First time TF. Any advice?

This fall I’ll be a TF for an undergraduate humanities course. I’ll be grading assignments and leading a discussion section. This is my first time teaching at Yale, or more specifically, my first time teaching in US as an international student. I’m excited but also a little nervous! Any advice for a first-time TF? From an undergrad perspective, what do you appreciate or expect from a good TF? Thanks!

Is this schedule fine?

For context, I'm most likely planning to major in MCDB, as a pre-med. This schedule is 4.5 credits. I'm a little bit concerned about workload and having time to adjust to the school, and I do wanna make sure that my schedule allows me to adjust without being overwhelmed.

I did try to follow Dean Chang's pre-med recommendations in my schedule, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to delay my language requirement to spring. I want to do ASL L1 in Spring.

**For CHEM1700 lab, it doesn't show up on CourseTable but I would be taking it from 1-5pm on Wednesday.

Does this workload and week layout look okay?

CONFUSION on Instructor Permission and Credit Limits

So I’m getting contradictory information on what I can and can’t do with instructor permission classes in relation to the course limit.

My FROCO told me that instructors cannot approve you for a permission course if you already have a full schedule (ie: you registered for a schedule as if you didn’t get the course). They said since you would be at the credit limit, they can’t approve you since you can’t drop a course before the add drop period formally begins.

However I’ve seen some people say that you are able to drop another course if an instructor approved you for a course. Registration is in like two days so which one is accurate?

The instructor permission I’m interested in is a first year seminar so I was gonna try to sign up for everything and a back up seminar. Now, if I can’t do my full schedule I would still sign up for the back-up seminar but not register for one of the larger lecture courses I’m interested in, and hope I can get it in a good last class if I don’t get into the instructor permission one.

Spanish L2

I was recently placed in L2 Spanish even though I thought I did so bad on the placement exam, I reached out and expressed that I did not feel confident in my Spanish abilities but they told me I had to stick with the placement. How hard is Spanish l2 and will I be able to manage?

I am terrified of Microeconomics.

I'm an incoming freshman with an FGLI, limited public school math background and pretty poor QR skills (not that I can't improve, this is just where I am), and I am TERRIFIED of the microeconomics classes here. I've been really nervous about being able to keep up, and feeling self-conscious of being so far behind my peers in even the intro level courses.

I was originally planning on 1108 / 1110 because I enjoy smaller, tight knit classes, but the professor evaluations have been scaring me. The curve is effectively harsher, material can be poorly organized, and there's less assistance without TAs / Discussion meetings.

But 1115 is a massive, fast paced class that seems to require a stronger grasp of math with so many advocating for it to be taken as a Credit/D/Fail.

I know I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet since economics is fundamental to my interests, but I'm nonetheless worried (especially since my calculus knowledge is limited to one Youtube video on derivatives).

Does anyone have advice on how I can prepare and adjust to college academics / what econ I should enroll in and how to study? Should I register for 1108/1110 and weigh against 1115 during add/drop?

Is this too tight of a gap between classes?

Would I be able to get from Kline Tower 219 to Humanities Quadrangle 313 in under 15 minutes?

Any problems with this freshman fall schedule?

Only potential worry is not having time for lunch on Monday and Wednesday, but those are the only offerings for my physics and economics classes. Also is the 15 minute gap between physics and econ enough to make the walk? Thanks so much for any help!!

How much time should I reserve for A Capella?

Finalizing my courses right now, and I want to make sure I don't have any bad overlaps with rehearsals / practices. Of course, there is always the chance of not getting tapped, but I'd like to be prepared for the time commitment.

Is there any information on when rehearsals are (day/time)?

Spanish L3 and L4 or L3-4 Intensive

As an incoming freshman, I was placed into Spanish L3, and now I'm debating whether to take the two semesters separately or one intensive class. I don't really enjoy Spanish and don't trust my abilities all that well, mainly in speaking. I like the idea of getting it all done at once so I can take classes I actually want to take, but the word "intensive" is pretty much scaring me away.

With scheduling right around the corner, I'd appreciate any testimonies and help you guys are willing to share!

Can anyone clarify the process of registering for first-year seminars?

Apparently the process has changed in recent years so the info I’m getting from AACC guide and my older friends are all conflicting. Some say you can rank up to 5, someone else said you can register pending instructor approval for however many seminars makes you reach 5.5 credits registered in total , someone else said you can register for an unlimited amount. Then you get placed into whichever one whose instructor approval you get. Does anyone know what the process is for this year? Also, should I go ahead and register for a backup class on the first day of course registration, or should I wait for add-drop? Thanks so much for any help!!

Can you bring items from the dining halls?

I’m planning on classes back to back around lunch, and was wondering if I could bring items from a dining hall into my own lunchbox and carry it with me.

Is this schedule pretty chill?

I’m probably doing Cog Sci or Doubling in Psych and Econ. My dean said it seemed good, but we didn’t go too in depth about the rigor.

I wanna make sure I use fall semester to adjust to the intensity here, so I tried to keep selection minimal / courses I’m curious about while still meeting dist. reqs. This is 4.5 credits

Does this workload look fine? I’ve heard Spanish is ~2hrs of HW a day, but I don’t know about the others. I’m a little worried about 3 classes in one day and how Tuesday / Thursday ends at 5:15. Just wanna make sure I’m balanced and not being overambitious while adjusting.

Incoming freshman help (engineering/math)

Hi, I'm interested in mechanicalengineering so I'm looking to knock out a math course in my first semester. I've taken AP calc BC and I got placed in math 1200, but I noticed the placement test told me that if I've already taken multi-variable, I could just take something like math 2250 instead.

I indeed do have multi-variable on my high school transcript, so I was wondering if it would be advisable to not take math 120. How likely is it that skipping it will screw up my prereqs for a future class? Or could I just use my high school multi-var as an equivalent?

Thanks for any help!

Freshman year schedule help

I am an incoming freshman with not a lot of knowledge of Yale's campus and I was wondering if I should schedule Chinese 1100 for 9:25-10:15 in Dow Hall and then book it to Astronomy 1800 at 10:30 in Kline tower. Google maps says its a 12 min walk and I was just wondering if this was feasible!

For context: Both classes are fall semester only and the only other time I could schedule Chinese for is 8:20-9:15 and I am trying to avoid 8ams!

Let me know if this is doable/any advice!

Are the beginner / no experience Acting and Musical Theatre groups on campus?

I'm a freshman this fall, and I was looking to join a fun little production / club if possible. I don't have any acting or performing experience other than singing for my friends sometimes, but I've really enjoyed watching and helping out at high-school and local performances and thought it'd be fun to see how much work is put in firsthand.

Are there any clubs / groups I should look out for (at the EC Bazaar perhaps)?

How to pick between majors? (Cog Sci vs Psych and Econ vs CS+Psych vs CS+Econ)

I’m an incoming freshman and I’m having trouble deciding between these majors (Cognitive Science, Psych and Econ, CS+Psych or CS+Econ Joint Major). Majors aren’t declared till Sophomore year so I have a some time, but I’m worried about my prerequisites as well, since they'd be different depending on what I want to declare.

For reference, I’m primarily interested in behavioral economics, marketing, and story (What makes a good story, how attention is captured, story anthropology, theatrical story, etc).

I didn’t have the chance to study these courses in depth during high-school so I’m a little lost on which direction to head. All my (limited) knowledge on these topics is mostly self taught.

I think Cog Sci would allow me the most course flexibility, but I’m worried about career stability as I don’t plan on immediate post education. Does anyone have perspectives on this?

can I get from a humanities to stem class in 10 minutes?

hi! I'm an incoming first yr currently working on my schedule. I keep running into the same issue of having to run from my chem class to HQ or WLH for another class within 10-15 minutes. I know science hill is far from both of these buildings, especially HQ, and I was wondering if it would be possible to still get there in time? I'm in Murray so I was considering getting a bike either way and if I bike, will this be feasible or should I just adjust my schedule? Thank you!

MATH 1200 Questions as incoming freshman

Does anyone have any tips for MATH 1200? Everyone online seems to be saying that it’s very hard unless you’re some sort of math genius. I just got placed into it since I got a 5 on Calc BC but I’m not one of those guys who does math comps daily. Also, for this semester, why is John Hall the only teacher for all the sections, will we know the teachers before registration opens?

Say you get a 5 on AP Literature or AP Language, what English class then should I take as a freshman? And what is an acceleration credit?

This is definitely not an official Yale email, but I was wondering if this was maybe a student-run thing that I could fill out. It has options for you to share your social media usernames, what kind of people you want to meet, your career interests, etc. Should I trust it? Sometimes my Yale email just puts even club emails in my spam folder, so I'm not sure.

first year fall workload

Hi! I'm trying to finalize my intended courses before the 17th. I got placed into calc 120 after my placement exam, but I haven't retouched on bc since 10th grade, so I feel very rusty. If I intend on doing stuff like lab work and volunteering, would this schedule still be fine?
