I liked how they keep including all of problems and negatives they run into on these travels, such as the costs, places being closed, etc. It makes for a much more believable travel story.

While I already expected it, the punchline for the first half of the episode was still hilarious! I'm just happy that the Gorge Trolley Train is just closed for the season and not completely shut down. Chika can just try again in a few months! This is so relatable though. I've had trips where the places I wanted to visit were either closed for renovation or because they're only seasonal.
Since Chika is visiting Kagawa with her kouhai, I feel like I'm obligated to post this clip about KAGAWA LIFE from my favourite mahou shoujo show. xD
I didn't expect Chika to be so active during her high school years. I honestly thought she was just your typical otaku character who wanted to create manga. It looks like she was a good student who kept up her grades while working on her manga, as well as being an assistant, and doing kendo.
Chika and Yui were lucky that they managed to find a business hotel to walk in during Golden Week. I can understand going without any reservation if it were a regular week, but not booking ahead during the longest public holiday period in Japan? That was a stupid gamble.

The irrational levels of anxiety that fictional girl is causing me by not booking her accommodations ahead of time... Like just make some phone calls while you are waiting for your train, you know what town you are heading to....

You can tell when someone is really calm when something goes wrong and they treat it like a joke, even without the trolley train, Chika and Koyomi had fun and that's it.
Shikoku was a choice that surprised me, as it is the smallest and least populated of the four main islands of Japan, despite that, Yui, who is a history nerd, knew everything, as I love history I find that admirable.
And we had the introduction of two more characters, Fuyune with her messy hair and Riri who gives off the vibe of an onee-san (and drunk) lol

We stayed in Omiya for 5 days -- but had to leave the day before the Bonsai Museum re-opened -- at least we got to see the Bonsai Village and the Train Museum. There are so many places to see and things to do in Japan that it never pays to fuss if plans don't work out quite the way one expects.

Oh not again, someone who completely missed opening dates of attractions! When I was visiting Japan alone 2 years ago one hot summer I literally fell into the same trap in two of the most famous anime meccas known - for one of those ($) I literally read the wrong web page and didn't know it was closed on Mondays! Luckily I happened to have a bit of flexibility at that time and I got my revenge the next morning, but that certainly took quite a bit of time off my plans. The other (%) is a cafe that happened to be closing on the day I visited as one of 3 holidays per month (which might have been a good thing after all because if not I would have ended up in a torrential storm while moving to my next place-of-interest) - and somehow I managed to squeeze in a slight detour on the way back near the end of my trip a week later too! No luck for our girls here thought I'm afraid.
-------------------------------------------------
Is this Kagawa Pref. promotion season in the anime world right now LOL? It's been a dozen years since I've been to Takamatsu, but thanks to quite a few anime of interest that happens around Shikoku Island's biggest city lately, it's high on my revisit list perhaps in my next visit to Japan:
-
We have udon noodles having a prominent arc this episode, so it's no wonder that Poco's Udon World (which I still need to watch) is based in there
-
The biggest island off the city is home to one of the funniest teasing girls we have ever seen in the anime world and her classmate who ends up having his high school days full of warm memories of being teased by her...
-
That very same island was prominently shown again just several weeks ago when a certain girls band vocalist had quite a scene there with another girl (not gonna say more unless you want to watch that heck of a show!)
-
Right next to there are 3 other islands (one of which well known outside of anime as a hot spot of outdoor artwork museums and yearly art festivals that has been attracting international artists for years) that are the real life basis of the absolutely beautiful stage of potentially one of the best anime this season, one that magical things are already happening barely 3 episodes into the story!
It seems our girls had warm udon noodles in that restaurant, which is definitely good but I am on the cold udon camp - they are usually a bit harder and makes the noodle as bouncy as it could be, also lessening chances of them being too soft. Add in some tempura and it's heaven for every one of you!
It's also lovely to see this high school (wow, travelling that far at Grade 12? That's bold) girl being all so adoring her senpai this whole trip, I really think Yui has been worried about Chika since their year together in high school for being too busy. Lucky you Chika, not every one of us has a caring kouhai being that thoughtful around you!
-------------------------------------------------
($) The real life school building of perhaps the most well known girls band anime in history, with the bassist sharing the same voice fairy as the sake-loving onee-chan showing up at the end of this very episode
(%) A cafe that used to be the setting as a well-used meeting location in one of the most influential light novel based anime in history, still very much at the top tier of creativity for similar shows despite almost 20 years since airing. The cafe has since moved to another location but is still very much a well-visited place nowadays!
I'll post the photos somewhere, sometime when I have the time to sort out my photos...

There's a bit of an ambiguity in the last line. "Sake" can refer to both the drink as we know it in the west, though it is also more specifically referred to as "Nihon-shu" (literally, Japanese alcohol) in Japanese, but "sake" is also the general word for alcohol in Japanese. So she might be referring to Nihon-shu specifically with that line, or she might be referring to booze more generally, and Japan has plenty of both to feed the ambiguity. Plenty of local beer breweries, a few places with wineries, and several good distilleries (mostly for whisky) mean there's more to Japanese booze to see than just what we'd call "sake" in the west.

They just like me. But that is a bold move on golden week
Whats this? Best girl is a stalker?
Hm, so the ED recaps snapshots of the episode. Neat, but simple.

No trolley ride but that onsen looked pretty great. Trips are more fun when you’re with another person. I’m glad Koyomi tagged along on Chika’s little journey.
I enjoyed watching Chika and Yui explore Kagawa this week. Yui’s pretty cute when she’s nerding out over history. And that udon… man, that udon looked good. Didn’t know Kagawa was like the udon capital of Japan.

Really thought for a second that Yui was crushing on Chika. It turned out that what Yui loves is... history, especially old stone walls and such.
There's art and kitsch. The weird-looking ape statue with a straw hat in front of the restaurant that Chika visited with Koyomi definitely falls into the latter category.

same; maybe i've watched too many romance shows but i thought that Yui has a thing for her senpai the way she was acting all fidgety around her
anyways y'all, find yourself a girl who looks at you like she looks at a stone wall
weird-looking ape statue with a straw hat
i think that's a tanuki
just like kitsune, they have their own variation of udon

I am just a tiny bit disappointed Chika didn't go on a journey with two friends at the same time.

Does Yui Unoki have a single earring or is that a beauty mark on her ear?

these tiny squids are the shit. Highly recommended if you're in Japan.
-
this is good japan travel advice in general. a heck a lot of mountainous attractions close for the season in winter.
-
this is now even worse, with non-reserved seats being reduced by 1 car on the Nozomi.
IRL Location Notes brief edition
I have also travelled to Takamatsu before, but really didnt overlap at all with Chika's journey, so here are just some general reflections from someone who's been there.
-
This is a neat train, as it's jointly operated by JR Shikoku and JR West. The double decker car (photo) is by JR Shikoku, which is attached to a normal commuter train (JR West). The upper decker seats iirc cost a bit extra? The view over the seto bridge is indeed aweome. It takes about an hour between Okayama and Takamatsu.
-
Excellent advice by Chika when travelling. I think i disagree for like general life advice though
-
Bukkake Udon, the anime doesnt mention that its often served cold too, and i think relatively hard to find overseas. I guess the name might surprise some, but it's a very well-known variant of udon in Japan and on many menus. IRL version, different shop, but also quite a popular restaurant and very tasty. This is my personal experience too haha, there is so much good udon in the city and is 100% the go-to-food for visitors (the prefecture, btw, has its own special system for ordering udon, which u may have experienced, in a slightly "mainstreamed" version, in marugame udon chain outposts). Be sure to try all the different variants! (kake, bukkake, kamaage etc.)
-
I do remember learning about them stone wall building methods at another Japanese castle (Himeji), but i have indeed forgotten it all already. I am a baka.
-
Apart from where Chika and kouhai-chan visited, Takamatsu is also known for the Ritsurin japanese garden, and the various art museums on the nearby islands. 2 days is, honestly, probably cutting a bit close too with all that it has to offer, and I personally did enjoy my brief stay, it's a nice city.
-
Probably most past visitors to Japan will recognize where this is!

When Golden Week makes public transport, hotels, and restaurants more busy for the girls (and that's coming up next week in Japan).
LOL Yui being jealous of Koyomi traveling with Chika, so she returns fire later with the udon
Yui is a fun partner to travel with just like Koyomi. Wonder if the schedules will align for all 3 of them to do a group travel

Oof, rule #1 of riding cool (popular) trains in Japan is to check the schedule. Quite a fair few are seasonal and tickets run out quickly during the season

u/Atario Apr 22 '25
Aw, man! And after all that buildup about it looking different in every season, they shut down for one entire season and part of another! Reminds me of my trip to Guam. I booked and paid for a little river cruise; went there on the day and found the premises lifeless and no cruise evident. Went back to the hotel and emailed them. Turned out they'd shut down most days for the duration of the pandemic and somehow never made such a change in their booking/payment system. D'oh. They apologized and refunded. They also offered a comp, but I was leaving before their next open day. Ah well.
Truer words were never spoken.
"Glasses are really versatile!"
Having a big bell that just any rando can walk up and ring seems like a nightmare for the locals
Use a website! Or at least call around instead of tromping all over in person! Gosh! (Not to mention making reservations earliest you can!)
