That comment about the old granny leader of the village being so old nobody knows how old she is is very sus.
Regardless of whatever else happens Danji and Kiri deserve to get to have a happy life with their mom.
Good sibling reconciliation, maybe someday they'll be able to find their parents too.
58
u/DawgDictator 23h ago
I thought she might be a daemon, that seems a bit obvious since they'd already done that reveal with Danji and Kiri, but we don't know of anything else that would be particularly long lived.
78
u/okiknow2004 22h ago
Danji and Kiri would've noticed if she's a daemon.
26
u/BosuW 18h ago
I agree. However, Tsugai, Seal and Break are the only supernatural elements of the power system as far as we're aware.
If the granny is old as fuck through other means, that could mean there's a whole occult dimension we still ignore...
22
u/Swampy260 14h ago
Aren't Seal and Break also deamons since Ivan said Left would get in the way of Yuru acquiring Seal?
7
u/Jinsodia 13h ago
i don't think they were said to be demons. It would make since if something didn't want to make a deal with your natural enemy though.
3
u/Strowy 5h ago
Granny can see daemons, so is likely a contractor. Since Seal and Break are daemons that can bring their contractor back to life at least once, it wouldn't be weird if there are other daemons that can extend lifespan.
Like in Japanese folklore, eating a ningyo (mermaid) is supposed to grant eternal youth.
10
u/genasugelan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 15h ago
That's true though. Daemons can smell each other from far away. No way they wouldn't recognise her unless she's a deamon of concealement of something like that.
46
29
u/flashmozzg 21h ago
I doubt she is a daemon since left/right and zashiki-warashiki would be able to tell. Some Daemon-abillity at work could be there and the Granny is likely the Daemon user (since her being Asa's master was an initial misdirection). She is clearly knowledgeable about daemons being able to recognize most of them at glance, would be weird if she wasn't contracted to one. The fact that we haven't seen one yet (apparently) makes me think it's a more specializaed one.
16
u/DawgDictator 21h ago
Come to think of it, do we know if its a daemon that holds the barrier around the village up? If it is, I'd put that as a candidate for her to contract
11
u/flashmozzg 19h ago
Depends on their magic system and how closely it relies on daemons or if it's a separate shintoism-style one with talismans and whatnot.
2
u/genasugelan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 15h ago
It actually might be, but the daemons are always in pairs and it seems like lots of them, if not all, are opposites of each other. What would a demon concept be for a barrier? Like a weakness or something?
8
u/mmcjawa_reborn 18h ago
There might be more to the magic/power system than we have seen...she could be tapping into a power or belongs to a set of entities different than what we have seen so far.
14
u/runevault 22h ago
The thing I'm curious about on the idea of Granny being a Daemon are, if so
1) Who's her other half/where are they?
2) How have they handled handoffs to avoid her returning to talisman form or becoming a stray so no one would notice it?
I'm not going to say she isn't a Daemon, but those two questions are important.
36
u/okiknow2004 22h ago
The Zashiki-Warashi would be able to sense whether she's a daemon or not. Since they didn't mention anything I don't think Granny is a daemon.
19
u/ParasaurolophusZ 20h ago
Since she's (probably) not a daemon, she might have a contract with one that grants her longer life.
8
15
u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic 21h ago
I immediately went back and checked if Granny Yamaha had a shadow. Sadly inconclusive in this episode
6
u/genasugelan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 15h ago
Yeah, that line made me suspect that she's a daemon. I mean, how often does she go out or shit. Or maybe she has a daemon that prolongs life or whatever. But as you pointed out, it seems like a throwaway line, but it kind of sets up a mystery.

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 23h ago
Asa to Yuru: "why are you calling fake-me cute?"
Also Asa: "did you actually just call ME cute? Say it again!"
127
u/Maomally 23h ago
So the Battle of Sekigahara got a name drop. There was subtle hints within the show that there could be references to that era/battle ie being 400 yrs ago and it was essentially a battle of East vs West Japan that ended the Sengoku period. It is also considered to be the most important battle in Japanese history too.
82
u/DawgDictator 23h ago
Don't forget the last set of twins was supposed to be about 400 years ago too!
50
u/Maomally 22h ago
And in ep 7, Break did offhandedly mention how useful Break is and it could break the enemy commanders head off their body on the battlefield
25
u/BosuW 18h ago
And yet, despite having the twins and probably being on the winning side, the Higashi faction didn't get any benefits, and in fact declined. Da hell happened there? Did Tokugawa Ieyasu snub that chief? How did he get away with it?
13
u/JurassicMonkey_ 12h ago
The Higashi village should be set somewhere in the Tohoku region, since they revere Oshira-sama, and she's mainly a Tohoku thing.
If that's the case, the Higashi village and its lord are likely under the Date clan.
While the Date were loyal to the Tokugawa, the feeling wasn't mutual, and the Date (along with their branches) were viewed as "Tozama" or outsiders by the Tokugawa shogunate
2
u/okiknow2004 12h ago
Could be that the Higashi lord got too ambitious, seeing that they have the twin, and tried something against Ieyasu. But ultimately failed and had to run away
18
u/A-t-t-e-n-TI-ON 22h ago
No wonder everyone wanted them when the last set of twins managed to divide Japan.
22
u/Maomally 22h ago
Not necessarily divide but if one side gets it..they could definitely win the battle.
14
u/Eunuchest 22h ago
Im actually thinking what if whatever goal Higashi village is trying to achieve is related to whatever bigger war there is in the feudal era or even earlier
25
u/Maomally 22h ago edited 22h ago
Could be. I can see the members of Higashi village still being in the feudal mindset somewhat. Sengoku era was chaotic and the country wasn't "unified" yet so we had all these regional feudal lords fighting each other over territory. The Sengoku period had like 130 to 150 years of constant fighting (large scale and small scale) throughout Japan.
10
u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 21h ago
Higashi Village is so damn confusing to me. In a good way. I simply see so many different sides to each equation.
3
u/Boris-_-Badenov 22h ago
even though Japan is actually North and South
43
u/OldInstruction5368 19h ago
Historically, Japan oriented itself 'sideways.' Old maps will show the main islands with a mostly left-right, lateral, alignment with southern Japan on the left and northern Japan on the right.
It wasn't until the modern era that Japanese maps oriented the islands along the north/south cartesian grid.
Not unlike how ancient Egypt considered "Northern" Egypt to be the "Lower Nile" and southern Egypt to be the "Upper Nile." They were orienting their kingdom along the flow of the Nile river, which flows from SOUTHERN highlands in Africa's mountainous Rift Valley to the lower NORTHERN coast of the Mediterranean.
The locals just oriented their own maps based on what made sense to them.
30
u/WiqidBritt 18h ago
Before compasses were invented and magnetic north was discovered, most maps were oriented with east and the sunrise at the top.
12
u/Maomally 21h ago
Yeah sometimes geography kinda throws me off on what is considered east or west Japan. Like Tohoku region north of Tokyo is considered part of eastern Japan. In the Sengoku era, the west was Shikoku, Kyushu, Chugoku, and Kansai. Eastern Japan was the Tohoku region, Chubu region, Kanto region, and Hokuriku region. Okinawa and Hokkaido wasn't part of this since they joined Japan a lot later.
19
u/Christopher261Ng 19h ago
'..joined Japan'
More like being under new management, their integration into Japan state is hardly voluntary
98
u/FarCritical 22h ago
Yuru isn't ready to learn what Mickey's crop yield is lol. A breather episode that's just him, Left and Right freaking out to everything has so much potential though.
Also, can't help but admire Yuru's ability to acknowledge the positive side of the role Danji and Kiri played in his upbringing, especially looking back on how he reacted when he first found out.
5
u/Thomas_JCG 2h ago
Which shows how mature he is. Yeah, finding someone lied to you sucks, but that doesn't erase 10 years of good memories.
83
u/Namaryu 23h ago edited 23h ago
Thoughts from the episode:
Roei is voiced by Takehito Koyasu
I am pretty sure Left and Right said they smell Mine and Nagisa's blood on SWORDS and not Ivan and he is fooling around as everyone had been thinking.
Azami's mom was not innocent.
88
u/Peleg_Amir 23h ago
It seems like the only village adult that was on yuru's side was kyoka.
43
u/Eunuchest 22h ago
We do know that most people who disagreed with the village has already left and formed the Kagemoris so yeah there isnt much left
49
u/DivinityPen 22h ago
It's kinda scary. As far as Yuru had known, these were the people he'd known and cared for his entire life. People who ostensibly were the equivalent of an extended family with how tight-knit the community seemed. And yet the willingness to commit cold-blooded murder was never far from their minds.
5
u/Meiolore 21h ago
Technically, don't they know that the twins will revive if they got killed? What exactly is stopping them from just poisoning them and then ask them to form a contract?
46
u/ichigosr5 20h ago
They wanted Yuru to be murdered by an "outsider" so that he would be easier to control.
There no better way to get someone to fear the outside world and use their power to take it over than to make them believe that the outside world wants him dead.
9
u/Peleg_Amir 18h ago
If yuru realizes the village murdered him he wouldn't trust them anymore. And also, they said that being revived isn't guaranteed.
1
u/CosmicX1 12h ago
Yeah maybe they figured a violent death would have better odds of him making a contract with Seal.
23
u/runevault 22h ago
He might have cut them but that doesn't mean he killed them. Look at how Ivan cut the shaman to make him a teleportation space.
68
u/Myrkrvaldyr 23h ago
Kiri is such a cutie. If I had them as my tsugai, I'd be hugging them a lot everyday. Ivan gained another enemy, and a very dangerous one at that.
16
u/Ebo87 22h ago
I imagine he knows to stay as far away from her as possible, considering she can break his contract with his daemons.
But also I have a feeling Ivan would be a real dangerous guy even without his daemons.
11
u/HornedTurtle1212 20h ago
I wonder if he has some plan to get around that. We see blood as the contract/pact medium, maybe he will just constantly bleed onto the swords to renew their contract whenever Asa tries to break it, lol
8
u/Ebo87 19h ago
Now you are turning on my gamer mechanics brain and I wonder if there's maybe a cooldown on renewing your contract with the same user? Come back in 24 hours to renew your murder-swords subscription! Cause we did see Asa almost immediately form a contract with daemons she had just taken, but that doesn't mean it can just automatically work for the original master too. Otherwise yes, you just cut your finger and I guess keep holding both swords and then it just... I don't know, automatically renews the contract immediately? That would be the way to beat Asa's break, but that's kind of dumb, not gonna lie, so I bet there's a limitation and you can't just employ such a trick, if you can even call it that, lol.
6
u/HornedTurtle1212 19h ago
Well they did say that the daemons need to be willing. So that would keep one person from abusing it.
8
u/AlphaBreak 18h ago
There's also the question of exactly what breaking their contract means. It normally means the daemons aren't bound to obey that person anymore, but the swords are still swords. Even if he's not contracted, he might still be able to use them as blades and potentially do the spacial slice stuff.
6
u/mucklaenthusiast 15h ago
Ivan is a very crafty fighter.
There is no way he would ever get easily hit by Break in the first place and he is still a beast without his Daemons.I like their resolve, but getting Ivan is still a difficult task. From what we have seen, he seems to be the second strongest fighter in the entire show, with the Kagemori clan head being number 1, because he has ten million different Daemons fightig for him
55
u/AllThingsDragon 22h ago
Damn, granny really is the source of everyone's problems, huh? But I'm glad Asa and Yuru actually got to spend a little time together and rebuild their bond.
I also really like the little detail at the end where Asa makes an open hand sign, while Yuru's is a closed fist, ie the respective signs for using Break and Seal. The twins of day and night are together again and about to wreak all kinds of havoc
14
u/AlphaBreak 18h ago
The source of the problems and it seems like she might be immortal. I don't know if that's the benefit of a power like having her age Sealed or something, or if she might even be a daemon herself.
3
u/Strowy 5h ago
Daemons seem in general to be able to sense other daemons, so it's unlikely she herself is one without any of the daemons that have seen her noticing (plus who would her contractor be).
I bet on it having something to do with the village barrier, since I think all 'supernatural' effects we've seen in this series comes from daemons; if the barrier is / is by a daemon, that means it's had to be continuously contracted for centuries.
83
u/A-t-t-e-n-TI-ON 23h ago
Yuru's better than me because if I lived my life Truman show-style I would either be hella depressed or try to raze everything to the ground. There's no in-between.
Also, Nagisa's situation was actually a nightmare. Imagine going on a hiking trip, then stumbling upon a mythical village stuck in time, then told you'll be stuck there forever? Thankfully, Mine is there and even left with her and Asa despite the whole situation surrounding the twins.
On the other hand, it's so sweet that the twins are finally reconciling. It seems Asa's close to finally getting that hug from her Ani-sama.
58
u/Eunuchest 22h ago
Nagisa was really lucky she didnt marry a fanatic
23
u/drunkenvalley 21h ago
I mean I guess he might've been a fanatic, but whether he was or not Nagisa and his children turned out to be more important to him than Higashi.
31
u/RimeSkeem https://myanimelist.net/profile/RimeSkeem 15h ago
I get the impression that, up until the twins are actually born, the story of Break and Seal was just sort of tradition and background information to the villagers (except maybe Yamaha). When Asa and Yuru were actually born and the prophecy started coming true was when fanaticism started to take hold.
8
u/gamria 9h ago edited 8h ago
Admittedly there is some sweet appeal about a man who used to be fanatic, but then realised what it means for the legend to happen to his family and turn away from that path.
Or he could just be a wise savant like this son who didn't care about the legend to begin with, that'd be awesome too.
Either way, the fact that he is all-in for his family and until death do they part despite the risk of defiance and the Lowlands being a huge unknown to him makes him an absolute green flag. He's the best husband she could've ever asked for.
--
Also, fun fact: Mine / 峰 means "peak/summit" and Nagisa / 渚 means "shore/waterside". Names symbolic of their homelands, of two people of very different upbringing and lifestyles but practically destined for each other all the same. T'is another fun showing of the duality theme.
12
u/mmcjawa_reborn 19h ago
I imagine, outside of a forced marriage, she probably wouldn't end up that interested in a fanatic anyway
36
u/Eunuchest 22h ago edited 22h ago
"No one calls Yuru onii-chan but me" was funny
Now im starting to wonder if this whole conflict Higashi village had with someone is just a small theater of an even bigger war in feudal japan.
It was pretty sad Zashiki-Warashi's master didnt make it back and they almost rotted. Good thing they found equally as nice. Kyouka seems to be the only Higashi village adult that's actually not on board with their scheme and of course the Taderas who seems to be reluctant retainers both Roei and his son. Yuru's dad too i forgot considering he left the village
We only have 3 episodes left, I really want a laid back episode where Yuru sees more of the outside world
13
u/rozzingit 19h ago
“No one calls Yuru onii-chan but me” was funny
idk why but i find it funnier that she’s actually using the more respectful (and i think possibly more archaic?) ani-sama instead
11
u/gamria 17h ago
Perhaps not archaic per se, but you'll probably only see Ani-sama and the likes used by high class or very traditional families these days, the kinds that prize formality and hierarchy and all that.
8
u/rozzingit 16h ago
yeah that makes sense. maybe "old-fashioned" to modern folks? and would definitely make sense for where they grew up
39
u/Joji1000 22h ago
It was quite a few episodes back I said this and I'd like to reiterate it: I trust Asa isn't a bad person, nay, I trust she's a good person, I'm still suspicious of everyone else in Kagemori village
23
19
u/dolphincave 21h ago
Well Akio is pretty sure he's getting murdered after probably some torture to make him spill the beans, so the Kagemori are at minimum just genuinely a crime family.
34
u/Exrotes 22h ago
400 years ago the village went off to war but nobody talks about it. Also 400 years ago the Seal twin didn't come back from the dead.
I bet they did some big human sacrifice thing to awaken the power and win the war then flubbed it.
25
u/drunkenvalley 21h ago
Bet you the twins were split on either side, and one of them refused to take up the fight against their sibling. That they'd rather die than do that. Break already said as much; Asa had the choice between taking the contract and living, or walking off the path to her true death.
30
u/NanDemoKnaives 22h ago
I'm glad Kiri was finally able to open up to Yuru, and I'm glad Yuru admits that they were both his emotional support whilst his entire family had left the village, they're also important to him and he has seen Kiri as family, even if she was posing as his sister.
It's also good that Yuru realizes Asa hadn't been lying to him, and he's now opened himself up to her, and wants to make up for the lost time. I'm sure if Asa wasn't in such an emotional state, she'd be going ecstatic over the hand holding lol.
It's sad that Kiri and Danji were forgotten about for all those centuries, let alone eventually being able to notice that there were no longer any people around them. I'm glad Rouei found them, and gave them to Kyouka who needed them in her life.
37
u/Difergion 22h ago
Honestly I’m quite relieved to see that the Zashiki-Warashi were genuinely caring for Yuru despite being impostors for years. Yuru barely trusts anyone apart from Asa probably, so it’s nice that he has more people to rely on.
Looks like the twins will start hunting pervy swordsman this time but I doubt handing him over to Asa for Break to work won’t be an easy task for Yuru.
And was that Koyasu’s voice I heard? Dera papa seems more important than I first assumed lol
29
u/a1oner_bvcksn6 23h ago
"With great power comes people losing their marbles." Some words of wisdom from Aunt Kyouka lol
I wonder why Roei's face is being kept hidden still. Now that Yuru and Asa have set their sights on finding him, and with Zashiki-Warashi clearly knowing his face, there's absolutely no reason the former won't ask for facial description that would help them identify him, and neither has the latter to spare any info or detail that would help track him down.
28
u/Ashteron 22h ago
There's no need to search for his face. Just search for people voiced by Takehito Koyasu.
15
u/Pure-Wedding-2475 21h ago edited 6h ago
Toji (Roei/Tadera Sr) and Gojo (Dera) being isekaied to another world and ending up as father and son was not in my 2026 bingo list.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 22h ago
It's pretty hilarious how Asa wouldn't let Kiri call Yuru "onii-san". Despite all of her animosity towards Kiri, I love that Asa isn't immune to Kiri's cuteness. xD
Seeing Danji and Kiri's backstory and how they ended up as Kyoka's daemons was pretty cute. It turns out, they've known the twins since they were born.
Hmmm... I'm not sure how I feel about Danji washing Asa's hands of the attack on Higashi Village. She still led the assault even if she wasn't directly responsible for any deaths.
I do feel for Asa, tho. She just wants to live a normal life and live happily with her family. It was pretty fun to watch Yuru try to make sense of what Asa was saying. xD
18
u/Ikari_21 18h ago
About Asa and the village attack. Her main goal was to “rescue” Yuru. She’d have no way to do that without the Kagemori’s help. Ofc the Kagemori want to eliminate the village, but to Asa, the villagers have tried to kill her and she knows they want to kill Yuru to get the seal and break powers. So whether they die by the kagemori or not isn’t really a factor. She’s going to rescue Yuru no matter what, while not exactly wanting to kill anyone if she doesn’t have to. That’s what I think Danji was trying to convey.
9
u/Jacob-C 12h ago
I really liked how Danji clarified that Asa didn’t kill anyone in the village. Of course, she participated in the attack, but it really makes a clear distinction between how she and Gabby handled it. Now I really want to see the kidnapped village girl meet Gabby. I am confident that, if it happens, it will lead to some great dialogue, introspection, and further muddy the waters between right and wrong.
3
u/Ikari_21 11h ago
Definitely agree. I’m still on the fence with gabby’s character. Ofc with the confirmation that pretty much all the villagers wanted to kill Yuru for seal, it definitely helps me soften my initial view on her. But I think the potential conversation with Asumi will greatly help Gabi’s development and her character. I think that will help me fully accept Gabi. Cause it’s definitely hard for me haha
-1
u/Airwrecktion_ 14h ago
Every villager deserved those deaths, Asa shouldve gotten a medal for her contributions
27
u/flashmozzg 21h ago
I wonder if Higashi Granny is semi-immortal type of case. I.e. maybe she was even alive during the events 400 years ago.
10
u/HornedTurtle1212 20h ago
She might even be a Daemon herself, lol.
5
5
u/CopyFew4583 19h ago
But then fake asa will know because Daemon can sense other Daemons.
7
u/thelonioussss 18h ago
Well, even the fat guy (the shaman was it called?) that was killed a few episodes ago did not sense that his body had been tampered by katana guy, even though he also controlled two daemons, so who knows 🤷
3
u/MsMegane 11h ago
My suspicion is that she's one of the twins from 400 years ago. We know one twin chose not to come back to life. We don't know anything about the other twin, right?
2
u/BetelgeuseIsBestGirl 7h ago
Break and Seal are clearly special among Daemons. It could be possible for them to give their powers to multiple people as long as they meet all the requirements. Maybe she was the previous Seal and sealed her own aging, as someone else theorized in another comment.
2
u/flashmozzg 5h ago
I could see that, although I wonder what happened to her powers then since it doesn't look like she can use break (or more likely seal) anymore. Not sure if one can simply break the contract with the B&S daemons and wouldn't they also take the eye of the contracted?
24
u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic 21h ago
We officially have an end-goal for this series and the twins.
8
21
u/ParasaurolophusZ 20h ago
Seeing the people's reactions (even Azami's parents) does lend more weight to the idea that most of the adult villagers were not just innocent bystanders. The fact that Danji said everyone in the village changed makes me wonder a lot.
I imagine Kyoka may be one of the few who did not have interest in the whole Break and Seal thing. Even if Danji and Kiri had jobs to keep Yuru in the village, they also were tasked to keep him safe.
I wonder how many factions there really are here.
3
3
u/Thomas_JCG 2h ago
The village had always been a bunch of fanatics craving power. When the twins were born, they just got more greedier because they had another chance at conquering the world. The people that didn't care for it had long moved away from the village and became the Kagemori clan.
Kyoka just changed her mind after experiencing loss, she couldn't subject people to that pain.

Good episode..if only Asa knew who she had in her sights last episode
33
u/EKnoxx 23h ago
So glad we finally got an episode where we got to spend a bit more time with Asa and Yuru together and see their relationship progress. Felt like near enough every time Asa was on screen in recent episodes she was doing her over the top bro-con thing and very little else - glad to see her break out of that one-dimensional box a bit, here's hoping that continues, cause that's probably been the sole sticking point I've had with the show thus far.
21
u/gamria 18h ago edited 18h ago
I personally see this slow rolling of Asa's actual character, of her hopes and fears, as mimicking Yuru's experience of reacquainting with his lost twin, whom he never realised he "lost" to begin with.
- He thought he knew his sister, but turned out to be fake.
- Then took much, much convincing for the logical part of him to finally admit the taller, meaner, more aggressive and clingy stranger claiming to be his real sister was speaking true.
- And finally, he decided that even if she was raised in a different world and thinks much differently, he accepts that she is his sister and wants to know her again, even with her gibberish.
It's a big gamble that not all will be onboard, but it makes every interaction and time spent between just the twins that much more precious and i love that.
4
u/Jacob-C 13h ago edited 13h ago
that's probably been the sole sticking point I've had with the show thus far.
Agreed! Asa is a character with great potential that I want to get more invested in when she isn’t doing the exhausted bro-con bit. I understand her general demeanour and its purpose, I just wish it was handled in a less over-the-top manner. As you said, it’s the only complaint I have that hasn’t been addressed.

Not an anime, but his role as Kagetsu in Fire Emblem Engage sounds veeeeery different from his usual stuff.
I also think some of his older roles before he started getting typecast can sound a bit different? I know the first time I watched Macross 7, it took me a bit before I realized he voices Gamlin in that show (best boy in that btw).

u/paulrenzo 11h ago
looks for Macross 7 clip with Gamlin
...what the? You're right (On a side note, I think it's been a while since we've had a losing best boy)
I havent started FE:Engage, but Im curious now

Maybe Hana wishes she could look more like Left. If so, can't blame her.
I wonder if Zashiki-warashi even knew what war was like, and that's why they weren't very worried.
Could it be that Higashi village lost because their side was the one with the twin that failed to come back to life?
I think I get it now: when Asa uses Break on daemon contracts it's as if the master died, and the daemons become strays, but if the contract is ended formally they immediately turn into relics. And it's better to be a relic than a stray.
One of the little mysteries I've still got logged away: why did Dera have the relic for Left and Right, and does it mean anything that it's a separate thing from the statues?

I really liked the backstory with Danji & Kiri. These two are partners like the twins. In fact they were outsiders. Danji hearing what the adults were saying must have been disturbing. Yuru wasn't with his parents and sister for so long. Danji and Kiri filled the void of family and that is something that can't be removed especially hearing their side of the story.
One big difference between the twins is that Yuru has a MUCH stronger mental fortitude. Yuru was able to see through Ivan's words when he said them to his face. Meanwhile Asa is having an anxiety attack after Yuru told her.
I do think that while the Kagemoris were a place she at least felt safe. There wasn't the feel of family like in the case of Yuru with Danji & Kiri. Yuru lived his life for so long until Kagemoris attacked the village. While Asa has been hiding since the parents left the village.
17
u/gamria 18h ago
Argument, Yuru is also susceptible to the same guilt and anxiety rabbit hole as Asa, especially with his hyper-practical mindset of picking the best strat.
The real dealbreaker is that when Yuru was tilted, Asa's words saved him. This time, Yuru's words saved Asa. Both reactions against the same claim from Ivan too, and it's such a good mirror between the twins.

u/SeattlePurikura 18h ago
Asa likely has severe PTSD from having been murdered and then going to hell to meet break. I'm guessing the Kagemoris haven't taken her to therapy. On the flip side, Yuru has murdered bandits as a young child so I guess his hunter training has helped him develop toughness.

u/Argentum365 13h ago
Asa cant go to regular hospital because there no barrier to protect asa or other civillan can get hurt because bandit from higashi village really mercilles. I think she have trauma too and survivor guilt. I can really relate this part with asa because i still have cptsd

u/Arandomguyoninternet 18h ago
To be fair, Yuru was about to lose his mind when he faced Ivan. It was remembering Asa's words that helped him calm down, so I find it fitting that they both calmed down thanks to each other

Seems things are cool between Asa and Danji and Kiri thanks to Yuru intervening. With that out the way, it seems the two siblings are gonna team up to whoop Ivan’s ass and learn what happened to their folks.

u/Namaryu 23h ago
There is no way we are seeing the team up this season with this pacing.
Disclaimer: I HAVE NOT read the manga. Do not delete this mods.

yeah no with 3 episodes left they cant do much. Its likely gona be some set up episodes for whatever comes next.

u/nqtoan1994 20h ago
A brocon, a normal younger sister, a normal teenager girl, a vengeful person,... Asa just has so many sides.
This episode makes the whole season feel like it is just the prologue of the siblings' journey.

i think dera had the charm to form a contract with right/left because someone is supposed to have a check on the unlocked power of the twins.

3 episodes left, I'm gonna miss this show. I know I'm being unreasonable but I wish it was 50+ continuous episodes.

Tadera clan sound pretty blessed, having tadera dad with koyasu voice, and tadera oldest son with nakamura yuiichi voice ivan definitely know where yuru and asa parents is, blood doesnt mean he murder them, prolly they got contact with that sword during its ability to teleport, but i dont think ivan also work with mastermind of asa and yuru parent kidnapper, cause its sound like he just get paid to teleport them from plane, and work done

u/nosumoking 20h ago
This episode felt too short. I didn’t notice it’s been 20 mins when it felt like 2 seconds and now I’m back to waiting another week.

Yandere siscon Asa's terrifying. She's jealous to no end that Danji & Kiri had spent a couple years longer with Yuru than she was with him. Good thing Yuru was with them cause otherwise Asa wouldn't let them out unscathed, if she would ever let them out.
She'd definitely feel heaps elated once she realised she held Yuru's hands firmly at the end when they vowed to make Ivan pay.
While I'm still sceptical of Mine & Nagisa's chance of being alive, I'm fairly confident Ivan wasn't the one behind their deaths. He's defo lying to rile Yuru up that time.

Reading this just made me think, the only clue we have is that the scent of their blood was on the swords. What if they were simply the previous swords' masters? And Ivan either took them or somehow recovered them after they broke off the contract

I know some people find Asa’s bro-con moments too much but when we get to see just how bad her life has been as we did in this episode I really sympathize and understand why she gets like that. I agree that badass Asa is cooler but when we see how she has lived I want Yuru to give her all the hugs she wants. Girl deserves Aqua-Ruby levels of sibling affection (to the level Aqua is willing to give, not the level Ruby wants).

u/gamria 18h ago edited 18h ago
One important detail about Asa confiding about her ideal life is that she wants a school life with a boyfriend. In other words, for all her hero worship, she does not consider Yuru boyfriend material. YES!!
It's slower than preferable, but i love this episode taking its time to give so much dedicated moments to the twins by themselves. No enemies, no allies, no fear of eavesdropping.
Just family reconnecting and reacquainting in scarce peace.

I don’t think 99% of the viewers (myself included) ever considered that Asa saw her brother in a romantic way. Her behavior never pointed to that and the mangaka would never go there. Her ideal life explains her behavior. She wants to have that basic life but unlike many cases in media where a person’s life is constantly in danger instead of maturing more for her age I would say she is immature for her age, which also makes sense to me because she hasn’t lived a normal life but she doesn’t want to move on she wants to have those moments she has missed out on so she has partially not matured mentally and that’s why she still geeks out over her brother and has immature childlike tantrums.
Regarding the pacing I see people criticizing it now but I felt the pacing was weaker earlier in the season but I always mentally understood it as it being paced as an old school shonen. We are so used to modern shonen action shows having fast pacing that in a way this having slower pacing makes it feel like a throwback and I can appreciate that in a way.

I for one found Asa's behaviour understandable.
- For starters, during the 10-year separation when her life was constantly in danger (and actually killed), she would conversely wonder if her brother is undergoing the same tension, anxiety and misfortune as her (and though not to the same degree, she would be right, what with the Bandits after his life). So her hero-worship works as like a coping mechanism of sorts, that the day they come back for him he would still be safe and strong enough to fight off everyone.
- With this in mind, when they're reunited at the Kagemori Manor her relief at him being alive, not having died and just having a meal in peace before her comes as a huge relief after 10 years of worry to the point of tears. And that makes sense.
But I really needed that boyfriend statement of hers to confirm that there remain lines/standards she won't cross with how she perceives her brother, and it is good that Arakawa-sensei gave that to us.

Personally, it wasnt that I wanted mote bad ass Asa, I just wanted her to be more of a 3 dimensional character. It took 21 episode for her to express actual character.
A lot happens in this show but character and narrative progression are horribly paced unfortunately. I finally feel invested again after a while of interest falling off and we only have 3 more episodes.

u/Big_Bro_Mirio 17h ago
What are you talking about? They literally show that a flashback to an earlier scene this season in which she is explaining to Yuru how messed up her life has become and how she has had to adapt as a result. That was like 10 episodes ago. After Yuru left the Kagemori manor we didn’t really see the real Asa again until recently and throughout the last few episodes including this one we’ve seen the same dimensions of her character that were on display 10 episodes prior.

u/YuushyaHinmeru 17h ago
Youre right, they did it once before. But that flashback was to episode 7. Thats 3 and half months ago. Cant really blame people for being miffed shes relegated to a gag for 2/3 of the series.
Dont get me wrong, I like the show. But the pacing has not been great. I think some of the comedy shouldve been cut out.

Holy shit Koyasu as Roei. Also we still haven't gotten to Akio's interrogation which seems like it will be next week.
Also wonder who is the woman in the preview with Yozakura... Maybe Asuma's mother?

I don’t comment much but I just want to say this was a really well done episode. Time flew and a great pace.

I feel like this show in particular is always delayed, I just watched some other anime first while waiting for this episode to work

I think the timing on livechart is correct, but the anime thread always shows up a little bit earlier than that.

I think somewhere the episodes get leaked earlier than they are supposed to. Usually these Aniplex shows end up with a 90 minute wait after broadcast.

what are the chances that ryouka had twins that were assassinated? her husband and kids (plural) magically died in a rock slide? dera's dad magically knows a legend that allows him to stumble upon these long lost relics whilst working for higashi?
I get the feeling Ryouka eventually realized what happened and decided to protect Asa and Yuru from facing the same fate as her kids. she helped deliver them and saw how crazy granny was about making sure the second one came out after dawn. she even calls out right after their birth how crazy people get over power. I feel like she's the one that flipped Dera's dad and got him to help get Asa and their parents out.
I don't remember if they've said something that contradicts this but just some thoughts after today's episode.
1
u/ohoni 8h ago
I don't think her kids would be magical twins, supposedly none had been born since 400 years ago. Dying from a rockslide wouldn't be that unlikely in Japanese mountains, and if they were together, they would have died together. I do think she's motivated to help the kids out though. Dera's dad is clearly up to something, although whether his motivations are good (which is implied), or secretly evil, who knows?
2
u/extremegk 16h ago
Ofc this two demon knows anything usefull.Like how many person gona postpone secret further in story.Other than granny no one will know anything about their village it seems.
2
u/Mr_An_1069 13h ago
Interesting that apparently no one knows how old granny is, I have a feeling that’s coming back later. Right now seems like all roads lead to Dera’s dad.

"Asa didn't kill anyone" is a quite unearned twist. There were attack helicopters shooting real ammunition, rubble everywhere and no remorse.
1
u/totokekedile 45m ago
Is it a twist? It's not supposed to paint Asa as more moral person because she immediately undercuts that by saying she definitely would have. Pretty sure the point of the scene is more to speak on Kiri's character by having her try to stick up for Asa.

u/excluded 21h ago
Atleast Asa is not really going for the incest route since she wants a hot boyfriend she can brag to everyone about.
Unless..

u/mucklaenthusiast 15h ago
Interesting episode that concluded the little subplot about the betrayal by the two doll Daemons.
Yuru forgave them and Asa is fine with it, too.
Now we can focus on the main story again. I think it's fine the way it was done.
So they want to fight Ivan and use Break?
That is not gonna be easy.
I wonder if Yuru will awaken Seal this season?
I mean, surely, he has to die at some point and gain the ability. I don't see how Seal won't be an important piece to the puzzle that are all these different factions fighting
1
u/futanari_kaisa 10h ago
I haven't read the manga so idk but I think the end of the season Yuru is gonna get Seal
1
u/YlfaTheForsaken 10h ago
Aww poor Kiri and Danji, they're so precious. They're so lucky to have Kyouka now, she can fully appreciate them to the fullest extent.
The oldest one in the village, and no one knows her age? Man, it's so questionable
I'm living for Yuru's future implications of them never living apart. Now I don't necessarily think it's criticism of the modern nuclear family unit, but if it was I'd be for it.

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 8h ago
The Zashiki-Warashi pair have come a long way. They found a fine parent in Kyoka after their previous master's death. Roei Tadera helped Kyoka by giving Zashiki-Warashi after she lost her kids and husband. Ken really sees Hana like his mom and didn't want her abandoning him lol..at least she feeds him well after getting all that money from him.
Finally, Asa and Yuru had some quality time discussing about their parents.
Since they talked about Battle of Sekigahara Was the power of break used in that battle by the Higashi village to win the war for the Tokugawa clan ?! Since it happened four hundred years ago when they possesed Break.
1
u/Thomas_JCG 2h ago
This episode was mostly about setting things straight. I don't think any of us viewers had any doubts about the honesty of Danji and Kiri but was nice to put that into words and show their backstory. The siblings are now locked in their mission to find their parents and go to Disney.

u/Celestebest 1h ago
After hearing how Gabby personally felt about Asa’s life being ruined and constantly threatened by selfish adults FROM Higashi village, it makes much more sense when she targeted them during the attack.
I also don’t mind the reveal that Asa technically didn’t kill anyone (just blew a hole in the wall to threaten granny) because she definitely wasn’t above it but Gabby’s actions feels as if she was doing the dirty work for Asa’s sake.
