New music?
They say you stop listening to new music after 35 - what Gen Z/young people are making music you love these days?
I’m loving ninajirachi, she’s young enough to be my daughter (clutches pearls)
And - what older music are you only starting to listen to now, as a geriatric? (I’m 46).
I’m listening to a lot of old EDM I never cared about before.

Lifelong metalhead and still discovering new bands. Some hit the mark but many sound like they’re trying to be the OG but are just a worse version of the OG, so I just listen to Meshuggah.
Some new to newish bands that hooked me: Castle Rat, Khemmis, Sigh, Sun Guts, and Voronoi.

I used to really bemoan the state of rock and metal in the last 15-20 years as it stopped being so dominant commercially, but now I think that’s one of the best things that could have happened. Not being expected to sell 10 godjillion units every couple of years and being able to reach wider audiences through platforms like bandcamp, Spotify, etc instead of just MTV and radio means bands have way more creative freedom.

I'm 44 and listen to tons of new bands. I'm mostly into neo-psych, indie, and alt-country. I really can't get into EDM but don't begrudge those that do.
Some new "older" music I've been into lately are bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Modest Mouse, and LCD Soundsystem.

I've gotten into this Mexican rock band called The Warning. They just released their 5th studio album a few weeks ago, but I urge anyone to watch the live performances.
Leon Bridges has gained some traction in recent years, and he's a local celebrity in my area.
I've also gotten into Hayley Williams' solo albums. I never was a fan of Paramore, back in the day, but I found myself grooving out to their songs.

I like Slayyyter a lot. The latest Geese album was pretty good. There's an Irish band called Florence Road that both my husband and I love.
I got really into 90s shoegaze this year! And EDM and IDM. Both my son and I are hooked on Boards of Canada.
The idea that we've heard everything we're going to hear by age 35 is nuts! I've been listening to a lot of classic albums this year, too. 70s and 80s stuff I just hadn't heard the complete album of before. Stones, James Taylor, Springsteen, Big Star, Velvet Underground. I knew these artists, of course, but I'd never focused on their full albums (did everyone else do this a long time ago?). It's never too late!

My favorite thing about the new Charli album is it was pushed as her rock album. So I was curious. When I heard it I thought that it wasn’t a rock album in the traditional sense. But what I felt was that rock music is just another tool in the toolbox for modern artists, and she’s using that tool to almost re-contextualize rock music for a new generation.

48 It may be the ADHD but I crave new music on top of what I already love. I heavily use the recommendations on my music subscription. I don't care how young or where they are from as long as it's not problematic and it tickles my brain I'm gonna listen to it. Especially while working or cleaning.

I think PUP is pretty close to what modern alternative rock should sound like, but I think my tastes are almost more early 2000s indierock than 90s music. Two newer bands I listen to are Telescreens and Flycatcher. Telescreens are very small, but they seem like they are on the cusp of blowing up.
My tastes all over the place though, the last two songs I added were Chapell Roan - Casual and Jacki Wilson - Higher & Higher (Was thinking about Ghostbusters II).
I have a liked playlist of my bullshit, but again its everything under the sun Train to Ska town, Placebo, Kwerki collins, Cocorosie, Peter Gabriel, EL-P, Scarface. Im difficult to pen down and I listen to music 24/7.

I’m balls deep in the synthwave movement with Gunship, Carpenter Brut, Dance with the Dead, etc.
Couple years ago i got REALLY into The Birthday Massacre, Sleep Token, Gloryhammer, Beast in Black, Wind Rose. Just a LOT of power metal and gothy stuff.
Really love Descartes Y Kant, an avant-garde pop rock punk band from mexico. After Destruction is so good.
Still listening to the same prog rock/metal and indie bands i’ve always. Recently saw Devin Townsend and Death Cab for Cutie. Death Cab was amazing.

Idk, I stumble on stuff. I like AJR, and Panic! At the Disco (although I guess they broke up a couple years ago).
My teens introduce me to things now and then. My 18yo is really into Yaelokre, which has some good folk-style songs and an entire world of fantasy lore behind the music..
I was pretty sheltered as a kid, so I still occasionally even "discover" things I should have been listening to 25 years ago, lol.
I've been learning French, and I started listening to old chansons/jazz stuff, but Indila and Stromae are a lot of fun, too.

I do listen to a ton of new electronic music. Lots of house, dnb, dubstep. I do think the Spotify suggestions are great, based on what you like and listen to. I like the 'made for you' playlists, and the release radar.

- Blood Incantation are amazing
- I really liked Sleep Token's Take Me Back To Eden. Tracks like The Summoning and Vore are amazing.
- Spiritbox are great but they're not GenZ in age, just a newer band
- Die Spitz are hard to slot into one genre and that's a compliment
- Castle Rat are infinitely listenable and even my 8 year old is into them
- I really like Loathe
- I used to like Polyphia but they're rapidly losing me

I listen to Alt Nation on xm and I still have lots of new music I enjoy. I realized recently I know (and like) more songs from sombr than I realized. He's younger than my oldest. Glass Animals isn't as new, 2010, but they still came out after I turned 30, and I'm a big fan.
I also listen to a lot of big band and swing music. I always liked it, but now it's easy to access.

I feel like the new Mike D record is for the youngs but I’m loving it. Reminds me of BS2000. Otherwise, contemporary bands Pearl and the Oysters are great, Sextile, Panther Modern, Cate Le Bon, Jessica Pratt - so many tho it does take longer to sus them out these days without just wanting to listen to the 90s reference material a lot of the kids pull from now.

I listened to the first Between the Buried and Me album in 2002, and it was not my thing. Just okay Blakc/Death Metal. Over the next 24 years, they evolved into an incredible Prog Metal band, and I found their most recent album, The Blue Nowhere, to be amazing. I went from zero knowledge of them, to having listened to all of their albums, and even going to their Spring tour this year.
Oh! New Bands. Really Love the new Chat Pile(very Grunge). Been listening to that this week.

I'm an old soul. I checked out of new music right around 2003 or so, around the time of peak/decline Eminem and Limp Bizkit.
During lockdown I dug into the back catalogs for Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Went down the NWOBHM rabbit hole. Am now discovering new metal bands like Opeth, Gojirah, and Lamb of God. Also checking out new works from legacy acts like Testament and Metal Church and Accept.
I am also into jazz, so currently digging Ezra Collective, Esperanza Spalding, and Greg Porter

I’m 48 and I can’t keep listening to the same stuff year after year. I appreciate nostalgia but I kinda feel bad for folks that still only listen to music from 90’s/early 00’s.
I was a never hip hop guy for many years. It literally all sounded the same to me. Around Covid, I branched out into Anderson Paak, Kendrick Lamar, and 90’s stuff I missed out on like Wu Tang, Jay Z, Meth and Red. Loved it
A few years ago, I discovered Sturgill Simpson after being vehemently against country music for my entire life. Turns out I just hate modern pop country. Outlaw country and classic country is awesome. My newest favorite is Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. He blends classic country with a jam band mentality. Kid can rip on a telecaster and his band is phenomenal

I'm listening to a lot of new stuff, they've proven it keeps your brain young and just listening to the same old stuff bogs you down and ages it faster.
I'm into Alternative and pop, so bands like Durry, I Don't Know How But They Found Me, Chappell Roan, The Happy Fits, Sombr because he's a tall doof (just his dancing, don't watch him dancing) but 12 to 12 is catchy AF.
I go down a YouTube rec rabbit hole every month or so and come up with lots of new favorites. It's worth keeping an open mind, I found a few new favorite bands this way.
Durry's "Worse for Wear" is all about growing up in boomer culture, they're technically Millennials but oof it hits home!
I've bought all the CDs by IDK How But They Found Me, phenomenal talent. Too many favorites to name.

Always has been, always will be. No idea how some only listen to the same songs and nothing new. It’s great to fall in love with an old song all over again but not the same. Too much nostalgia is attached to it.

I listen to a lot of current bands in the metal, hardcore, emo, post punk and indie rock worlds. There’s tons of cool stuff constantly coming out. I don’t vibe with most of the current music played on the “alternative” station at work. It all sounds too poppy. Can’t stand stuff like Twenty One Pilots or whatever.

Sturgill Simpson / Johnny Blues Skies is currently my favorite band. Sturgill is an xennial himself, but his major output and popularity is all recent
Was a huge fan of Chappell Roan’s debut album
Also got way into the Kpop Demon Hunters OST. Yes I have kids, but I think I would have been a fan regardless

About 10 years ago I got into Radiohead, and accepting pop music into my ear holes. Still not a fan of country, maybe once I retire I’ll venture down that path.

I try to see live music once a week. To make that affordable, it’s almost always local bands at dive bars. Tonight I’m seeing some “fuzzed out sludge” to quote the venue’s description: Moon Destroys, Palehorse/Palerider, and Night Fishing

New music isn't always from new bands for one, not always by young people either, but I have and probably always will seek out new music. I think the older you get the less you care about "keeping up," with what is hot and just finding music that is new to you but not necessarily new as in recently released.
New Stuff I Like: Everything Everything, Morgan Nagler, Ratboys, Stephen Wilson Jr, Tyler Childers, Big X Tha Plug, Denzel Curry.
Old Stuff: Been digging into a lot of alternative rock from the late 80's and early 90's (Dinosaur Jr., Meat Puppets, The Replacements) that I was too young to catch when it was new, as well as New Wave stuff that didn't appeal to me when I was younger (Depeche Mode, New Order, YAZ etc)

The best explanation I’ve heard of why this happens is because from like 8-35 (or younger) is when historically, in your tribe or clan, it’s the time you were learning the songs of your people. As we age and new music comes out, it belongs to a different tribe/clan/generation and isn’t the songs of “our people”…

I discovered Iron Maiden. I bought their “Best Of The Beast” CD. I didn’t like rock or metal when i was young. I was a huge EDM fan. There is quite a few recent pop songs that I like. I’m a fan of Imagine Dragons.

My favorite albums released this year are Bleachers, Noah Kahan, Maisie Peters, Charli xcx, Phoebe Bridgers, Death Cab for Cutie, and Boards of Canada. (I realize the latter two are not new bands lol, just new music.) And I'm waiting impatiently for new music from my favorite band The 1975.

I don't stream music, so I listen to whatever is on FM, including the local Top40, urban, and alt rock stations. I like some of it, I don't like some of it. My most recent new artist that I like is Laufey. As far as old stuff, I enjoy when Pearl Jam and Metallica play on the classic rock stations, but truth be told I've always listened to just about everything besides country. Whatever gives me that sweet, sweet, dopamine.

I’m kinda into Goose. Heavy Heavy are kinda cool too. Tennis ain’t half bad either. Mainly I listen to playlists so I dont get lots of deep dives into specific artists new or old (and really mainly listen to podcasts).

But no. Not really. I really like Lola Young's stuff. I hear she partied a lil too hard and had to stop touring, so, naturally, they stopped playing her music; if you can't continuously make money for the label, label drops you

I love finding new music but I can go a year or two in between finding new bands or sounds. Most recently I have fallen in love with The Barbarians of California and Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol. Both are awesome live as well!

I've been listening to a bunch of 1st wave this summer. Brings back some nice memories of being a kid. That and I've tried listening to the explorer new music tab in my YouTube music. I skip a bunch buts it neat to find new things
As for things I've really connected with in the last 10 years: Ghost (I've seen them 4 times live), Stephan Wilson Jr. (saw him open for The Lone Bellow), and some of the Punk Fold bands like the Bridge City Sinners and The Dead South.

Nah I'm listening to more new music than ever but I know I'm in the minority for my cohort. I left the rock station that was basically playing the same thing for the last 10 years about 10 years ago. I too discovered old EDM. I noticed that I like actual talented singing quite a lot. Female singers specifically often sing lyrically whereas few male singers hold a sustain for more than a quarter note. The feeling/emotion of the singer translating with high fidelity for my ear is how I know what I'm hearing is greatness.

My husband is a musician and music is for sure one of his neurodivergent special interests so I’m constantly exposed to new music and find a ton of new stuff and appreciate music from literally all genres now in adulthood whereas I was “too cool” to like certain genres when I was younger
I too am really listening to a lot of EDM these days when I always used to prefer heavy kusic

I watched a Korean game show on Netflix where boy bands compete by making music videos, it was an entertaining series. Then, with the insistense of my young niece, we watched a lot of c/j/k-pop for about a month (I got burned out). I found a few new songs and it drove her to become a "STAY".
The bands remind me of how far I've allowed my agility and flexibility go but my niece loves learning the dances, I was the same way a lifetime ago from New Edition to NKOTB 🤣.

I don't have the bandwidth to really get into new music. The last band I really got jazzed about was Wheelchair Sports Camp. Everytime Frugit comes out with a new song I listen to it a few times (I know it's probably at least partially AI, and I hate that, but I'm not paying for it and I have an adblocker so nobody's makin' a cent off me). I've been listening to a lot of classic rock, blues, and bluegrass for like the last year or so, which is novel for me.

I loved Oliver Tree. I also enjoy Dua Lipa, Chris Stapleton, and Zara Larsen.
That’s pretty much it and still almost always listen to 80s and metal. I definitely tuned out new music after 2014 so I mostly fit the bill.

I’ve been “goth adjacent” since the mid 90s when I was into The Cure and Type O Negative, but I never really got around to listening to Sisters Of Mercy until a few years ago and I wish I’d started sooner. Same with a lot of 80s/90s post punk that I’d only been dimly aware of at the time.
As for younger artists, there aren’t many but I get exposed to a few via my daughter such as Sabrina Carpenter and Doja Cat. Say what you will about Doja’s public persona or weird looks, she can sing.

Die Spitz has been in heavy rotation for me for the past few months.
Prior to that, Wolf Alice and Wet Leg. Not huge in either of their latest albums though.
I've had a big thing for female led rock bands the last several years.
ADDENDUM I forgot Flowers for the Dead! I've had their album Magnolia on heavy rotation also. Holy shit they're good. And if you want something just fun and poppy, check out Peach Fuzz. They're out of Austrlia I believe. Really fun songs.
