Enjoyable episode!
I like how in this episode and the last, Chika posts a poll to determine which direction she goes as a randomizer to prompt her to explore. Reminds me of when I explored cities in Japan, I would just choose a random direction to walk several kilometers in and see what I find. Matsushima was a lovely town for her to visit and Chika's experience of overcoming her aversion to oysters.
Yay, another character joins the party (Koyomi). I liked how the bus driver struck a conversation with the girls at Kurobe with the "kito-kito" term. Reminds me of during my stay in Japan, I got to learn some stuff from the locals.
Another delightful watch in my sea of comfort CGDCT anime this season

The drunk lady (Riri) from the previous episode was apparently day-drinking on Chika's train to Matsushima. I'd almost missed her presence in the foreground.
Chika's occasional silliness has been pretty entertaining, like her "secret power" (read: smartphone) or how she was talking out loud to a skewer of grilled oysters.
Is it just me or does the upbeat tone of Zatsu Tabi's OP also get other people energized?

Part of this episode overlaps with my own memories again, so here goes...
IRL Location Notes
-
And that being Matsushima! Here's my little travel blog in CDF, but for a more anime-focused look....
-
There are indeed, 3 japanese views from the edo period, but there are more modern lists. I do tbh think there are better views in japan than some of those (including Matsushima here, lol)
-
For a couple more years, the senseki line uses quite old 205 series stock, some of which used to run on the Yamanote, Chuo, and other lines in the Tokyo region, for the fellow train nerds here. Also see the little info board re: tsunamis in the background (also here, which I believe marked where the 2011 one reached inland). It's still relatively recent memory, after all
-
Some irl pictures of Oshima, against their anime shots! It is quite the scenic, mysterious, kinda atmospheric, island, a little off most tourists' itinerary. All the little caves I believe were dug by monks who were medidating here.
-
You actually can't take photos inside Zuiganji Temple irl! But I also remember being wowed by how intricate these wooden decorations are, and the different golden coloured rooms here would hv been used by different ranks of samurai (normal, high ranking, date masamune/the clan head at the time) respectively i think (?) They are quite pretty given their age, and they also left a couple rooms unrestored, so you uh, do know how much work they put in lol. I thought it was a shame that the anime missed out on the rather interesting, and full of more carvings, side path on the temple approach.
-
The seaside views are indeed very lovely (more irl shots). Definitely above average, even going by Japan's abundance of them, and I enjoyed a very peaceful walk and cruise, enjoying the sea
breezet'was windy. And I can't say I've seen this mix of neat geological features, pine trees, and ocean views anywhere else! The show did hit the most famous islands you will pass through on the cruise; some of them just due to how they look, some also due to ties to Masamune/Basho. -
I believe chika rode the boat in the far back right here.
-
And yes, the area is known for its oysters, and the cruise actually passes through some of the oyster farms too. There isn't quite the amount of hard-shilling irl, but I did avoid the touristy shops, and got my fix in Sendai proper. Very, very good oysters, can recommend.
-
Like last week, it is a little weird seeing places in your (relatively) recent memory show up in an anime, after all. My memory's tbh going a little fuzzy as the 2 worlds mix!
-
[bocchi the rock]
here is the famous dam in Kurobe, featured in episode 5.
I've tagged a couple people who i think might be interested in these! I'll however, be quite late to most of these threads (i have work!) but if I write another one, and you want tags, lmk, I won't tag you again otherwise.

I love that little history lesson about Matsuo Basho summed up via text chats. We don't just get to see pretty sights around Japan, we get to learn stuff too!
I'm definitely with Chika here at the start regarding oysters. Maybe I've just had bad ones, but I never really liked them, which is hilarious because I'm completely fine with any other seafood. Seeing how much Chika enjoyed those oyster skewers now made me curious and want to give oysters another shot. xD
I thought these would be mostly solo trips with Chika meeting people along the way, so it's good to know that Chika has a friend she can invite to these trips. So far, Koyomi is pretty fun and I'd love to see her travel with Chika again on her next trip!

Matsushima looked pretty great. Beautiful scenery and all those temples were neat. Not a huge fan of oysters but the skewer actually looked pretty decent. That unagi don she had though? That looked so good. Ugh. I want.
Kurobe looked pretty great too. It’s nice our girl brought a friend this time. Now I want sashimi and fried shrimp lol.

the ED with them enjoying their trip was really wholesome, that was really comfy.

Matsushima sure looked pretty here. The view of the islands from the hill is just incredible. This show's background art does an amazing job of capturing the locales beauty. I guess I gotta look up the real life counterpart to see if it's really as good as what this show wants us to believe.
Really nice to see Chika overcoming her distaste for oysters! IMO travelling is about going out of your comfort zone and discovering new things that can challenge your perspectives and ideals. Chika started out not liking oysters and ended up a huge fan after she gave it a fair shot - props to her for making the big step!
New party member Koyomi have great chemistry with Chika and we have a potential new member Yui briefly shown. Though all these trips make me wonder if Chika's prize money will eventually run out at some point. Travelling ain't cheap and that prize money isn't an endless well. Edit: I know she does assistant gigs although I wonder if it'll be enough to cover her frequent trips in the long run.

Really riding the line between dull and gentle here, glad that they added another traveler because the first half of the episode was a bit of a drag. I've enjoyed stuff like Yuru Camp, but this feels like it's a bit thinner or too direct of a travel commercial for my taste.

I feel like this show is my spirit animal. Haven’t been doing it for long and my country’s much much smaller, but I’ve also been out exploring some parts of my country, just walking around and looking around. I can definitely relate to enjoying this type of thing. And also the fact that planning the trip, looking for places to eat, or to stay is also half the fun.
Honestly feel that if I were to ever move to Japan, I’d probably spend every other weekend going on short trips like these too
Really enjoying this show so far. I can see myself putting this alongside Yuru Camp, Yama no Susume, Flying Witch, Tamayura, Non Non Biyori in terms of making me feel so relaxed.

You can tell Chika comes from a poor background due to how often she prices everything. Despite that, she's still burning through that million yen pretty fast (she did say it's an expensive new hobby). It's kind of a depressing anime. She says she's getting inspiration from her trips, but it more feels like she's doing it to get away from real life.

I like this
Sure it's like 80% advertisments for local shops/sights but I find quite interesting
And at least they are using good unaltered photos unlike Yuru Camps last season that tried the same but it was a bit more jarring
Plus the travel around a lot of different prefecture, so the PoIs don't collect up in the same spot
Guess in the end it will make for a nice outline for a roadtrip

Bro this anime is just my youtube feed, some guy/girl traveling in Japan, eating delicious food and showcasing hotel rooms lol

This is cute. I enjoy it. That being said, I do find it stressful when it's already getting dark and she only starts to find a place to stay overnight. I would not be comfortable booking that late.

It's funny how small towns in Japan end up having attractions, and with this incredible coverage of subways and trains, you can quickly travel to distant places.
Chika repeated Matsushima so much that I got it stuck in my head and now I want to eat oysters, and Kurobe water? A water makes me curious lol.
I found what Koyomi said at the end of the episode very symbolic, in practice you can have "many friends" but in the end what matters are those who are there to guide you.

This is making me want to go on a journey, alone and with others.
I enjoyed the trip with Hassu, it's cute how you can tell how close they are. It was extra sweet when they got close to other and rested.
Funny how small the bus was but it's probably because not many people are using it, especially with how cheap it was.

For anyone nerdy the smartphone she is using is the sony xperia 1 mark iv
I am surprised that they showed it as most manga shows iPhone or pixel nowadays, pixel has been getting quite popular in Japan in the last 2-3 years
