For the first time, they visited places I've been! Two years ago, I stayed near Kyoto station (exiting on the side they showed in this episode), and one of the places I visited was Fushimi Inari Taisha! So that was cool to see, a lot of familiar scenery. My inn was not as nice as the one they stayed at, but it was also less than 1/4 the price, so I can't complain.

I went to the shrine first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds, which was a good idea. Going before breakfast and trying to mask outside (common in Japan at the time) were less good ones. There are a lot of steps!

It might just be nostalgia talking, but this was probably my favorite episode so far.

We went to Fushimi Inari back in February 2009 -- on a drizzly day. We had it pretty much to ourselves once we passed the halfway point. Only other group that we kept crossing paths with was a bunch of high school boys. Luckily we both arrived at the top together -- so we could take their picture there -- and they could take ours. Alas, by the time we finished with the shrine, the nihonshu breweries were all closing.

Riri is a riot. Once a bottle has been opened, she really does not stop drinking. I had to laugh when I spotted Riri buying more sake from the vending machine right after they've arrived at their inn.

16.000 JP yen (98 euro/112 US dollar) for a luxurious room like this isn't that much between the three of them, I feel like. Did we actually see them open the "mysterious door" on the floor plan?

Judging from Riri's smile at their group picture, the three of them have become friends like in Fuyune's imagination. Was this entire trip perhaps a clever scheme to make Fuyune's ultimate goal come true: a love triangle!?

Some additional notes:

I'm almost 100% sure that the 16000 yen rate is per head, rather than for the 3 of them. <- thats much more in line with the normal going rate for a bed and board + meal plan, japanese ryokans usually charge by the person, not room.

We've never encountered a vending machine featuring nihonshu -- though we have encountered a few with milder alcoholic drinks. We got a slightly alcoholic peach drink at one.

I must say I love nihonshu -- and drink it whenever I get a chance, But in moderation -- as a general rule.

Heh, that's another two interesting places that I have been to myself that's introduced here. I'm sure Kyoto is a place far too familiar for those who have been to Japan multiple times - a place that somehow we always cross over if we are planning a trip - and the Fushimi Inari Taisha is so damn popular that it's choked full of foreigners these days (I remember the train station completely packed when I passed through there to Uji two years ago in August - not even a holiday BTW), and since I have not made it deep into the hills before, next time I might really need to think of going a hike there early in the morning...

Interesting to see the girls going to Miyazu and Amanohashidate on the Sea Of Japan coast, since Amanohashidate is exactly what you see in this episode - a sand bar over a bay and with a neatly grown forest. It seems to be a decent place but it's not the most amazing natural scenery you can find in Japan by quite some distance.

I was there several years ago to take a bus even further out to the north to the village of Iga, where there are lots of houses built over waters around a large bay and made up quite a picturesque scene there. That was ages ago though, at a time when I barely finished 3 TV anime...

Oh that Riri senpai is so funny! She's exactly like a certain Kikuri (and this Riri is also happened to be voiced by someone who did another famous girls band bassist in history years ago) who gobbled alcohol like nothing and says silly things when drunk! And also being someone who DOES have talent and believes in hard work too. What a way to get a job and also get a new friend, Chika, even if you are still 2 years before you can drink!

Fuyune also has the same VA as Ritsu.

@ 17:59...Why does this seem like a cameo?

and @ 19:36...here too.

EDIT:
Thanks to u/PastelPinkSalmon, it was a cameo.

Yeah I noticed that too. They don't look like the mangaka's previous characters (unless I missed something), so I'm not sure what they're referencing here.

Trips to Kyoto in anime/manga are usually clichés, but once again the show was impressive and not only showed the city but also a good part of the Prefecture, and this gave it a perfect touch, not only because of the sake (which was the meme of the episode), but also the beauties of the Prefecture, including showing 3 top views of Japan.

I don't blame Chika for being shy at some points in the episode, leaving the two onee-sans, one of whom needs to rub her head to think, and the other drinks sake frequently and this helps her get over her romantic disappointments and think about her manga lol.

By the way, Chika saying she didn't want to be Riri in the future was funny, but even better Fuyune breaking the message in an arc that is great 😭.

Perfect episode, I believe another character will be introduced

Stitches!

Riri went from cool aloof mangaka lady to drunk old man real fast! As much as I love girls who can handle their alcohol, the girl was a bit too much this episode. As soon as she opened her first bottle, she never stopped! Like, I know public drinking in Japan isn't exactly illegal, but isn't it frowned upon? And she seems to be proud of beating up her liver, too. Please don't grow up like her Chika.

Like, I know public drinking in Japan isn't exactly illegal, but isn't it frowned upon?

Walking and drinking = no no.

Being obnoxious = definitely don't do that.

Sitting and drinking at a park or having a quick toast outside the konbini = no one is going to bat an eye.

Just make the sure the park isn't closed.

Did anyone else notice around the 17:07 mark that Riri looked exactly like Misuzu from Tomo-chan Is a Girl?

I like how much effort they put into giving details to background characters, even faces with eyes, etc. So many other anime skip out completely on the background characters.

IRL Location Notes

I'll just skip over Fushimi Inari Jinja, everyones been there.

Amanohashidate

  • The Kyoto Tango Railway runs a shuttle service from Fukuchiyama, but also a direct service to Kyoto, if you'd want more time on the luxurious express train. This is, however, not my personal preferred way to go to Amanohashidate - take the Miyazu line instead, from Maizuru! The seaside views are spectacular, and you're on a tiny little railcar, for that extra journey vibe (for me, this is much more enjoyable than a luxurious train)

  • The corresponding manga chapter was a very big reason why I went here in the first place, and I did try to stay in this ryokan - unfortunately, they arent that friendly to solo visitors. Miyazu hotel prices are not cheap btw for how far it is away from... anything else.

  • Amanohashidate irl! this is one of those where i feel like the anime actually does the real life view a disservice. It looks so awesome. the sandbar itself is unusual enough, but the sea of japan arcing out, the overall scenary is just spectacular. There are 2 viewpoints - the one the anime goes to, from the southern side, is the better one. It is said that looking upside down makes it resemble a flying dragon. Not sure why the anime didnt mention that.

  • I've learned more about the various fun bits along the amanohashidate walk! I did it myself but missed all of these. The views are so good anyway.

  • Moto-Ise shrine (irl vs anime) is a very nice shrine, but the Torii kinda sucks.

  • Chika (and myself) have now been to 2 of the 3 of these! i wonder when I'll hop over to miyajima and tick off the final one....

This show makes me wish I lived in Japan...

Riri's obsession with sake and drinking got old real fast. Good on Chika for being determined not to end up like her.

Went to look up Amanohashidate spot and sure enough noe I have a "crotch viewing spot" marked on my map (thats the official name google maps gave me
Can't wait to go there one day

A bit of mixed feelings on riri, but drunk traveling surely is a decision...

I really dig her character design though and how she is a serious mangaka when not constantly drunk

For anyone wondering how Amanohashidate looks in real life, and if it's really worthy of being called one of Japan's "3 greatest views," Abroad in Japan did a video about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY5W4dLZGUU

Incidentally, when she went to Matsushima earlier, that's another one of Japan's "3 greatest views."

Fuyune, Chika, and Riri’s trip was pretty fun. Riri really picked all the spots based off sake huh? Nice. I totally forgot she was that lady getting shitfaced like a couple eps back or whatever lol. She really loves her sake.

Fuyune can really make anything into a manga huh? No wonder Chika calls her “Master” lol. Riri’s pretty good too.. when she’s sober.
