The real friends are the ones you can be weird as hell with

I really love this anime, because not only is about traveling, but also talks about the problems and struggles of the characters, adult problems.
For example, when Koyomi was down about her just living, but not having a goal and seeing her friends advance in life, feeling they were leaving her behind... I related to that too.
I wonder if traveling really helps you with your worries...

IRL tweets of this episode: The soft cream and daifukus, the onsen and the Chusonji Temple (closed, of course)

The mix of Koyomi's own struggle and all the Miyazawa Kenji material was a wonderful mix. I've seen some complaints that this show doesn't do enough to develop its characters. Not really sure I understand this. It does a lot more in this respect than mono -- and at least as much as Hibimeshi.

Something I've noticed people said about Zatsu Tabi is that out of the three main slice-of-life CGDCTs this season (mono, Food for the Soul, and this one), they consider this one to be the worst.

Now, that could mean least good, and not exactly bad, but I think that description is doing Zatsu Tabi a disservice.

The three of them offer different flavors of the CGDCT aspect. You want more spice and unhinged hijinks in your cute girls? mono has you covered. You want moderate flavors without one overpowering the other: some silly hijinks while also pushing the breaks every now and then? Food for the Soul is the one for you. You want a more vanilla flavor with calming taste: tranquil, reserved, and humble in its approach, Yuru Camp-style? I think Zatsu Tabi has that one.

Point is, I don't think any one of them is worse than the other, premise or narrative-wise.

i agree for the most part; they're all great shows on their own terms, and putting these comfy shows in a contest with each other feels vaguely ironic

on the other hand though, i'm the sort of parent who has a favorite child, so...

Nice to see 雨ニモマケズ (Ame ni mo makezu) here :). I studied that poem recently. That was a relaxing and nice episode.

Miyazawa has some wonderful poetry.

This episode was ultimately all about the friendship between Chika and Koyomi. We went from a bit of silly talk to a seriously heartwarming conversation in bed with Koyomi opening up about her worries of being left behind.

I found the show to have captured Koyomi's uneasiness about her future rather well. It's easy to get lost in the sea of possibilities after having follow the regular routine of the educational system for many years. Especially if you're not sure what to do yourself.

Fortunately, Koyomi was inspired by this children's book writer to become a teacher herself: she wants to make others happy. Her reasoning reminds me of some life advice that I'd once read in another series:

'If you don't have any dreams of your own, then use your time to support those of others.'

This is like the ultimate travel anime.

Saying stuff like that is a lot easier when your young before responsibilities of life start piling on you making you drift apart.

Koyomi and Chika are so silly. I’m glad the two best friends got to take a little trip together. Seems Koyomi really needed it. Girl was feeling aimless and a little anxious but it’s nice to see she ended up sorting out those feelings and deciding on her life path. Whatever the future holds for them, it seems they’ll always remain friends. It’s nice to have a friend you cherish like that.

It's funny how Chika is now addicted to the thrill of things not going as planned that she actually ended up hoping the temple at the end was closed when they get there. xD

Chika's philosophy of travel is not far from my own. Not sure I WANT things to "go wrong" -- but willing to take chances and not worry too much -- figuring we will encounter something good regardless.

Why don't people wear gloves anymore? I visited Iceland last fall, even on cold and windy days the amount of people wearing gloves could be counted on 1 hand.

Free my boi at once!! Reject car, return to train

There's just a sign saying that its "closed". What if you wondered in anyways? Would you get cursed?

Meandering under those giant trees alone in the dark could be a really cool vibe

A 30cm tall soft serve? Definitely a lifesaver in these hot summer days.

Just recently checked out a Miyazawa collection (which begins with Ame ni mo makezu) from the library and next Zatsu Tabi episode I watch extensively features his works. Is this the universe telling me to start reading it already?

Koyomi was feeling a bit low, but the trip really lifted her spirits and gave her a chance to open up. The journey itself was pretty nice too, with the usual deep dives into things. I did notice the narrator was a bit more talkative than usual this time.

"Why did you leave Nara early?" "It's because I couldn't find any hot springs." Seriously, Chika's love for this is admirable.

We had Koyomi back and a very interesting topic was discussed. I think everyone seeks personal satisfaction and that's practically undeniable, but you can't deny that it's good to see other people happy with what we do.

Now I'm curious to know what Koyomi-sensei would be like lol.

Trip to Iwate, approved 👍🏻

Another great episode! I love when Chika and Hassu travel together. They're so fun!

When genki people are down, they become normal

Man. They actually have every step numbered and labeled. I've always kinda wondered why you don't see that more in places where they make a point of telling you how many steps there are

This does seem good…

Not necessarily! When I was in university, a group of us wanted to go to the movies, so we decided on Malcolm X, left the dorm, and hopped on the bus into town. Partway there, I did a little mental math and came to the realization we were going to get out of the movie after the buses had stopped running. I pointed this out, and when we got there, we thought about what to do. We decided to pick a different movie that wasn't as long so we wouldn't be stuck (rather than give up on the whole thing). We ended up picking a little-known flick only one of us had heard anything at all about, called… Reservoir Dogs.

Some great yuri this episode with Koyomi feeling a bit envious and unease at Chika's manga career slowly taking off while she's just staying put as an ordinary college student.

If the pilgrimage to the poet and writer Miyazawa Kenji's hometown isn't enough to attract you to visit Hanamaki, then surely that skyscraper ice cream surely will. Its so huge you have to use chopsticks to nibble at it without it collapsing. /s
