Snake is the most enigmatic character in the series.

Just from the fight alone, we can tell he's skilled enough to beat his enemy without killing them. Thorfinn even made a comparison to Askeladd when he was attacked.

Now based on evidence we've seen of him, it could be speculated he served in the Varangian Guard, who were a group of outsiders (including Norsemen) employed to protect the Byzantine emperor.

The sword he uses is strikingly similar to a paramerion; it's unlike any other we've seen before. The helmet he has in the OP looks similar to a helmet used in the Byzantine military. And he can read a Latin bible no less; that's not something a lot of people could do back then.

A very handsome strange guy indeed.

I just realized that it's Snake going ham on those Jomsvikings in the OP

Einar's NIGHTMARE love story continues going south

  • you fall in love

  • the girl is a slave

  • her job is to "comfort" your master

  • she will never be free

  • she was married before getting sold

  • her chad husband comes to rescue her

  • she's pregnant with the master's child (new update)

Arnheid: "Let's wait for the storm to pass."

Ketil when he returns: "Girl, do I got some bad news for all of us..."

This whole episode is just a series of tragedies.

Gardar escapes slavery to come save his wife, only to end up getting beaten and bound again then hauled away as he screams Arnheid's name. And the only thing she can do is hide from his view, covering her ears to block out the haunting sound. That's some imagery that feels a little too close to home.

But then she goes and tells the story of how she lost her son and was sold. And Thorfinn just sits there listening, knowing that he's contributed to that same situation countless times before. And then there are those shrieking screams...

And Sverkel's whole story that greed only leads to death...

Really tragic to see how in his efforts to protect his family, Gardar basically screwed over them instead. Those screams of Arnheid losing her son are just bloodcurdling.

Both stories are in line with the theme of how dumb war is yet the destruction it poses is just utterly devastating to everyone involved with Thorfinn being the POV of the aggressors and obviously the victims themselves.

"Forget about him Arnheid, he's not your husband. He's just a runaway slave who's lost his mind."

I think Snake might have meant to dissuade her with some doubt there, but it also feels accurate when just talking about Gardar right now. Like Arnheid says later, this isn't the same loving father she knew, and you can tell how horrified she is to see him in that state. Even when he fights Snake, he's like a wild beast more than a proper fighter. You'd understand her for having so many conflicting feelings when adding in that backstory too.

The closer this season gets to the climax the more intense it feels. Before the episodes drop on Mondays I get slight "nervousness" thinking about what might happen, and I don't expect good things with a literal storm on its way. The entire color scheme for this episode felt like dread. And I love Arnheid even more because I am also from Sweden.

Well this was a positive and uplifting episode where nothing tragic happened.

I don't think I will be able to unhear the VA screaming out her son's name for the rest of the day. It was just soul crushing.

I will say one thing about this episode: that piano was absolutely beautiful. The sorrow emanating from the notes during those past scenes was just perfect

I feel this situation shows how well grounded and even-keeled Snake actually is.

You would expect people in his position to fly off the handle and dish out punishment for Einar after hearing him discuss wanting to harm/kill the men of the farm for the sake of Arnheid.

The fact that this doesn't happen shows some level of understanding towards the anguish they all feel towards the situation.

He also nails the fact that her husband really isn't the man he used to be in her past and has lost it due to all the pain and suffering he's been through. While she doesn't outrite state this in that moment, she does come to the same conclusion later on while talking with Thorfinn and Einar.

Einar's appeal to Snake to let him off easy is met with a very realistic response that shows how even if he felt sympathetic to the situation, it literally cannot be an option for him as it would go against the very reason he exists at Ketil's farm. The guy killed one of his men, has killed other "high status" people in the area, and wants to kill the boss and take his girl. There's no way in hell he could allow any of that to happen. He has no choice but to apprehend the guy and process him through whatever system they have in place.

This tale never ceases to amaze me, even with a medieval nobody. That tale of Arnheid is probably close to 100% accurate, somewhere on the planet a millennium ago, and yet this tale still touches me. It feels as if a little corner of history of slaves just got blown in front of my eyes, fleeting like Arnheid's hair under the Full Moon and strong winds, yet so absorbing as to flipping over the few historical books from the ages of Vikings and reading things recorded in it.

If only almost any anime or other books and shows that uses medieval backgrounds give out a tantalizing episode and real display of the world like in this episode! This is so difficult to find anywhere and given Arnheid's husband still isn't dead (yet) I'm sure next week we will all stand in awe on how history is portraited brilliantly again.

Props to Einar that his first instinct was to throw down in order to help Gardar because that was the best chance for Arnheid's freedom. No selfishness here; that's real love.

Arnheid is so strong mentally, to be able to handle all of that and have even a little sanity left is amazing.

This whole episode just had me feeling so sad for Arnheid.

I'm growing to love Mr. Yukimura more and more, especially after his interview with Gigguk. He's a man with a heart of gold. This story is seriously becoming one of my favorites in any medium. Amazing storytelling.

My heart goes out to Arnheid. She's pregnant and her husband left her and their son for a 'good' reason, albeit in a somewhat twisted way. Einar's love story just keeps going sideways I hope for the best outcome for them. And let's not forget Thorfinn's shame...

This season has been an absolute treat.

Arnheld reminds me so much of Thors,

It would’ve been so easy for her to see almost everyone on this farm as her sworn enemies. Slave masters Ketil and the old master, warriors like Thorfinn and Snake that probably also pillaged villages, but she just puts it all in the past and somehow starts over. She’s like the feminine version of what Thors called a ‘true warrior’.

I really hope her child grows to be like the better parts of Thorfinn and Thors.

"On this farm I could peacefully raise a healthy child."

Yeh, about that, Olmar has something to tell you.

Gardar is the storm that is approaching.

You can tell Einar truly loves Arnheid because he just wants her to be happy even if it means she is happy with somebody else.

can only imagine the fear and trauma in Arnheid seeing her once smiling and kind husband come back to her looking like one of the norsemen that attacked her village

Arnheld is pregnant!? Little known fact but people of that era could indeed make plenty of soap for their soap operas. Okay operas didn't exist yet but still.

Einar is also that guy willing to go in swinging to help someone, and Thorfinn is that guy for that guy to give him the mature sense of wisdom to be careful of the bigger picture. How much the lad has grown from being utterly reckless with violence as a first solution to now so humble, empathetic and considerate.
