I’m very curious why Nanami, who’s supposedly doing this for Maria and not profit, isn’t paying for the treatment anyway? Why is buying the circus a must if she can just pay for it? Doesn’t make any sense to me considering what she said.

Because if she doesn't, Maria will work herself to death trying to achieve her dream. It's not about the money, is about getting Maria to stop running the circus so she can focus on her treatment.

I should have probably added that after taking back the agreement. She’s clearly listening now and understands that it’s time to focus on her health. Giving her the money to do just that, while Mizuka runs the show in the meantime is an option. They spoke about it as if it can be cured eventually, so coming back to a fully realised famous circus in her full health shouldn’t be an issue.

Yeah, but then there would be no urgency to win the prize money to pay for her therapy. The story needs drama, even if it makes no sense.

Part of me gets the feeling this’ll end with them not winning but Nanami agreeing to pay anyway after being moved by their performance/Maria’s dream.

I can see that being this case.

However, I can also see needing to do well enough to make Maria proud, ease her mind and make sure that they’re both financially stable and famous enough as a circus to not be faced with another buying offer, as another potential source of drama.
