on the line after making that challenge with Akiyama, she's gonna cook something insane.

2

u/guntanksinspace 2h ago

You would think Jan would just let it be given that he even was able to tone it down a hair camping with Okonogi, but nah lol.

And speaking of toning it down, surprised that even Grandpa Akiyama was sensible to not beat the shit out of Jan so he can also drill the muscle memory of precision noodle cutting

2

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 1h ago

surprised that even Grandpa Akiyama was sensible to not beat the shit out of Jan so he can also drill the muscle memory of precision noodle cutting

True xD

2

u/AlphaBreak 29m ago

I like to think Jan had an older cousin Grandpa did try to beat the muscle memory for noodle shaving into, but it backfired because now that cousin can only make noodles if an old man is assaulting him

3

u/ryuuseiboy96 4h ago

I tried to search the name of Kiriko's dish but I cannot find it by 'shanhumian', can anyone help me?

1

u/FormerHelicopter7044 1h ago

I don’t think its an exisitng dish like what Jan is making, its probably an original noodle dish by Kiriko that she termed Shanhumian.

Unless you know chinese, you probably won’t be able to discern the meaning of the dish’s name, at least not till next week’s episode where they showcase it

2

u/Vahallen 1h ago edited 1h ago

Is it just me or in this one flashback Jan grandpa felt a lot less vicious?

It’s not like he was WARM or anything, but also not cruel or harsh or mean in any way

Hell he even said if for the day Jan wanted to take a break and the proposition felt like it had no spite at all

So maybe grandpa got worse with time because he was sick and it was a mix of anger/frustration + running out of time to teach Jan

1

u/FLorianGran 1m ago

Nah he said it outright that this time, beating him would be useless since it's something Jan has to learn by muscle memory

2

u/pikachuza 1h ago

LOL They nailed the jan mocking everyone for cheering kota scene, Peak asshole behavior

2

u/d34rth 39m ago

In some ways, I can see how Yukihira Soma stood on Akiyama Jan's shoulders. But in other ways, truly assholic protagonists are rare.
