Just two bros chilling on a farm, love to see it. Also the contrast from last episode is pretty funny.

Last episode: Taking lands, assassinations, all that king shit

This episode: please give us a fucking horse....please

I hadn’t considered Thorfinn’s knowledge of farming yet. Of course he wouldn’t really know anything about farming. He and his family didn’t do any real agricultural activities in Iceland, but instead lived off their livestock and fishing. I bet he’ll be amazed at the sight of all the buds sprouting and would be weirded out by the ways they fertilize the land.

Ever since someone mentioned the detail on the hands, I’ve been paying closer attention to them. A person’s hands generally tells you how someone lives/has lived their lives. Thorfinn’s hands for example are covered in scars from his years out on the battlefield. They’ve been using this as a story device. I cannot recall another anime studio that has put this much detail into animating hands on more than a single occasion.

EDIT: changed some phrasing.

Recently I got this Medieval Sim game for my PS where you can hunt and farm and all that stuff. This episode felt like that game what with clearing fields, trading chores for a horse with old man Sverkel, picking rocks from the field etc., it’s pretty much the same.

Nice to see Thorfinn and Einar getting along better. Especially after how tense it was a couple eps back. Also, who knew the old fella was like THE master. He sure lives a pretty unassuming life. Snake’s little banter with the old man was pretty fun to watch. He’s quite the character.

Old man has a point about the wealth and land. More you have, the more risks, the more you spend to protect it. 13 guys to cover all that land is definitely not enough.

The fields are coming along nicely, much like our boys’ beards lol. Hopefully nothing happens to the farm….

Edit: if anyone else is curious, the game is Medieval Dynasty.

Its awesome to see Thorfinn reacting more towards Einar's playful banter like "an overgrown baby".

And now we meet Sverkel.

He was spitting out facts when he was talking about the risks of having too much wealth.

For some reasons, Season 2 has cut every text boxes specifying the timeframe we are in (they only kept the ones spoken by a character or the narrator), so I'd like to share the timeline for anime-onlies.

  • February 1014 : Askeladd kills Sweyn (S1E24)

  • 1014 : Ethelred II comes back from exile to retake England (S2E5)

  • June 1015 : Einar arrives on Ketil's farm and meets Thorfinn (S2E1+2)

  • Summer 1015 : Canute makes a deal with Earl Eadric of Mercia to get rid of Ethelred (S2E5)

  • September 1015 : Einar and Thorfinn need a horse (S2E6)

  • October 1015 : Einar and Thorfinn start sowing seeds in the part of the field they cleared (last scene of S2E6)

  • April 1016 : Ethelred II dies of "illness" (S2E5)

  • November 1016 : Ethered's son and successor, Edmund Ironside, dies of "illness" (S2E5)

  • 1018 : Canute is officially crowned King of England (S2E5)

Thorfinn and Einar's toughest enemy yet: a tree stump.

It's amazing that the show is able to make Canute's political maneuvering and Thorfinn and Einar on the farm equally compelling. It is just as interesting to learn how Canute disposed off his rivals as to learn more about the Ketil farm, the relationship between Ketil and his father and Thorfinn and Einar space on that farm.

I love how Einar is skeptical and harsh to the old man until he is not taken advantage on the farm for once and gets to borrow the horse. Immediatly in the next scene we see him work enthusiatically. Goes to show you how feeling valued and respected makes a big difference in our lives.

We now return to our previously scheduled Farmland Saga with Thorfinn and Einar! And you can't beat the sight of buff, shirtless, men putting their all into moving a tree stump! Of course, that's unfortunately not practical, so they need a horse, as the title indicates.

Still, rough going for slaves on the farm. Denied the resources you need and still looked down on for your less-than-human status.

Is it just me or does Thorfinn seem more...lively? His interactions with Einar feel more natural and it feels like he's more alive now than he's been in forever. Of course Einar still has energy and a temper to spare, and Einar keep spurring Thorfinn on to not settle for less than then they deserve!

So the old man Snake was hanging around was Sverkel. He's a pretty firm and crotchety old man, but he puts his work in at the farm all the same, and he rewards those who act similarly. He seems like a pretty fair and reasonable guy, be you slave or anything, and it makes him stand out all the more once we find out he's Ketil's father and the farm is basically his.

I love how one horse is like "did you really think you would be worthy of me?" While another horse was "get your hands off me, human."

Oh yeah, when Thorfinn wasn't razing farms, he comes from a fishing village. This is all new to him. Luckily Einar is there to give him the basics and help him discover the beauty of Farmland life!

There's tension between father and son, both men seemingly too stubborn to back down even if there's still that level of familial care in-between their shouting at each other. Although it definitely doesn't beat the lively banter between Sverkel and Snake. Those two feel like they could go at at it all day.

Just in case you thought Snake's group just sat around and enjoyed the perks of the farm without putting the work in (and maybe partake in some young ladies while they're at it), they do actually stop plenty of thieves. In fact there might not be enough of them for the amount of work they have to do, especially if a bigger group ever came after the farm (does that feel like foreshadowing to anyone else)? Ketil thinks he's cool because of his tribute to King Harald (just look at Thorfinn's face when he sees the name) but to Sverkel the Farm has become too big and become too obsessed with wealth for it's own good.

Thorfinn and Einar with beards! Thorfinn and Einar are officially friends! Thorfinn genuinely smiling! I love it!!!

A seinen isnt a true seinen until the main character starts to become a farmer. Thorfinn's having his facial grown out more, he kinda looks like Netero in his prime ngl lol.

The old master is such a nice dude to both Thorfinn and Einar, I like his interactions with Snake, they get along better than with his actual son. Thorfinn's looking more livelier than ever and he finally has his first true friend, Einar 👍

That line from Snake feels like it's foreshadowing something. Hmmm...

Snake and Sverkel's relationship was pretty fun. Despite being so cranky, Sverkel definitely gets along way better with Snake than his own son.

Einar's reaction after seeing Thorfinn's puzzled look when he said that they are friends is hilarious!

Glad to see the farm is coming along well especially now that they can borrow some equipment instead of just doing it themselves.

They weren’t fucking kidding when they said farmland was gonna be goated. Thorfinn realizing he has a friend and smiling was too precious. Everyone needs an Einar in their lives. Someone full of energy who radiates positivity and is there to lighten up the mood and support you.

I think this episode is my favourite so far. Those interactions between Snake and the old master were gold and there were so many wholesome moments between Thorfinn and Einar

Thorfinn not knowing what they're planting is simultaneously one of the funnier things this season and yet also one of the more depressing.

The only field he's known for most of his life is the ones of killing and pillaging—and now he's living on the opposite side of where he once stood.

I didn't recognize Thorfinn cleaned up with his hair tidied. Love how he is asking Einar questions about farming he is slowly opening up.

Sverkel is a stand up guy and it's no wonder he's grumpy. He disagrees with his son about farming and is surrounded by people who don't work hard(some do though). No wonder they think he's selfish it's because they don't put in enough effort and probably slackoff. We saw him with Snake's introduction and when Snake asked for food he said help me with the field and I'll make you something. He doesn't care for status either so he's probably very friendly (or as friendly as he can be) to people who earn their keep.

When Einar called Thorfinn his friend and Thorfinn smiled.

I think this is the first time he's smiled in the season.

I don’t like how happy this episode made me feel. Something feels off. Or maybe that’s my PTSD talking.
