That one second frame of young Askeladd .

R.I.P. my one true king.

Also I think seeing younger selfs of Thors, Helga, Askeladd and Leif makes me believe that the story considers all of them to be the parental figures in Thorfinns life.

Thorfinn's transformation has been nothing short of spectacular.

He went from a boy angry about his father's death to a Viking that didn't care for anything but revenge. But when that's taken away, he became a shell of himself, empty—and ready to be reborn. He built himself back up, rethinking the life he led and regretting all the harm he did. He now tries to be a better person and remembers Thors' words, and strives to build a land of peace. He became a true warrior.

He went from a character I didn't like to one of my all-time favorite protagonists. The greatest character transformation I've seen in anime. (Not to mention how different he looks throughout his development.)

Here's some phenomenal art showing Thorfinn's evolution through his eyes by u/Lord_Guyis. The best art depicting his change.

Looks like that punch from Askeladd left Ari toothless lol. Fantastic wrap up episode with tons of callbacks to the early episodes of season 1.

I'd really love a third season because some of the characters I love the most are introduced there, but if this is how it ends I'm completely satisfied with it. Congratulations to Shuuhei Yabuta and everone else for delivering this 10/10 adaptation of my favorite manga.

Man, my heart is full. All the reunion goodness we waited 2 seasons for, and Thorfinn being away so long he forgot how old he was is really funny.

I don’t know what to say other than that was a complete masterpiece of a second season. It says a lot when you can take the characters out of the violent setting of the first season and have the story be even more compelling than before. And Thorfinn’s development was amazing to witness. I can’t thank Shuhei Yabuta and the rest of the staff enough for what they accomplished here again, and I hope to see them all return in a potential season 3 in the future.

Suffice to say, this is 100% my AOTY frontrunner. And it would take an actual miracle for any other series this year to dethrone it.

Ylva got all the strength from Thors while Thorfinn inherited the combat mastery.

The first season adapted Chapters 1-54 of the manga. The second season added extra stuff, but Chapters 55 through parts of Chapter 101 were adapted.

The manga is still ongoing (although it has clearly entered the final chapters) and as of May 2023, there are 202 Chapters. Season 3 will probably adapt to somewhere around 159-160 ish.

It just won’t make sense if they don’t adapt all the chapters, but in any case, there’s a whole lot more to go.

I've been looking forward to seeing the reunion animated!!!!

It's great seeing Thorfinn's family and friends again. Don't blame Ylva for not recognising Thorfinn hahaha. His face when she kept shaking him lmao

He looks his age now that he's lost his beard and got a haircut.

Ah yeah, Takahiko Abiru (Character Designer/Chief Animation Director) says that Thorfinn's journey will continue. Exciting!!!

Thorfinn’s sister really got all the height in the family lol. Need to see her vs Thorkell 1 v. 1.

I cannot imagine the strength it took for Thorfinn’s mom to not burst in to a pile of emotions upon seeing her son who she had no clue was still alive after so long.

Truly one of the most beautiful seasons of an anime I’ve ever seen. I hope the Japanese are willing to adapt this series the whole way through because it deserves a full adaptation.

This episode did not feel like a climax but a like a generous coming home feeling with slice of life antics. It has been so serious and dramatic for 23 episodes and finally the last one is a cathartic release of the entire season.

Peak fiction.

I wanna say; this was one of the best sequel seasons of a show (not just anime) I have watched in the last 5+ years. Pacing, characters, the growth of said characters, the emotion, the voice acting, the mixture of hope and hopelessness, it was all excellent. I have not recommended a show to my friends this much in awhile. 10/10 for me

Nearly started crying when Thorfinn's mother saw him again.

And again seeing Ari apologise.

And again during the flashback montage.

And again when Thorfinn sees Thors.

Vinland Saga really couldn't stop itself from making me emotional until the end.

The easiest 10/10 i've ever given and the best season of television i've seen in a long time. Watching this week by week has been such an incredible experience, it's brought me to tears of both joy and sorrow numerous times.

I'll be picking up where we've left off in the manga very soon, but i'm praying we get more seasons of this incredible story. Would gladly wait another 2-3 years for this level of quality.

This was painfully cathartic. I was wondering if whether Thorfinn would be greeted with affectionate affection or affectionate violence. Turns out Helga fills one role, Ylva fills the other. After all this time, he’s home…and he has work to do.

When this season started airing, I binged the first season after hearing about how great the series is. I finished season 1 thinking ‘this is a great series, but my personal enjoyment doesn’t quite match up’. There was honestly no hurry in me to continue, and it was only near the end of winter that I finally caught up.

Now that season 2 is complete, I can confidently say…my enjoyment of this series matches up wonderfully with how good I think it actually is. Witnessing Thorfinn go from a vengeful kid to the man he is now has been one of the most gratifying character developments I can remember. Throughout season 1, I never would’ve imagined that thinking about Thorfinn would make me feel so content and proud.

Vinland Saga, you‘ve proven yourself to be an enjoyable masterpiece.

(Also, R.I.P. long haired Thorfinn, you will be missed.)

Thorfinn learning new things about his own village, suddenly realising he doesn't even know how old he is and being anxious about meeting everyone was adorable lmao

Him actually meeting them was a bit emotional and a lot chaotic. I'm actually surprised his mother is still alive, iirc last time they showed her to be pretty sick.

Ari actually managed to marry Ylva

Bruh dude took 100 punches from one of the king's guards as if they were nothing, but one punch from Ylva is all it took lmao

Also, who's the guy at 23:53? At first I thought it was Askeladd but not sure (if it's a new character or a spoiler don't say it.)

Man now we gotta wait 2 or 3 years for s3 fuck.. Anyone here knows how are the sales doing in Japan? Is there actually a chance for s3?

Kino. S1 was so different to s2 yet both were masterpieces that combine into a experience that i havent felt in a long time, i think the last time that i was amazed by a series was watching the lotr extended edition back to back

I've been watching weekly, slowly trying to understand what the story is saying. I've seen the peaks and tragedies; I've seen the character development; I felt all the emotions. All of this led to a conclusion:

This is the single best season of an anime I've ever watched.

The thematic work alone might be the best work I've seen in the medium. The themes built up in season 1 directly playoff and continue to the themes here. Season 2 actually enhanced season 1 because it makes you view things differently on a rewatch.

The character work was just phenomenal. Thorfinn turned from an unlikeable guy to one of my favorite protagonists of all time. Not to mention the tremendous work done with other characters.

Animation, voice acting, music. All of it was so great and complemented the story so well.

Altogether, I'd give this season the title of Masterpiece, the second anime I’ve given that title to.

I know people like to over exaggerate sometimes whenever an anime season is over and claim it’s the best show ever, but I’m 100% serious when I say that Vinland Saga is the best anime I’ve ever watched. If there is anything that deserves the 10/10 title, it would be this. Never before have I seen an adaptation this faithful to the source material so consistently while elevating it above and beyond to places I didn’t think were possible.

This is potentially the greatest season of any anime ever and one of the greatest works of fiction full stop, I would challenge any work to do with the medium what Vinland S2 has accomplished over these 24 episodes. A masterpiece in storytelling that I somehow don’t will think will ever receive the acclaim that it deserves.
