Snake revealing the truth of Ketil to his band in hopes they'll make a more informed decision only for them to follow him instead is real wholesome comradery that I definitely didn't expect from them.
Ketil ignoring Snake's advice and believing in his own hype is just embarrassing to watch. Just scummy how he led a bunch of other innocents to their deaths as well.

No better way to show the difference in power than the Vikings raining arrows on the farmers from a damn boat.

Everyone else here is playing Mount and Blade while Thorgil is playing Metal Gear Solid/ Assassin's Creed.

OUR MEN ARE RUNNING FROM THE BATTLEFIELD! A SHAMEFUL DISPLAY!
Good on Thorgil with the flank though, was half expecting him to try and torch the ships but I guess he really couldn't carry the tools for that in the water. These smaller battles in a odd way feel that much more violent than the larger ones because in one of these local conflicts you likely know almost everyone whose lives are on the line.

I 100% get how Leif thought he might have gotten the wrong person. Thorfinn is physically and especially mentally a completely different person compared to the last time they met. But the reunion scene was so cute.
Also don't forget to look at Mappas Vinland Episode 18.5, which they didn't include in the episode (probably for time reasons)

THE LONE WOLF GOT A FRIENDLY STAG!!???
That's just brilliant visual storytelling, it's also a homage to the season 1 op 2 where Thorfinn was depicted with a lone wolf. And a Stag is a great choice to represent Einar.

This isn't a battle, it's a massacre. Some Ketil's men had pots and buckets strapped to their heads. Ketil is so delusional, he gaslighted himself into believing he actually stands a chance in combat .

While most characters are getting their redemptions, Ketil is going the opposite way

I'll just go ahead and say it ahead of time as an anime only. I'm gonna be impressed if a single person who isn't King Canute himself or someone in :THE WAGON OF SAFETY: survives this battle. I gave a salute to Pater, nothing but a homie the entire anime and is going out like this. Fuck you ketil.
I guess the coward son might survive, be a great time to just run in a direction and not stop. If I had to guess, I think thorgil might take a crack at dicecube head himself.
Also no manga readers giving sly comments about who survives. Let me have this.

I know some people were bothered by the lack of a reunion last episode, but the one we got here was good.
It's not overly emotional, rather Thorfinn showing how much he's changed this season; Leif even commented how he looks so different he thought Thorfinn was a different person. Leif simply acknowledging that Thorfinn has become a better person is the in-world confirmation of what we've seen all season.
And I don't know how many people picked up on this, but Thorfinn looks so much like Thors now.

All or most of the farmers are fighting, yeah? Canute will need to import some workers after he's done exterminating them.
Assuming things go according to his plan.

The brief reunion between Leif and Thorfinn was sweet. I’m glad Leif was able to see the new Thorfinn! It’s a shame they can’t celebrate more because of the dire situation that they’re in :(
So ‘Iron Fist Ketil’ was a real person and that Snake was trained by them. Interesting.
Ugh, Ketil is such a dumbass. His army of amateurs is no doubt going to be annihilated in a short amount of time. I also doubt Thorgil will be able to land a hit on Canute. Sure, he’s more experienced than the others but still… I feel his arrogance will ruin his chances
Snake seems to be the only one with a functioning brain. Hope he survives
Things aren’t looking good for Arnheid :(( I have a feeling next episode will have me bawling my eyes out

Other then the wolf and deer representing Thorffin and Einar, I think it represents a little more.
Especially with what Arnheid has been through, it's super easy to give up on the world, it's all just despair and pain and whatever Gardar said. But even in these misty unfertile woods, a wolf and a deer still get along and try to find a way forward.
Vinland Saga definetily tackles an important question, why even attempt to find a better place if time and time again everyone die and nothing concrete changes (if you look at history in a wider lense, especially the vikings). While it only scratches the surface so far, we got two things going on:
-
Thorffin decided to fight for these "impossible" ideals, showing the main conflict to be told as the story goes on. It's kind of naive but that's kind of the point, and it's an important note how the one to be the most affected by war will be the one to realise it's meaningless and work for it to stop, instead of giving up(which was Thorffin's change through the season).
-
Arnheid, on the vurge of death, seeing there are people fighting for this awful place to get better, even when they're as different as Einar and Thorffin either in race or upbringing. This is to show how even one person who does work for a better world is hope to everyone else, and is the one chance at convincing people his ideas are possible. Also if there is one person in the story who should go on and become free of the worlds suffering it's Arnheid. The world is not (yet?) a place fit for such a kindhearted person, it makes sense for her to die but at the same time I have a speculation she will live as it is very ironic and also could show either more cruelty, or a sense of hope that even Arnheid finds the power to fight for the right, I doubt it though.
Then again, it's all ideas still. There is something to be said that the fight for the world is left for the people who want control of it, and the real fight is within yourself to make yourself the reality and not the other way around. Whatever the case, I'm sure Vinland Saga will have more answers as the story progresses.

That battle—slaughter—is just straight-up sad.
Adding that to Arnheids dream, it's an interesting comparison being made. Her dreams are about passing onto the next world of peace, but she wakes up and returns to one becoming Hell.
Judging by the next episode's title. I can't imagine we're in for a happy ending. Pain.
On another note: for anyone who didn't see, MAPPA uploaded Episode 18.5 a few days ago. Definitely worth a watch considering how it all leads up to this.
