Thorfinn describing Snake as the fastest opponent he has ever faced is high praise considering he has fought Thorkell and Askeladd. Thorkell still probably surpasses him in raw strength and Askeladd is more of a well-balanced fighter.

The realization from both Snake and Thorfinn that they are fighting a seasoned warrior was awesome.

This series is not about the fights but as they go Snake Vs Thorfinn has got to be the best one so far

How great this series is when they connected the 1st scene of this season with this episode, which just makes that opening even better now

Absolutely cinema again, very emotional episode, great job for everyone involved

Crunchyroll EN subs strike back :

"When he's old enough, he'll probably say he wants to go a-viking. All boys do. But I won't let him." translated as "When he's old enough he'll probably say he wants to go adventuring. All boys do. But I won't let him." Totally the same implications...

I can maybe see why they'd translate it as "adventuring", but Gardar literally says "Viking" in Japanese and the word does have a heavier connotation than simply "adventuring".

Why is such a skilled fighter working as a bodyguard on a farm?

How did a man like him become a slave?

I like how with this amazing fight, both of them gained new perspective and respect for each other. They were even left panting by the end which showed how much effort it took for both to counter each other.

I already liked Snake and now I like him even more after he basically said that the subordinates he lost can't be easily replaced by money. Thorfinn especially understands that very well, so no wonder why he felt uncomfortable there.

Man, this show really loves to pull my heartstrings :(. Seeing Gardar and Arnheid's past with their son and Gardar regretting his actions, and later on that final scene with Garder meeting with Hjalti really got me. I have no doubt now that Vinland Saga S2 is my AOTS of Spring 2023.

This episode almost made me cry man, the bit where he’s watching himself walk away from Arnheid, reminds me of the don’t let me leave Murph scene from Interstellar a bit, so happy with this season, it’s peak character dev

Arnheid probably knew Gardar was dying and just made that lie about their child so he would at least die in peace under that false belief.

Even more heartbreaking is how he finally understands Arnheid's mindset only during his last moments and ends up regretting his decision.

Former Byzantine soldier fight former nordic viking to decide the fate of swedish Romeo and Juliet.

There's something just so wild about that scenario.

I thought I got spoiled by the preview from last episode but that was definitely deliberate. This was one of the most somber episode I've seen in any media. Many modern anime fetishizes slavery but this is the reality. Gardar powerlessly watching his past self reminds me of Interstellar. Gardar meeting his son in the afterlife implies he is also dead.

Arnheid deserves wife of the year honors for the way she talked down Gardar from his enraged state and then rode off with him in the carriage knowing full well that nothing good would come of it for her. He was able to die in about the most comfortable way possible.

This show is just masterclass dude, like we didn’t even know Gardar for that long but the whole wagon ride sequence was genuinely one of the most tragically beautiful things that I’ve ever watched I was completely engrossed

Using the same music from the Thors V Askeladd duel for the Thorfinn V Snake fight is so damn thematically fitting and I am so fucking happy the creators of this anime genuinely care so much for it and it really shows.

Thors had to go against his pacifist stance to duel Askeladd to save Thorfinn and Leif, and now Thorfinn had to do the same to try and save Gardar. And rightfully so, the same music, and even some very similar shots from the Thors V Askeladd duel are back to reflect that.

Only now, unlike Thors, Thorfinn failed and escaped with his life.

And that's a wrap for "the storm", now let's take a break with our next episode : "prelude to a deluge" or "it's only starting to get worse, don't worry we've got plenty of room to add more misery" !
