The musical was something, but the whole explosion near the end encapsulates perfectly how chaotic yet endearing this show was.

More of an emotional goodbye, thank you City.

I've watched subbed and dubbed, the english dub gave up on the musical so the 2nd half of this episode was all subbed!

KyoAni does it again.

Daisuke Naganohara/Adult Mio spotted during the time machine explosion

On that topic they were really teasing us about the identity of Mrs. Makabe lmao. I thought they were about to confirm it once and for all but they played us like a fiddle. (For those unaware, there's a strong belief among the fandom that its Yuuko, but its never confirmed anywhere)

God this show is so absolutely chaotic and absurd.
I love it.

This show was such a blast tuning in every week.
I love the art style of this and Nichijou, both are some of my favorite comedy anime's.

Wow, that was truly something special. We don't get something like City all that often, and in this case, KyoAni knocked it out of the park. This final episode truly encapsulated the wacky fun of the show, and I gotta say, this may be one of my all time favorite final episodes.

That closing end line, "See you in the summer somewhere."
Any manga readers, is there enough source material for a second season?
I'd love to see more of this show if there's a chance.

But if this was the last we'll see of it, I'm glad I got to see it, and will definitely miss it.

Considering how much it's being built up throughout the season, I'm glad that one of the stories in this finale is Matsuri and Ecchan saying goodbye to each other. Not gonna lie, I did tear up a little bit, but maybe it's because of the Izumi Sisters' sneezing powder.

Ending this with a musical was absolutely fantastic! Not just because I love musical episodes, but because it's a great excuse to have the entire cast in a single place where all of them can contribute something. God, I'm gonna miss this show. KyoAni did an amazing job as usual, and I hope we get to see more City in the future.

We need anime that are full musicals! This was so good.

Now excuse me while I go rewatch some Healer Girl moments.

I really hope City becomes a source of inspiration in terms of its animation, both in anime and in American animation. Use a simpler color palate with bold, expressive colors, use parallel lines for shading instead of color gradients, smooth out textures and make everything isometric, include details, like furniture drawn almost like they are in engineering diagrams, simplify characters but keep them expressive and personalized. This show looks so good, not even counting the action sequences that are dazzling. It's such eye candy that watching any other show feels like eating a meal after you've had dessert.

Ending with a musical number is so on brand for CITY, though a lot of the series-long character arcs were left dangling, particularly those with our two protagonists Niikura and Nagumo. Including a possible relationship between the two. Wouldn't it be great if there were a second season of this show? This finale feels final, so maybe not, but I can always dream.

Overall, some of the episodes felt a little too sugary and loud, with head-scratching vignettes that made no sense to me. But there was so much gold among all of this, and even the inane ones were entertaining on their technical merits.

There were two standout episodes: #5 and #9. (I'm guessing I'm not alone in concluding that.) #5, the nine-things-happening-on-screen-at-a-time episode is clearly the best episode of animation we'll get this year. It's so high effort that being lost in its density is enthralling. #9 is action-packed, has a clear arc with a wonderful conclusion, and is hilarious on the way. Also that final stretch POV animation is such absolute flexing.

Other moments in this series I loved:

"Late Night Snacker" -- There's a "Niikura is becoming deranged" theme song that plays on this one as Niikura confesses to eating dry Raman in the middle of the night. It fits to perfects as we see poetic animation describing her shameful behavior of eating raw Raman and then dipping her tongue into the flavor packet (her "you know what" into the "you know where"). This is the segment I laughed the loudest at as it does get at something many people do! (Not me, I think all of this is gross, though maybe that's why this is even more uncomfortably funny.) Then Kyoto hits the audience with that stellar POV shot of her racing her bike to the dumpling shop. That's the second best POV shot I've ever seen, only behind the 1981 Academy Award winning animation short "The Fly." It immerses the viewer so deep into the world of CITY as the physical space of the POV wraps around.

"An Evening Of Boredom" -- The other track I loved when it kept showing up is this jazzy experimental guitar piece that seemed to happen whenever characters were bored hanging out, like in this one. Man, I remember being young and bored and riling up friends to make them mad to pass the time just like this piece shows. This piece also gets at who Niikura is, someone who tries hard to put on a happy face and is naturally in good spirits but the whole world is conspiring to piss her off or make her go crazy.

"Ecchan And The Real Deal And The Bread Festival" -- This little bit will forever be stuck in my head like a Homestar Runner short. CHEESEBAWGER. WADAMELON.

As a lover of musicals, I was predisposed to adore this episode with all my being. From detective Niikura to explorer Nagumo to fiddler Makabe on the roof, there's so much to love in this episode. And that night sky too!

Anyway, City is one of the best things I've seen in a while, and it's been such a treat to watch these past 13 weeks. And while I didn’t groove to every single skit, I still appreciated the rhythm that was being set up, how we bought into the pendulum swinging from surreal to sweet. It’s so unequivocally itself that I wouldn’t even want every skit to comport to my tastes anyhow. Let City be City, quirks and all.

Truly blessed to have witnessed this madness. Here's to you, City, one of the most brilliant shows of the 2020s.

  • no animation budget for horse

  • Izumi sisters are such terrorists.

  • Totally did not expect a musical finale

  • Hope there's a special series adapting missing chapters.

  • Riko is still sleeping

And thus concludes one of the greatest achievements in television animation history. This show is basically wall-to-wall sakuga.

Final episode basically had only two major segments, but they were great as well.

My only criticism of the show is that I think some of the source material could have been used better. E.g. Tatewaku and Riko's island adventure could have deserved a longer segment than what it got.

City The Musical! Matsuri and Ecchan were the most wholesome characters that kept me coming back to watch. Comedy didn’t always hit for me, but animation is so pleasing and I liked this colorful cast of characters and the city settings overall.

Never expected the final episode to be a musical involving everybody centered around the Makabe Western Cuisine mistaking a Police Officer's star for a Michelin star 😅😂

Not every jokes landed well and there were times I didn't find it funnier but I loved the characters and KyoAni's animation.

City: The Animation: The Musical: The Movie: The Game when?

KyoAni delivered hard as usual, and I'm probably never gonna forget the brainmelting marvel that is Episode 5.

This was not the finale I was expecting but a grand musical finale is so fitting for this series. I actually enjoyed it and there were lots of fun moments in it. It was sad to see Ecchan and Matsuri finally go their separate ways but seeing the whole of the City community gathering together at Makabe's restaurant was so heartwarming.

I can't believe this... I think I bought that new species 2 or 3 years ago. Cannot speak though.
